I DO NOT understand the Lights Out and Chaos Shuffle changes.
Lights Out and Chaos Shuffle, one of the most unique and fun game modes DBD cooked up.
Lights Out going back to DBD's old roots and actually try to make it a scarier game. No Perks, no BS, no Terror Radius, nothing but a dark fog covering the entire map.
Chaos Shuffle, gives killers and survivors random perks and addons that it feels like gambling for a specific loading out or perk you want, it was chaotic and fun.
But now in the 10.0.3 patch, the two modes are coming back after 2v8 DOMINATED the lifecycle these past couple of years and…
Ummm..
BHVR?
What on Earth are these changes?
First things first. LIGHTS OUT.
Survivors holding the Lantern will now grant them Windows of Opportunity for absolutely free just by holding it.
BHVR.. What is this? Lights Out is meant to be this sort of return to form like gamemode where it's pitch dark and you cannot see anything unless you got the candle from the Castlevania iteration. WHY ARE WE GIVING SURVIVORS WINDOWS FOR COMPLETELY FREE?!
This just defeats the entire purpose of the mode for being this more dark and scarier vibe of the game because a Survivor can basically hold the lantern all the entire game and basically to map out the entire trial by doing sweet F All while the killer gets absolutely NOTHING to compensate for this.
CHAOS SHUFFLE on the other hand is the most alarming. Every single perk and add-on are basically available to be used randomly in Chaos Shuffle, more specifically add-ons that completely change the killer's power or make their abilities completely useless, like Sadako Tapes, Scratch Mirror Myers, etc.
Basically meaning "you playing a Michael Myers in a Chaos Shuffle Match, got Scratch Mirror but no Haste Perks? Sorry.. Unlucky. Good luck walking 500 miles to a survivor on gen permanently slowed down."
Literally, Chaos Shuffle and Lights Out in the previous incarnations since 2024-2025 is FINE, no changes required. Quality of Life fixes and sorting Dredge's Nightfall problem in Lights Out? I'd be sold on it, but giving Survivors completely FREE information on walls, pallets and vaults by grabbing a light source and basically allow add-ons that COMPLETELY disable the killer's power depending on the killer is baffling at best and completely ruining these game modes at worst.
The only gamemode that isn't affected by changes like this is 2v8, the mode that is starting to lose it's steam and having the most barebones changes.
This is tinfoil hat theory and this may sound absolutely stupid, but the main reason why these outlandish changes is because DBD Twitter [more specifically Twitter survivor mains] literally cannot handle it when their toys are taken away from them, especially in Light's Out case. They can't use perks to nyoom their way out of the map, they can't use perks to give killers the middle finger like DS or slugging builds. They want the game played by themselves or get an edge in winning the game so BHVR gave them free Windows for the sake sabotaging what makes Lights Out great.
As for the Chaos Shuffle changes.. I don't even know WHAT their reason for that is. Did BHVR forget WHY this was implemented? Just so Killers don't get screwed over by addons that screw them over in the match. Why are we enabling that? Because at this rate, I'd rather play Kaneki or any killer that is barely affected by these changes instead of getting screwed over by a game of chance.
Now before you go and throw your "Killer Main" accusations at me, I play a lot of survivor, when really I want to play more killer, but with these constant patches of perks that rarely seen the light of day getting nerfs, [Thank god Sprint Burst and Vigil nerfs are one step fowards on the right track] refusing to killswitch Streetwise due to a gamebreaking bug a long time ago until the community forced them to put their foot down, the absolute boding of Skull Merchant and over-nerfing thanks to the 3 Gen meta with her, the absolute destruction of perks that forces survivors to rethink their strategy like Franklin's Demise, The Black Banquet being the most hilariously bad and underwhelming event from BOTH sides giving survivors legal cheats and throwing poison for killers and the entire Walking Dead Chapter period.
This is starting to become absolutely ridiculous as time goes on and I'm not sure if I'm going to be there for the 11th anniversary or not. But the little bit of nerfs like 2 second Sprint Burst and 40% Vigil is giving me a TINY bit of hope, some semblance of hope we might be getting on the right track.
But for BHVR, PLEASE keep making some good updates to make the killer role feel decent again, especially for M1 and other lower tiers while slowly overtime tone down the other survivor perks that dominated the game over the years.
[PS make Hindered the only status effect not affected by Vigil and my life is yours]

You see, survivors found it boring that killers got good stuff in Chaos Shuffle when they had about a 0.5% chance of getting poopy No Mither, so now your killers have about a 5% chance (some are higher, like Nurse it's more like 20%) to get a trash meme addon that cripples you. Survivors find that more fun.
As for the Light's Out changes, well, if you look at perk usage rates, over 34% of all Survivors use Windows, because looking for windows and pallets with your eyes and pre-planning your next move when the killer comes is boring. Lights Out is unfair without yellow.

