DBD Halloween Event Thoughts through the Years
Hello!
Want to preface by saying I started playing DBD this anniversary, so this is my first halloween event.
What does everyone think of the Halloween event so far? What is it like compared to past ones? For example IK the past ones had a different realm you got taken to or something?
I like the haunts (?) and smashing pumpkins.

The first real Halloween event was in 2018, called the Hallowed Blight. And it was incredible. It was the event that introduced the Visceral Cankers, aka Pustula Plants that can still be found in Tome 5 on page 1.
This is a compilation of the in-game videos that accompanied it:
And here is gameplay footage from that event:
I want to call out 4:39 of the gameplay video, look how cool the event hook was and how it withered when she was hooked, easily the best hook DbD has ever had. Back then only so many event hooks spawned and the killer had to hook on them to get their event bonuses, an event mechanic that BHVR did away with years ago. I enjoyed the challenge of having to use those hooks, but clearly it wasn't for everyone.
You can just tell that back then BHVR put so much effort into making that event great and this was when I started playing DbD. It is still my favorite event of all time. It also was the introduction of the Blight to the game which later evolved into the killer the Blight being added 2 years later.

Heh… I have to respectfully disagree. As I see, the Hallowed Blight was the worst event in the history of DbD.
The IDEA of the event seemed cool, but the execution and gameplay was a complete mess. There was a very limited number of cankers each trial and they didn't respawn. They also didn't give any in-game benefit to survivors, didn't help them completing the objective at all… but they were needed for the CURRENCY to obtain skins, so survivors kept just fighting among each other for it. The results: survivors not doing gens to search for cankers, letting others wait on hook while they did the cankers on their face (freeing them would mean less serum for you), and the worst part: If they didn't get enough serum to fill a vial, they would give up on hook or just DC on the spot so they could "go next", and there were no bots back then, a disconected survivor was a dead survivor.
And because the grind for the skins was pretty long, these lased through the whole event. Playing survivor was UNNWINNABLE most of the time because your team was against you and gave up on the spot, but you NEEDED to escape to get your serum for the skins. And as killer you just automatically won almost every match because survivors sabotaged each other and gave up all the time. To make things worse, because the experience was so one-sided, killer queues were insanely long too. You had to wait a ridiculous amount of time just to get one bad, very easy match.
And I wasn't the only one thinking this, just look at forum posts from that time (I´m cutting some of them to avoid making this comment gigantic):
As you can see…
…let's just say there's a reason why the cankers later came back only as an easy tome challenge that only one survivor could interact with per game. The event was such a mess that the whole concept was changed for future versions. The lore of the Alchemist (who would later become The Blight) and its cinematics were cool, the skins were cool, but the gameplay was absolutely terrible.

The darker lighting looks so sick I wish they could bring back some spookier ambiance for Halloween even though I will say I like this orange purple vibe as well.
I've only played two games on killer so far, but I think bringing the hooks back for extra charges + event BP wouldn't hurt.
I like how this event is themed after a killer (Blight). I feel like this year's Halloween is just Halloween and doesn't have any DBD flair like a Blight-themed halloween :(. I still like the theming, but it would be cool if another killer/lore could get incorporated…

I can see that being frustrating. They probably should have made the pustula the objective somehow or at the very least have made them respawnable like the pumpkins in the current event so people were not toxic and fighting over them.
I will say last night in one game I played survivor I finished one gen, got into chase, and after I got downed and hooked I stayed on that one hook all match until I died. Rip. I am sure people during the event objective and not rescuing would be so annoying…
I think a lot of DBD stuff kind of makes event objectives 'scarce' and you have to do so much of it that it is time consuming if you do not go about it efficiently (e.g. you're just trying to have fun). Event objectives should not be 'go out of your way' but rather something that progresses naturally through a fun gameplay loop… I think it is good you can get quest progress from just sitting on gens now or smashing pumpkins which is (1) fast and (2) renewable. Now if they wanted to keep a cool pustula theme but with this new interaction iteration I think that could work too and the pustula is kind of more interesting in my mind, but maybe it's because I never played a Halloween with them in it.
no idea why the original did not tag you.
I hope this event can be better for the survivor experience! Those threads sound like it was a miserable time.

