Is HIDE OR DIE a threat to Dead By Daylight?
I’ve seen numerous threads on this discussion but all have seemed to cease late-August. I just thought; “Why not readdress it?”, “Like, what’s there to lose?”. So, I did.
THE BASICS
From what I know, Friday the 13th was the first Asymmetrical Horror Game released on public builds. Then on there, we saw games like this here, Dead By Daylight, release too. Inspiration is the least of our concerns, however. We’re talking about playability here.
Dead By Daylight released publicly on the 14th of June, 2016, under Behaviour Interactive. It was labelled, and still is to this day, “An asymmetric Horror game”, with the motto “Death is not an escape”. It attracted a wide audience from all corners of the horror community, a huge chunk being a cult following of Friday the 13th. The game swelled into a monolith in the following years. By 2018, it was at a good point. Well, to say the least, that is. It was doing “well”, so to speak. There didn’t seem to be any significant threat or one imminent, either, for that matter.
But, enough of that... I shouldn’t be giving background information on a forum dedicated to that very fact. I’m here to talk about HIDE OR DIE vs DEAD BY DAYLIGHT. So, the basics... Hide or Die poses a threat to DBD. There you go. Bye now.
EXPLANATION
Now, don’t get me wrong - I’m loyal to DBD. I’m straight-faced loyal. And I’ve never played HOD, either. So I’m not one to reference here. Take my word with a grain of salt. When DBD mentions “Asymmetric horror” I instantly think that Friday feel. Ya know, lay down, popcorn, scary-Friday-night slasher kinda thing. That vibe. And, DBD fulfilled that for me for, let’s say, 2 years? My first game on a test build on PC that my friend let me try was crazy.
I loved it so much. But, that magic fled me in the space of 2 years. Which is quite good, I imagine, but that’s not it... even if I were to move in from this game, maybe one day I’d wish to return, only to see it had been taken out by some copycat million-dollar budget corporate arse company that sought to steal that magic from DBD - but no. What am I thinking. I sound mental. I’m probably just making a big deal out of nothing. But I don’t care, I’m addressing this because I’m interested in HOD. And DBD, both equally the same.
HOD is a wide scale asymmetric Horror slasher game, similar to DBD yes, but the sheer expanse of the maps and playable ground is INSANE. I’ve also watched a great amount of gameplay, BETA testings, and countless videos on it. It’s safe to say that the game is AMAZING. But, so is DBD.
But DBD Doesn’t boast the same mechanics, the same features... it sorta lacks some of those vibes I mentioned, ya know? Like c’mon, literally just check out the picture I attached on this thread. It’s great. I know it’s just art for the game, but it’s certainly much more Friday-night slasher asymmetric Horror to me than DBD is.
But I don’t know, is it just me?
YOUR TURN
Now, feel free to go check it out yourself. I’m attaching several more pictures below just in case you wanna quickly see em and go. And please, no toxicity on this forum, just honest opinions and your own personal beliefs on the matter. Pick a side, DBD or HOD! Or, be like me, and join both. :)
Thank you all for taking the time to (hopefully) read this discussion. Now it’s your turn.
P.S I tagged Halloween because this whole discussion gives me the Halloween vibe talkin bout HOD!

No. With DBD just getting Stranger Things, they have the biggest IP in their expertise currently. Hide or die is not a threat and I highly doubt it will ever be a threat.
8 -
Thanks for your input! However, I highly doubt it will “never be a threat”. Judging by your name, you’re a Stranger Things fan and that’s what attracted you most to DBD. Hide or Die has a chance to be a threat, so I wouldn’t say I’d doubt it.