Someone who not only came here to complain, but whose complaints are completely valid AND explained perfectly without sounding like the typical "my role needs buffed and theirs needs nerfed" argument?! Will you marry me?
Jokes aside, I've been looking into these game modes coming back soon and checking out the changes they announced, and you explained my thoughts on this perfectly.
Chaos Shuffle was never an exciting game mode to me. I only saw it as a way to avoid all the meta builds that made the game too easy for most or nearly impossible for lower-tier Killers (and everyone I play is considered B-tier or lower). It was also a way to discover Perks I never use and realize that I should include some of them more often, but more often than not, I was given a build that was useless or even negatively affected me. The new randomized add-ons make me not even want to play some Killers for the same reasons mentioned. Some add-ons will just make them completely incompetent unless you get lucky with Perks that balance out the negative effects.
Not much to say about 2v8. It was fun getting my friends, who never play Killer, to try it out with me. However, once they added and changed things to make Survivors stronger than before, my friends rarely down anybody and no longer want to sit in a queue for at least 20 minutes only to watch almost every Survivor escape consistently. So now I usually have to solo queue while BHVR seems to have gotten bored, as they hardly balance anything or add new Killers to the 2v8 roster.
Lastly, Lights Out was amazing. It actually made DBD the scary game of hide-and-seek it should have always been. The thematic second release for Castlevania was interesting as well. The Candelabra maybe needed to be tweaked a bit, but I'd take it in that form any day over the new Lanterns. Without Scratch Marks, a single Window or Pallet can leave a Killer dumbfounded in their tracks. The panicked sprinting through the dark, desperately trying to find a way to escape your pursuer, was Lights Out's entire charm and added to its fear factor. Now I don't even want to touch it as either Killer or Survivor.
One thing I think they should do is go back to thematic game mode releases like they did with Castlevania's Lights Out and Resident Evil's 2v8. The last 2v8 that was "themed" around Attack on Titan was a joke. It changed absolutely nothing in-game and was only advertised to sell cosmetics.

I loved the candelabras they were so cozy and atmospheric. I think encouraging survivors to be a moth to the flame is a good thing for killers. If you glow, you go!

did you ever play Lights out as survivor? I guess not, cause this was literally the most hideous thing to do as survivor from all the modes beside My "stomping" little Oni.

Personally I could care less whether every single addon is in the pool: on one hand like 1 addon per killer could be disabled to disable crippling meme powers, on the other hand it is supposed to be Chaos Shuffle where you get anywhere from a super meta build to a pile of trash.
But the reason Lights Out is being changed this way is obvious. I don't know if you ever played from the survivor side, but while you can argue the horror aspect was cool, it wasn't fun to instantly die with no warning from a ranged killer out of your view or a killer that can make you exposed without you even knowing and instantly down you because you have no idea where to run. The game was just straight up not fun for survivors, which is one of the reasons 2v8 is always so easy to get into as a survivor and takes so long to get into as killer: its fun for killers, but being double tapped by 2 killers at a time is not (of course, I vastly would prefer to play survivor in 2v8 than Lights Out)

getting double teamed is how you lose games, though. it feels bad but it's also a losing strategy. as a survivor i love being double teamed

Lights Out is meant to be this sort of return to form like gamemode where it's pitch dark and you cannot see anything unless you got the candle from the Castlevania iteration. And it hasn't been working out. You don't need a tinfoil conspiracy - it didn't get enough players.
Every single perk and add-on are basically available to be used randomly in Chaos Shuffle, more specifically add-ons that completely change the killer's power or make their abilities completely useless, like Sadako Tapes, Scratch Mirror Myers, etc.People have been asking for just this. People want differing levels of chaos and the 'absolute chaos' side has won out (though not random killers/survivor skins, yet) for this go around.
The only gamemode that isn't affected by changes like this is 2v8, the mode that is starting to lose it's steam and having the most barebones changes.Player counts don't back up that its running out of steam.
Pretty much it boils down to something much more simple - BHVR is responding to players. Not enough people are playing Lights Out, I'm surprised they are still trying to salvage it, but they are, so its not surprising it needs a big change. Chaos Shuffle gets lots of different feedback. And 2v8 isn't getting many changes because people are playing it a lot and its coming back in September for a longer stay.

I really wish we got these modes as private lobby stuff due to this.
They're not going to be able to balance it in a way everyone likes, so why not set up these modes for people to mess around in outside the normal queues? 2v8 makes sense to have as a mode outside of private, but Lights Out, Chaos Shuffle and heck even My Little Oni would be great party games. Even allow editing settings like this to everyone's tastes.2 -
I have no interest in chaos shuffle so I'll only speak on lights out and is it less immersive? Absolutely but I get the game mode as to be playable and survivors before were too scared to do anything and were running to dead zones constantly like I get why this mode doesn't come around very often.
At least now they'll stand half a chance in chase and killers still have the stealth advantage and survivors having huge lanterns should make them even easier to find at least. Killers should still have the advantage with no 2nd chance perks and no exhaustion so it should be okay.

Why are people so on the fence about Chaos Shuffle now allowing everything.
That is the whole point of Chaos Shuffle. It SHOULD be the whole point of Chaos Shuffle. The fact that they omitted perks and add-ons in previous iterations actually totally defeated the point.
You load into a trial knowing full well that what you are getting is completely random. And it can work in your favour, or not at all. It is the CHAOS in the Chaos Shuffle. You don't know what you are getting, and you will have to make due with the hand you're dealt.
Besides, there is nothing at stake. Event queues don't influence your MMR if you win or lose. So embrace the chaos. True chaos, for the first time.3 -
The only thing about chaos shuffle is I would make an addendum that if you get stuck with no mother you also can't have perks that aren't even usable with that perk equipped (self care/inner strength/etc).
Random killer add-ons seems like a nerf on paper, but how big of one? That's yet to be seen.
I'll play exactly enough Lights Out that I need to for whatever challenges that put out with it. That mode is donkey eggplant.
Come up with a capture the flag mode already.