I can forgive a lot of crap about the Hallowed Blight because it was the first real Halloween event and second real event ever in DbD. They were still figuring things out. Another thing was that the completion of a Canker awarded 4,000 bloodpoints to all survivors, so I could forgive survivors prioritizing cankers over rescuing me. It was really hard to come by bloodpoints back then, remember it was a time before anniversary cakes existed.
The Visceral Cankers and Cankerous Hooks are still my favorite assets BHVR ever made in DbD, by a large margin. The animation, look and sounds they made (sounds they have sadly removed) were excellent. I don't think they've made another hook that was half as good as a Cantankerous Hook, maybe the Grill Hook but that's even older. But I am sure I am forgetting some hooks of note, the art team always kills it.
The current Haunted by Daylight event is just a copy that's more notable for what it deleted from the previous iteration than what it added, although the added blurry orange filter is notably awful. It's sad that this year's Halloween event is so lackluster becuase they've been doing them for 8 years at this point, they should have it figured out. Instead they just phone it in as usual.

I personally think this iteration of their Halloween event has been my absolute favorite! Yes, I even like the orange filter and realize a lot of people are going to disagree on that point, but feel it gives a spooky feel, without being overly dark like lights out.
I can't speak for any of the events prior to Haunted by Daylight as I started playing late 2023, but can say I have very much disliked the events prior to this one. The void was especially disadvantageous for the survivor role, but honestly neither role benefited enough with spending the time to go into the void and thus lose all progress/pressure in the game. Changing things this time around to being able to gather what you needed while remaining in the trial realm has been a big win and I see both roles interacting with the event items much more equally. Only thing I might understand being a complaint from others is the prevalence of the haunts that cause a pretty big hinder effect, but it hasn't been a huge issue for me personally.
Glad as well they went with a focus on a more stereotypical Halloween theme for the cosmetics. Freaking Singularity with a lil alien mask?? Cute, love that. Billy's lil puppy fit I've been screaming to people from the rooftops is one of his first fits I've been excited about in a while. 90% of the time they like giving my boy the most diabolical fits. I even prefer the shirts this time around for the survs.
Point being for me at least, love it! I'd been taking a couple weeks break from DBD to grind other games and this event re-ignited my passion to play.

Well, I wouldn't say it was really themed after the Blight, more like the other way around: the Blight was themed after the event, which is one of the things that make him such an amazing killer, down to his lore and how he was introduced. The theme of the event was more about these pustula plants manifesting in the realms of the entity, and "the Blight" was simply thename of such phenomen", which came with these cool skins… (which I honestly thought were the best skins for each killer at the time, specially those for Doctor and Wraith). But then, as the event started, we could see in-game some lore and cinematics where a guy in a black coat was studying the realms of the entity, the pustula plants and their serum, reason why survivors also got serum victorian scholar/scientist-themed skins. One of these cinematics confirmed the guy was injecting himself with the serum and getting stronger, to the point he actually beats the Trapper and captures him at some point, which revealed those syringes in the skins meant that these scientist was capturing each killer and experimenting on them just like that. We didn't have tomes back then, so it was insanely cool to get that kind of lore.
Fun(ny) fact: the Legion was the first killer released after that event. When people saw the teaser with a hooded person, a lot of people thought it was going to be the scientist from the event. We were disappointed when we noticed it was just a normal guy in a normal modern hoodie, lol.
Then in the following Halloween event, "the Withered Blight", we get more from this guy's lore and learn he was called "The Alchemist", which we expected to be his killer name when he finally arrived. In his last cinematic, he injects himself and starts transforming into… something.
Then in the third Halloween Event, "The Eternal Blight", he comes to the game and we learn that he was no more "The Alchemist", but had turned into an embodyment of "the Blight" itself. This was by far the most build up any killer ever got before being introduced to the game. And at this point Tomes were already a thing, so that's where the final piece of his lore was revealed this time. As much as I had hated the gameplay from the first iteration, I love the lore that spawned from it!