Hide or Die already released and it died almost immediately. Made less of a wave than Last Year, and that game never even released on Steam.
9 -
Now that’s what I like to hear! Last year did die off extremely quickly... Hide or Die is slowly creeping back up though, so we never know. Anything’s possible, hey?
0 -
No. I've watched some streamers play Hide or Die. Looked boring to me. Not interested at all in playing it.
3 -
Hide or Die a threat?
Lol, no
2 -
I am a vivid Stranger Things fan, but I first decided to watch Stranger Things waayyyy after I started playing DBD in 17. In the 2 and a half years I've been playing this game, I'm pretty certain nothing will come close to it, not even Hide or Die. Don't get me wrong though, I was super excited when they announced Stranger Things.
1 -
That’s your opinion, so thanks for sharing...
0 -
Haha you’d be surprised what can be a threat to what, honestly...
0 -
All games which ever threatened DbD in any way died immediately and I think this game is already dead.
3 -
Same! I’m in your circumstance, only I didn’t come to these forums still September of 18, and literally wasn’t even active... regardless, I’m kinda hoping HOD rocks it’s own boat one day and DBD never has to have that issue with it. They’re both honestly decent games. I just see more potential in DBD.
1 -
Not already dead, and please don’t be biased without an accurate point. Games can be taken out at the most unexpected moments. :)
0 -
Yup. "This game is going to kill DbD" is basically a meme now.
0 -
Exactly my point. I enjoy both.
1 -
I frankly would like to play an alternative to DBD.
Now don't get me wrong. I'm a DBD addict. But this game has so much ######### in it that needs fixing. It would be a breath of fresh air to have an alternative.
2 -
Within this community. These types of games don’t attract a huge audience like kiddy games like Fortnite, per say. And honestly, now I see why this discussion ended. People are just that biased not to see potential in another game regardless if this one is better... lol
0 -
I didn't see anybody discussing about it for a while, so I consider it dead. And I am not biased, there is really nothing suggesting Hide or Die have a chance to "replace" DbD.
1 -
I think the only asymmetrical horror game, other than DbD, that didn't crash and burn immediately on release was Friday the 13th. I miss that game. I enjoyed its looping and core gameplay more than DbD, though DbD has more diversity in playstyles on both sides and would always have more longevity due to its DLC model.
2 -
THANK YOU for binging something fresh to the table! I agree with you 100%. But I still remain loyal to DBD.
0 -
Did you throughout read through my thread? It’s evident in your replies you haven’t. I actually never mentioned it “replacing” DBD.
0 -
Yeah, that’s why I credited it in “THE BASICS” on the thread. I miss those long hours spent terrorising Crystal Lake. Ahhh... memories.

I looked the game up and I noticed a few things.
- Not on consoles. I play DbD on Xbox. I don't really PC game anymore.
- This in the description, "However, with anyone being able to become a hunter, you never know if your teammates are trustworthy or if one of them is just waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike." Is this another one of those games where I have to take turns between survivor and killer? I hate that. I like DbD because I don't have to play survivor if I don't want to.
- Multiple highly rated Steam reviews saying this game is dead and has no players. The reviews are recent and left by players with dozens of hours of game time.
So far, not looking like much of a threat to me.

Your sarcasm is noted. Take a moment to breathe some fresh air. Nobody’s saying a threat is just gonna arise instantly. I made this thread to get people’s opinions, not for them to point out obvious differences between the two. For instance, DBD drew inspiration from the 13th, but it didn’t rip it off. Same goes for HOD. They spice things up. Just, relax... nobody’s saying DBD’s just gonna cease to exist. HOD is just a chance at a bit of change. I enjoy both, regardless. :D

I'm not biased at all and I'm far from being a DbD "fanboy". But DbD having flaws does not make other games like Hide or Die or Last Year less boring.
Also according to steam charts, HoD has on average 9 players in the last 30 days. That is pretty much the definition of "dead".
0 -
You're reading a lot of intent into my post that wasn't there. There was no sarcasm, either. I literally just looked it up and listed what I noticed first.
I like the idea of a larger world and more open-ended gameplay. My least favorite thing about this game is the constant rush. I would have been and still am open to alternative titles. This just doesn't look like one that's going to do much for me.
1 -
I saw some gameplay, it looks very boring
People will stop playing it real soon
1 -
I am highly looking forward to project resistance... The Survivor game play looks interesting and fun.. different. Plus coming to console also so bonus.. I doubt it will out do dbd nor does it have to for me! I'm really excited about it regardless.

Right now, Hide or Die has 0 people playing.
The HoD devs have released a statement talking about how their systems haven't maintained the playerbase post-launch. They're going to try again, but that's exactly what Deathgarden did and currently DG had 42 people playing as of this post.
In order for anything to be a "threat" to DbD it will need to be complete at launch with minimal bugs and fleshed out systems that are engaging to the players.
The gameplay itself must be new and fresh but still enjoyable on its own.
Even today, newer players of DbD do not stick with it for long because of many of the systems and issues that exist. This is also why DbD only had a peak of 47k players during the last 30 days which included a free weekend and the release of the Stranger Things dlc.
Right now the average player count for the past 30 days is still around 20k which is the same it's been since June 2018.
Dead by Daylight can't grow an audience, the majority of players are those who've become invested in the game since the beginning. Newer players leave quite quickly.
In order for a new competitor to be a threat do DbD, it's going to have to solve all of DbD's problems and release the game in a complete state.
Hide or Die may not kill DbD, but I hope they can fix their game in a way that the DbD devs refuse to.

