Struggles of a solo survivor
I've been playing too long and I don't care about rank anymore, but I do want to get up to the comfortable purple ranks. I'm scratching rank 12 again but help me lord, it cannot be done when your teammates are s***. I have to rely on my teammates to put me in a good situation for survival to rank up, but if they DC, kill themselves on hook, go down too quickly, or idiotically refuse to save you from hook, gens can't get done unless I become selfish and worry purely about myself. Is it wrong for me to be selfish as a solo survivor because I feel like I have to be?

I play by a rule I have made for myself during solos if the survivors manage to get down in 10 seconds I let them die. No point in saving a team that can't last 10 seconds when you can make a chase last a minute easily.

Maybe I should do something like that. I swear, if it wasn't a necessity to rely on mediocre teammates, I'd be happier.

I love playing solo survivor but it's just those handful of potatoes who still don't know how to loop or hide properly who always make me want to yeet my controller out my window.

Soloists have to work so much harder to stay alive but you need your teammates to do so, especially if you want to pip. At least the EGC gives you the option to escape when the odds are against you.

One of the biggest problems with Solo is lack of information which results in a lot of inefficiency.
For example when someone is hooked usually 2 or even 3 survivors stop doing what they are doing and go unhook, thats a ton of work lost in gens and an inmense risk if the killer catches 1 survivor going towards the hook he catches the entire team.
That sort of comunication is why SWF is so incredible strong and they can gen rush so fast.

100% the struggle is real
I had a game where we played against a freddy who wasn't even good this is the chronological order of what ######### went down in that game
-I spawned next to everyone and I started working on a gen
-someone got put in dreamstate and went down within 20 secs
-I saved him with BT and freddy chased me
-I looped freddy around one pallet for about 2 mins then I got downed
-The guy I saved was still in dream state and when he got down he DC'D
-The next guy that was coming for me was crouching around and when he went into dream state he DC'D not even downed or hit
-The last guy sat in killer shack and was tbagging and when freddy downed him he DC'D
all within the time it took for me to get into struggle state

@legion_main My God that is an epically bad team.
I can't wait for dedicated servers and hopefully they will put something in place to punish chronic DCs. I can understand the need to allow for DCs because sometimes things are beyond a players control like really bad lag, but DCing is getting out of hand. I don't know how anyone can rationalize DCing because you messed up. You'll never get better if you don't learn from your mistakes.
It is possible to escape a game when you get hooked/downed first.Getting hooked first is a good omen for me. I usually survive those games for some reason.

@feechima apparently we have different omens getting hooked first results in death for me

As for the OP post. Sometimes you have to be selfish. But I operate under the idea that the more feet on the ground the better. I can't let my team go to hell around me without trying to save because it hinders my ability to get things done. However, I don't do hook rushing for saves. Killers usually linger and check the immediate area around the hook, so I stay on a gen. Most of the time that means I don't get the save, but I will get the gen. Gotta keep that pressure up.
If I'm having a particularly bad day running solo, I switch my build to more altruistic and run We'll Make it, BT, Botany, or Empathy. Especially if the killer is tunneling off hook its best to get vulnerable players all healed up.

Worst thing is when they don't understand what's going on in the game and what to do in certain situations. Like I don't expect you to loop the killer for 5 gens but I've seen people that hide somewhere while I'm on the hook and the killer just downed someone across the map. Like he's miles away just save me already and stop wasting time!
Stuff like this makes me commit die.
And this happens in purple ranks too.

Well you don't need to survive to rank up. I play for myself as a solo and aid my team when its beneficial to my progress. There's little point in being the team savior if its bringing higher risk on you with no guarantee the favor will be returned.

You don't need to survive, but it helps. Getting downed even once is gold Unbroken, getting killed is only silver. That is if you lasted long enough (I want to say nine minutes+). Why it sucks to go against killers who don't give you any good evader points in return, like huntress (often throwing hatchets at you out of chase), Billy (ends chases quickly with insta saw), and Legion (gets first hits fast and then just ends chase to hit others).