Oh, but I can assure you all the other Halloween events after that one were much better. Like, I don't remember many gameplay details of the second one, "The Withered Blight" from 2019… because it wasn't nearly as infuriating to be marked so hard in my memory, lmao. But I remember it had a cool as hell lore just like the first one, but without the awful gameplay, just minor gameplay additions instead. "The Eternal Blight" in 2020 barely had any gameplay changes, just special gens and hooks, but at least the tome had some brand new challenges that made it look like more of an event, including the cankers, and that was the event that introduced the special add-ons for killers and med-kits that we have today! The Blight Serum was released with the Blight, and that's why his power is the only one that interacts diferently with it (it gives him 1 more charge of his power).
Then, in 2021, they moved away from the "Blight" theme because the story was already complete (and also because they always change the theme of an event after 3 or 4 years to avoid making the events repetitive. The anniversary event had multiple themes now already) and introduced "Midnight Grove", which was… pretty much just a "Trick or Treat" theme. A normal Halloween Event about celebrating Halloween. Cool, fun, but a bit of a downgrade from how unique to DbD the blight theme was. But I believe it was the first that added pumpkins! And they had random effects back then, which I find way more fun then always a haste effect that barely compensates for the time wasting kicking it.
Haunted by Daylight started in 2022 and I found its first iteration one of the most Halloween events ever. It added small rifts (just like the ones that turn into portals in the current event) you could spend points on to get haste, so knowing that, you could combine it with fast killers and haste builds to catch survivors by surprise. The 2023 version made so rifts turned into portals to the Void… but I HATED that event, worst one after 2018. Seriously, there was no reason to go to the void as killer because there were no gens to protect there, and killer powers didn't work there! If you played Hag or Huntress, you became a slow killer with no power. But I would also find survivors less often because a lot of people just kept using the portals to hide in the void all the time, which lead to some really boring matches. As survivor, that meant your teammates either ignored the void or ignored the gens, which was awful.
The 2024 Haunted by Daylight had more incentive for you to go into the void as killer, as you could pick up better rewards there, but you couldn't stay for long due to having to protect gens. Still, despite flaws I think that was the most fun among the Halloween events I played, it had improved A LOT from the previous version.
I didn't play the 2025 one, unfortunately. It was the only Halloween event I lost in the history of the game. But I've been liking the current event so far. I just must admit I still don't like the portals. The way they are opaque and don't allow you to see through windows and doorways some times, the way survivors often enter them before you even get close and makes it take longer to start a chase… it's annoying, but less annoying than it was in 2022.

Oh, and about the aesthetic, I must say… I like the current orange filter in some maps, but hate in others. It looks really sick in the Blackwater Swamp maps, a bit meh in the Red Forest and Autohaven Wreckers… but in indoor maps like Lery's and Hawkins it's really, really ugly. The best part about this filter is the red-purple sky, when you can't see it it feels like the map just turned orange over nothing, and it does not feel pleasant to look at a bunch of orange-ish walls.

I heard the tomes are going away eventually, so for new events it would be fun if the events were themed around killer(s) and their lore expansion. The lore drop through the event sounds cool I wish this Halloween or last anniversary did something more for the lore drop, but maybe the Black Banquet is setting up or did set up a killer? I know we got things in the archives for it, but I didn't know precisely what to make of it.

I've exclusively been playing the event and while I do enjoy it I feel like it doesn't break up the gameplay loop as much as I want from an event. I am hoping with the recode in the future it opens up the opportunity for the developers to get way more adventurous if the objectives survivors and killers should accomplish during the time-limited event modes.
I think Halloween that expands on another killer's lore and is themed after them would be cool in the future still. Maybe like Unknown.
I wish I got to see the void realm :(

Don't expect much from BHVR there, they've proven for years they're not to be adventurous, especially in the last 5 years. If they making modding actually powerful then it will be the modders who do the adventurous things and then BHVR will incorporate the good stuff into the game. But I am cautious about modding being powerful, after all how will that sell DLC?

Yeah I'm not expecting much but I like to theorize and hope 😓. At the end of the day, I do like the 1v4 asym anyhow, so even if the events are the same just iterating on previous ideas to improve them instead of scrapping them entirely would be much appreciated (such as iterating the void realm, special gens, hooks, pustula flowers). As a design team, for them to genuinely sit down, brainstorm, and go through that whole user design process for us…
A lot of games have strong allowed modding, but the fanbase still puts a lot of money into the games cosmetics. Two that come to mind are all the Fortnite and Roblox modes. This is not modding skins in but gamemodes if you're talking about that developer sandbox thing I'm pretty sure DBD is working on? Anyway, I just hope these lackluster events from what I've heard are because of everything being put into this grand overhaul, but yeah after what the Halloween event ended up being I am not hoping for any crazy events in the near future such as the winter one.