Thank you for this wonderful input. I’m not even gonna argue with you as your statement is extremely truthful.

You never know. The world works in mysterious ways.

Thanks for rephrasing your words. Can you see where I may have identified some sarcasm? Sorry. And yes, I highly doubt it will in turn take out DBD. :)
1 -
Point made. That’s enough of that. Quite obvious it’s basically dead. Doesn’t mean it can’t come back, eh? :D

Noted. But personally, I don’t like Resident Evil 😋

Already been mentioned. Please don’t repost.

People already stopped playing bud

Per Steamcharts, Hide or Die has never even cracked four digits. I'm pretty sure it's not a threat to DBD.
0 -
Terror, first allow me to compliment your enthusiasm. It's much appreciated.
Like another user mentioned, earlier in the month the HOD dev's decided to completely switch up their game plan, and our anticipating their relaunch soon.
They have actually decided to use more of the DBD formula, where it will either be 4v1, or 5v1. And the Hunter(Killer) role will be permanent per round. The maps will also be shrunk down to accommodate this new approach.
I was actually just visiting the discord server today, to read up on news (don't know why, since I'm only a console player whom can't even play it, lol). One of the dev's mentioned they are a fan of DBD's progression/leveling, and they intend on relaunching the game with a similar system.
So I suppose now more than ever, they will be more closely resembling DBD. The question remains whether that title will continue being more of a casual/party asymm, or have a more competitive edge.
Personally, I am keeping a closer eye on Last Year: The Nightmare, with their upcoming relaunch (speculation points towards late October). While I appreciate HOD's art style, LY is just impeccable look wise. But with plans of porting to console soon after the PC relaunch, and with HOD not having any console plans at the time, LY will end up being the initial true competition. Especially with rumours of the F13 servers shutting down by years end. Those players will want a replacement that's not DBD, and LY will be that similar Party Horror game.
Excuse my novella, this is my first post on the forums, got a bit carried away, ha.

I kickstarted HOD and what the game has become was a bit... lacking. They relased a backer beta and based off some very bad feedback, changed the game entirely that they pitched on Kickstarter. This made some people feel a bit betrayed.
Enough people complained and they added the old game mode back in but the game felt SUPER rushed. They had this release date that, to me, seemed unreasonable for the state it was in. When they released in early access I tried it and was underwhelmed. Many concerns and points everyone, including myself, had said and predicted in the Discord kinda came true.
The best thing about the game was the atmosphere. Actually hiding from the killer could be tense. However, once he found you, you were pretty much toast. For me everything felt stiff and sluggish.
This is the problem we are at now with early access beta testing. Using players to beta test your game can backfire big time if they all dislike it. They don't have NDAs or loyalty and will tell the world and then your game tanks.
I miss F13 a lot. I feel it had more variety for different playstyle depending on the kind of gamer you were. DBD can feel a little 2 dimensional at times but HOD is just plain flat in it's current state.
TL;DR: No, HOD won't hobble DBD in the slightest.

Thank you for your comment! I don’t mind your novella at all! My guess is you saw this thread as your first post and made an account to respond to it? Welcome to the community!

You’re just becoming annoying. JUST BECAUSE PEOPLE STOP PLAYING A GAME, it doesn’t mean that it can’t COME BACK!
is that clearer? :P
0 -
It's going to be insanely tough to compete with DbD when it has been around for years and has a bunch of licenses attached to it. I can't see any game competing with it well enough.
0 -
I prefer Hide or Die sadly, I enjoy being able to actually kill the killer as the final survivor
1 -
I like being annoying tbh
It's easier than being nice to everyone
It could come back, yes, unlikely but yes
Unless they do a complete overhaul I don't see it being anything more than a forgettable game not worth the money
1 -
Thank you for finally seeing the point
0 -
Yeah, that’s a mechanic that DBD doesn’t have. But then again, it’d totally wreck the purpose of escaping lol
0 -
To be fair, F13 had both but it wasn't easy to do... at first.
0 -
True...

Hey I do have a statistic for Hide or Die's player base. It is dead. One player 6 hours ago. 3 was the 24 hour peak. This game is, for all intents and purposes, Dead.
0 -
I don't really care about player bases at the moment. Players can unexpectedly rise in numbers, and besides, we've already ruled out that the game is dead.