Yes. There's been many times that I've ranked up even if I didn't survive. The matches I've been having since I've made this post have been a lot better and I have been ranking up like I've wanted.

i tend to unhook people if they unhook me as a courtesy.i been lately just smashing gens and assuming people will unhookem if im far away.ibwanna helpem but theres times i just say letem die

Run Kindred, it's one of the most useful perks in soloq.

(No offense)
I think the whole ineffeciency caused by lack of information was intended way back then, and some survivors got too used to having those swf advantages, or see those swf advantages and sets them as the 'norm'.
"Teamplay is / was optional". Over the vcourse of this game's lifespan the survivors got too altruistic and stuck in a team mentality when there always was the possibility of making sure YOU stay alive. Survivors are 4 people sharing the same goal, not a team. I dont see penalties for every guy not getting out or when you sandbag others.

If I run BT at low ranks, that will easily buy me some time. Possibly an idea.
Being stuck at low ranks due to a bug, I can safely say that while stupid teammates do happen, it's definitely a very mixed bag. Best way to carry that rank is running BT and avoiding taking the aggro as people are often too scared to go for saves if they don't know the killer is already chasing someone...and you only know that if you see it or there's an obsession being chased right now... (latest live stream gives me hope on this front though!)
As mentioned above though, a potential solution to this issue is Kindred!
At higher ranks I like to run perks like bond so I know where people being chased are, or so that I'm in a chase, I know not to run the killer to a gen that's been worked on, for example, as that can harm everyone massively, buying the killer a fair bit of time. May be worth trying it at lower rank. Though I've found since prestiging, my luck with perks are horrific so I'm using farming ones for the most part.
@Raptorrotas the survivors are by definition a team, whether you like it or not.

Sometimes the random teammates will be so bad that even the killer will notice and take pity on the ones who play well.
I was in a game playing as Freddy and there were two guys lefts with one gen remaining. One of them was a rank 6 survivor, the other was like rank 15. I was chasing the rank 6 guy around for a good ten minutes before the last gen was finally done. I was able to down the rank 6 guy before he could reach an exit gate and the other ass (who was fully healthy) left him to die. I couldn't kill the rank 6 guy. I teased him for a little bit for giving me such a run around but then I just let him go. It wouldn't have been right to kill him. I wish I would have killed his crappy teammate instead. I was Freddy, the other guy wasn't even in dream state, and it took him ten minutes to complete a gen and I had no perks to slow down the gens and then he leaves the guy who actually did all the work to die.
Oh yeah and then the rank 15 guy messages me to tell me I suck. Like #########. lol.

Thats not a problem with solos. Thats a problem with SWF raising the bar and expecting too much from Kindred-less solos. The whole original concept of the game was the uncertainty of someone going for a rescue or not, acting as a way of lengthening games.

I know about Kindred and being in a SWF is essentially a free Kindred, free Alert and bunch of other aura reading and detection perks.
As I said, main problem Solos have compared to SWFs is the lack of information you can get with Discord/TS/Ventrilo/etc which results in a lot of inefficiency, the hook example was just an example.

Playing solo survivor is shittiest experience you will have. Can't wait 3 years for the devs to fix to it.

@KillermainBTWm8 what if it's a Spirit or Nurse who chased them? Does the rule differ?

I had a game with a Laurie, Ace and Meg. Vs Huntress
After Laurie and Ace dead, I was injured, Meg got chased. I med kit self heal then finish a gen. It was likely 3min and Meg still not take a single hit.
Meg ran pass me fixing 95% gen and Huntress decided to chase me, it last only more than 30s and I died by the 3rd hook.
Hatch open but Huntress found it like immediately. EGC was up, Meg got chased again. And she can make the chase last the whole EGC timer then shes dead by Entity. I just feel bad for that player. Without EGC she could survive. (Shes rank 7)

@Poweas the rule does defer the rule also defers if it turns out it is a fluke and the survivor has a good chance next time around

I've had worse... and I've contributed to worse!
Not in the sense of playing that inept, but going for some weird dumb stunts that made me think, "Well it sounded like fun at the time!"
