"Pay to Win" in Dead by Daylight?
Hag and Clown chapters, Ruin and Pop Goes perks. It is impossible to reach red ranks without these 2 perks and stay there bcs Gatekeeper sux and doesn't reward defending last 3 gens even if no one escaped.
Yeah, you can do this ... as the Nurse, and also if you play vs potatoes. But Nurse is gonna be nerfed like Legion, so, what we will have to do?

You don't have to have ruin or pop to make it to red ranks. As long as you know when to cut off chases early to apply gen pressure you should be able to score high enough on gatekeeper. Even without nurse. Not saying with someone like legion or doctor, but Billy and spirit can be up there with nurse too

Pretty sure a 5 minute search on youtube will present several cases that would debunk this theory.

You don’t need any perks to win. It’s going to be harder, yes, but still very possible.
Also, you can buy Hag and Clown with shards. If you’re on console, Hag actually comes with the base game.

@Brok3n I was telling about how Gatekeeper emblem forces to run these perks a lot. Pop and Ruin are meta-perks, you must have them or you'll be destroyed by swf or just a 4 good survivors

You can earn these by playing, stop trying to make BHVR seem dirty.

paying for the killers is paying for different gameplay, not necessarily better killers. whether theyre better or not depends on your ability to learn and play that killer. and for perks, theres the shrine of secrets. yes its not great but still possible to get those perks without ever buying the killers. and as other people are pointing out, they arent necessary, just gotta play around it.

You know Nurse isn’t the only viable killer, right? Any killer can do well at high ranks without ruin or PGTW but it’ll be much harder.

Yes, to a degree, paying for guaranteed access to perks is always pay to win to some extent. You can access it freely but it does help you win. Technically a free to play player CAN have all the same perks as a pay to play player, but it's much slower and harder and they'll never have all the killers without buying licensed ones.
On the plus side, 3 of the strongest killers (probably of the top 5) are all free, so you always have the potential to play strong killers without paying.

A game having paid DLC doesnt make it pay to win, especially when MOST DLC can be gotten with ingame currency and the perks by themselves can be found in the shrine. Im pretty sure NONE of the licensed killers who cant be bought using shards are NOT considered high tier, while Nurse, Billy, Huntress (and hag on consoles) ALL rank higher.

You can also just wait for them to appear in the shrine. And no, they're not required at red ranks. I rarely even use Ruin/hex perks as I don't enjoy the possibility of losing them early game. Pop was just recently buffed so I've been using it more often, but sloppy butcher is actually my go to.
You seem to need more experience in this game, I suggest finding a few dbd Content Creators on youtube and twitch and learn from them.

However on the "pay to win" topic, one could say a couple cosmetics such as the Ghost Face cosmetic that removes those ribbons which help survivors spot Ghost face could fall under that category.
I personally bought it for him because I found those ribbons to be a poor design for a stealth killer, and I'm seeing a difference. Unless it's been fixed, I swear you can also see them through walls making it harder for GF to mindgame at some loops.

Top 5 killers (nurse, Billy, spirit, hag, huntress) are original content, 3 of them come with the base pc game (4 come with base console). That means the 5 best options for ranking up and winning games are all obtainable without spending a single red cent beyond the game's base cost. Don't forget that every 2-3 months the game and all the dlc go on sale for half off, as well.
And if that weren't enough, both perks you seem to want are also attached to OC killers, one of which is in top 5 naturally AND bundled into the base console game, so you only need to drop shards on them.

A game that's regularly $10 has DLC? Madness! Let alone that most of the dlc is like 3-4 dollars when one of their bi-monthly sales drop, how ruinous

Well I play on PS4 and the hag is free so I just need to get her to 35 so I can get it ruin as a teachable and teach it to the doc

By time you're good enough to get to red ranks hex ruin will have came to the shrine. Also nurse isn't getting nurfed. Her Op addons are. Yes they said maybe a small tweak to her base kit but they aren't changing her power in anyway maybe just a numbers change like blink speed

You have several choices in this game. You can pay for dlc, or you can use shards. You can gather the perks you need from the shrine. You can use other killers and/ or other perks in order to secure your success. Others have done it. Yes it is harder, but the choices are there and they are your own to do with as you will.

