Efficiency and red bar on gens.
So several patches ago this change is shown on the wiki.
- Generator Repair by multiple Survivors will now correctly show the efficiency penalty by turning the progress bar Red.
I never understood why the bar would randomly turn red like the killer had Thanataphobia or something. But by the looks of that. WTH does that even mean? If you use a toolbox and someone else joins in on the gen do you lose efficiency? I've honestly never understood what the efficency stat actually does. Charges as in how long I can use it and speed as in how much those charges repair. At least that was my understanding.
So what exactly does efficiency do and should you NOT be using your toolbox on a gen with other survivors?

When you work on a gen by yourself, your repair speed is 1 charge per second( a gen has 80 charges). When you work on a gen with a body, you both actually work at 0.9 charge per second speed, hence the red bar.
It has nothing to do with toolboxes’ efficiency.

So it should turn red every single time someone is on one with me? I will have to check that in a bit as I could swear it wasn't always showing as red.

Yes, as long as one of you don’t use prove thyself.

I remember back when it would just be normal colored with multiple people on a single generator. However, since this was added, it's always been red for me when worked on in a group, without Prove Thyself.
Yellow when I repair with a toolbox alone.
Normal color for normal repairs alone.

To keep it simple:
Red bar = You're working slower than you could be
White bar = You're working at the normal speed
Yellow bar = You're working faster than normal speed
(These only reflect your speed. It can still be faster overall since there's multiple people adding progress to it.)
Generators have a repair speed inefficiency to them when multiple people are repairing the same generator. The more people repairing it, the slower each of them works. This does not affect your toolbox usage rate. Even if the bar is red, your toolbox is still letting you repair faster than if you were doing a regular repair.
The more complicated way of explaining it is that each survivor applies one "charge" per second to a generator, and a generator takes 80 charges to complete. Each additional survivor on a generator decreases your charge rate by 0.1. For example, with two people on a generator, each person will output 0.9 charges per second (for a total of 1.8 charges per second). With three people, you'll each apply 0.8 charges per second (for a total of 2.4 charges per second).
Because you are outputting fewer than one charges per second, your bar appears red to let you know that you are working slower. The colour of the bar only shows your output, not the combined speed of everyone on the generator. If each survivor was working on a different generator, they would be putting out a total of 4 charges per second. Prove Thyself can counter this penalty and allow multiple survivors to work on the same generator while still applying 1 charge per second each.

Thanks for the detailed response. Funny is I notice the loss but it sounds like it should barely be noticeable. Whenever 4 people are on a gen or 3 I wonder why it wasnt faster.
