Can someone explain to me...
Why I should care about pips? I see all this discussion about the ranking system. Meanwhile, I feel 0 incentive to rank up. There is still no reward for ranking up. Why should I be motivated to pip?

In theory, if the matchmaking works well enough, a proper ranking system would give you matches with players who are similarly skilled as you. Especially as solo surv, that's not unimportant.

You shouldn't.
It's literally only the people that think rank actually means anything that are doing it and they are struggling for queues.
I have said many times on this very forum that incentives should have been added either first or at the same time.

Almost every game that has something of a competitive aspect to it will reward you for reaching certain ranks or milestones. That is what motivates me to rank up in those games, not playing with people of a similar skill level. That is not my responsibility as a player. It is not my responsibility to make sure I am matched with appropriate players. This is the devs' responsibility.

You shouldn't. No reward, nothing. Just play.

If the ranking system was actually meaningful, the incentive for me to pip would be to get matched with people of equal experience and skill.

Ok. So then why are people so concerned about pipping being too hard? Isn't the matchmaking better if players are clustered together more tightly?

The issue with hard pipping is extremely long Lobby Qs for killers at rank 1 (I have 20+ minutes).

Ok that's fair, long queue times are frustrating. But it seems idiotic to care about pips for the sake of having a high rank as if it means anything.

It means something.
It means you have enough experience and knowledge to be able to reach Rank 1. Additionally, it means you've played against players that also have enough experience and knowledge to play in Rank 1.
Rank 1 doesn't mean you are the best player, it means you're at least not a complete idiot, something you can't say for sure about rank 10-20 players.
People would lie if they said Rank 1 and Rank 20 matches feel exactly the same. There is a difference, Rank 1 IS harder to play because the players you face are usually more experienced than lower rank players. I'm an experienced player aswell, I'm not interested in stomping Rank 10 players so I try to reach high rank for the sake of balance, not just for me but for the players I go up against.

What do you mean 'try' to reach a high rank? You shouldn't have to play any specific way to rank up right? In any competitive you'd be assigned to the rank you belong in by simply playing.

Of course you do. You need to meet the requirements to rank up. Some playstyles allow you to meet those requirements relatively easy while others make it really hard.
That's been said, the ranking system in DbD is by no means a good representation of skill but at least it filters out the complete idiots. It does require basic knowledge and experience to reach Rank 1, so that's at least something.

Yeah. So then I'd have to play a specific way to pip, and the only reward is vsing better players. That's not enough motivation for me to make an effort to pip. It's not my responsibility to ensure I don't vs players that are less skilled than me. That is the developers' responsibility. If I received shards or BP or cosmetics or w/e I'd make an effort to pip. But I do agree with you that you need some skill and knowledge to reach r1, it's not completely meaningless.

The ranking system, flawed as it is, is the devs way of trying to match you with players of roughly the same skill as you. It's not the devs' fault if people exploit the system any more than it's the cops' fault if people break the law.

I think you misunderstood me @Orion
I don't throw games to derank or anything like that, I just don't make an effort to pip actively. I just play the game doing what I think is the best course of action without considering how that affects my pips. I like being chased a lot and I usually safety pip so I hang in purple ranks most of the time now. I never implied I'm exploiting anything, tho I'm aware some players actively derank.
Edit: sorry for the rambling, my point is there's no motivation for me to try to pip.

That's fine, people shouldn't play for pips anyway. Pips come naturally from how well you play the game (according to what the devs consider skill).