Or you can just play, reach whatever rank you can reach and get games with players of a similar skill level and ignore rank because it's worthless anyway

I was more alluding towards his desire to get the gatekeeper achievement. I couldn't give a rats fart in a tin whistle about rank lol I agree with your sentiment to a degree however.

Gatekeeper is the emblem for keeping gens for being done. I doubt he'd care much about achievements if he isn't buying DLC since there's about 50 that require playing DLC characters.

Since both killers can be bought for Iridescent Shards.. it's definitely not pay-to-win.
Not to mention that their perks can end up in the Shrine of Secrets.. sooo.. yeah.

U don't need ruin if u know when to end a chance and u can get hag with shards which u gain by leveling up so its not a pay to win, to get to red ranks u just need to be really good and know what your doing

Ash was p2w until mettle got changed. The Halloween chapter had Decisive Strike until it got nerfed.
Licensed killers don't have any op perks anymore and good perks like Pgtw can be unlocked with playtime. Doesn't take more than a few weeks of active playing to get 9000 shards.

Yea this. The fact you can get these killers without paying money is why it's not pay-to-win. Just play enough to get 9k shards, get Hag/Clown, dump BP into them for Ruin/Pop. It's a grind but not pay-to-win.
The only perk you could argue is "pay-to-win" is BBQ but at the end of the day you have a ton of other options to use in it's place AND it's one of the easiest perks to counter.

You can buy Clown and Hag with Shards. Only p2w perk for killers is BBQ (which is not needed, but personally I cant play without it).
Also I'm not 100% sure if it works, but you can get 1m BP and shards for shrine of secrets bp boost, buy killer from steam, get their teachibles and then refund as steam has 2 hour refund policy.

You dont need any perks to play the game and get to your actual rank. If anything perks only serve to get you to a rank you wouldn't have been able to reach normallym
People tend to confuse what they need with what they want.
P2W is a term which describes something which means you gain a significant advantage over others in a PvP game which can only ever be achieved through paying real money.
This would only be relevant with licensed killers if they were made to compete with the strongest free ones but many people would scream it's unfair. This is in part why licensed killers apart from perks can't be made too strong.

If anything its pay to speed up your grind.
You can get the perks in the shrine, and most killers with shards.
You cant buy something that others will have absolutely zero access to. That item just doesnt exist. Except killer powers, arguably.
Besides the fact that you can win games with 0 perks or addons. It's more of a quality of life to have certain perks.
Also, isnt hag free now? Or do they still charge yall for her on pc...

you can get any killer for free via shards.
you can also spend those shards just on the perks you like in the shrine of secrets.
the only killers that are literally unobtainalbe with shards are licensed characters, for different reasons (licensing).

When 3 very strong killers are all free. One being the literal best and another being 2-4th. The few that can potentially get away with not using Ruin, Pop Goes, addons and the like.

- Alright allow me to show you a different perspective:
- There's Shrine of secrets via which you can purchase the perks that you wish to use > You may use the argument "But the perks are RNG based and you have to pay for them!". Yes it's RNG but if you think about it, you're getting those perks for free, the only resource required for the perks is playing the game to obtain the shards. I don't see how this would be hard if you enjoy and play the game.
- The nurse is not the only viable killer, it's best to enjoy the game for what it is instead of "Wanting to win them all" as one would say. There's always superior killers but if you're familiar with the game you won't have as much trouble. As a killer you have to learn how to cut distance between you and the survivor, ability to mindgame and make fast decisions (For example when to vault a certain window, when to commit to a chase and when to give up).
- Continuing on the statement of "shards" and "playing the game", along with the ability to purchase perks you're able to purchase some killers and survivors, thus getting all 3 perks guaranteed.

I've reached red ranks with trapper without those perks. Its hard but its doable.

I absolutely guarantee you a new player can get 9000 shards before getting to red ranks. If you chose not to then it's your problem.
Besides, you can get to red ranks by just playing enough and steadily improving in this game. Making it to rank 1 is a bit harder, but getting to red ranks... Not really.
And finally, there is no ranked reward so I don't know why anybody would are but w/e

You can get all 3 of these characters/perks simply by playing the game and it doesn't take super long to get enough currency to do so. Troll harder next time
