How do you all feel about Ruin?
Hi 1st poster here,
So i've been playing dbd with a friend who has a little over 1300 hours into the game, where as i have 30 hours into the game. I've bought the game like half a year ago and have barely touched it for a simple reason. When you start the game and want to play it with a friend ( who doesn't play games with their friends that's what they're for) you have little to no usefull perks to play the game, whereas the killer has already gotten all the usefull perks, and for some reason literally every killer will use ruin. This makes the game in my opinion way too annoying, i like the gameplay surv v killer reparing gens, but if the killer has ruin you're forced to go look for the totem for the next 2-5 min depending on what map. Yes you can try and stick a gen that you will get a couple of perfect skill checks on but definitely not all, well if you don't get all of them you have to spend way more time fixing the gen. The game gets very stale because as previously stated every killer you run into has ruin. My friend just said well i never fail the skill check, which i still find annoying because i play Osu! (rhythm game) every single day and enjoy playing AR 10 which has a 400 ms approach rate (you see a circle close in and withing 400 ms you need to click the circle it's closing in on) the most. My proposition was, either making it so that if you do a perfect skill check you wouldn't get any further skill checks on that gen ( you alone ) but this would be too broken again for survivor. So i thought why not make it so that if you perfect the skill check you won't get any further Ruin skill checks on that gen. This could atleast give you a good chance at fixing the gen even if there is Ruin. As previously stated if 14/15 killers run ruin, the other probably being not owning Hag dlc or not wanting to run it, something is wrong.
Looking forward to your replies.

Ruin, the most used killer perk in this game - for a good reason.
while i think it could be a little stronger, i find it to be all but overpowered. the thing with Ruin is, that it is a Hex perk, which means it is removable from the game entirely by the survivors, if they cleanse the totem. that massive downside justifies the stregth of Hex perks, as they are supposed to be a huge influence on the game, as long as the totem is active.
the main problem with ruin is actually, how easily it can be avoided - hitting great skillchecks is not that hard, especially if you, like your friend, put some time into the game.
honestly, imo the perk is not really worth running, though i do understand why so many players do pick it: gen times.
especially in higher ranks, generators are done way too quickly, leaving the killer pretty much no time to do anything. i am not joking when i say that there are games that are over within 5 minutes with a survivor victory, which is honestly just absurd. and to prevent that killers choose ruin as their perk of choice to slow down the early game, as this is where they have no pressure and the most gens get done at once (usually 3 within 70 - 90 seconds).
if you want to counter ruin, here are 3 things you can do:
1) power through the gen. dont waste your time by searching the totem, just power through and practise hitting the great skillchecks. important when you try to do this is, that you do NOT work with multiple players on the same gen!
2) search the totem. thats the most common one and honestly, its not that hard. in the end its all just your map knowledge and you remembering the totem spots.
3) gen tapping. i hate myself for suggesting this, but this is a legitimate strategy after all, so... if you continuously start and stop working on the gen, you prevent it from giving you skillchecks. please note though, that this will lead to you wasting more time than normal with the gen repair and that its the least skilled play you could do.

For some Killers, Ruin is actually quite needed in a regular match... especially at Red Ranks for me. For example, Myers had Ruin because he needs to slow the game down to activate his Tier ll...
Any M1 Killer also needs it due to the limitations of M1 Killers as a whole and the overall map design being against them over other Killers. There are some exceptions like Legion, Nurse, Billy, Demogorgon, etc. But even some of those Killers (Except Billy and Nurse) could use a boost in time depending on how they do.
Spirit doesn't really need Ruin either, but Killers like Clown and Pig who have a hard time applying map pressure (I'm talking basekit) do need it...
It's really hard to say my personal opinion on it, but I feel if other perks picked up the slack with reducing a bit of time (Like how Corrupt Intervention has) than i'm sure Ruin would be used a lot less... But as for how I think about it... Unless the Killer really does need it, I don't really like facing a Nurse with Ruin or a Billy with Ruin because of how they really don't need it... But it can't really be helped at times.

As Killer I hate using Ruin even though it is Needed to stop gen rusher, but I stopped using it recently after the 2x bloodhunt weekend. I finally got all the killers I own to level 40 and got their teachables. Ruin is just tiresome perk even As survivors it was just repetitive. It never bother me cause I can push through it, but 70% of the time my teammates can’t and it Get pop 10 seconds into the game and that was one less perk have now. I feel comfortable with my current build BBQ PGTW (Nurses/Thana) And Bloodhound, I Tend to try and keep myself at rank 10+ so I don’t have to use ruin. I hate purple and red ranks. Ruin just seems like a requirement at purple and red ranks if you wanna use killers that aren’t (Spirit Nurse or Billy’s ), But Even Then I still See Nurses Billy’s And spirits running it when they don’t really need it. Sometimes I get so irritated with Ruin I just leave match and get off the game.

One of the most unhealthy perk ever to be added, true to its name it truly ruined the game. :v
The whole meme about Ruin being mandatory is a self-fulfilling prophecy:
- killer puts on Ruin to combat genspeed
- survivors are forced to adapt by learning hitting all greats and/or all the totem places.
- now you can't take off Ruin as survivors will get the +2% progression from all the greats they can now hit, resulting in even faster gen progression than before people started using Ruin. Also all other totems are dead in 20 seconds.
I mean people prob would have gotten better regardless but Ruin really expedited it.
Also, it's kind of a "sweaty" perk.

I just don't like having to use it every game if I want the game to last longer than 5 minutes.

Two things first, hello, welcome to the forums and @FireHazard, congratulations on becoming a trusted member.
Now, to the topic, I get both using and going against Ruin can get VERY boring but ultimately I don't have a issue with it.

So to answer Mister_xD
1) the normal ms delay on the game is around 160 ms if the host is decent, this results in multiple skill checks not being done properly, yes as i said most not all. So if everyone had his own gen this would still take atleast 2x as long as gens without Ruin. And still with my 30hrs into the game, i'd have around a little under a 100 games, and atleast 95% runs ruin... Hence saying Ruin is overpowered in comparison to all the other hexes in the game.
2) Map knowledge is a key factor to knowing Totem spots no one can deny that but still, trying to find the totem will take you forever because currently there's 32 maps in the game, which would take a very long time learning all the spots.
3) i'm not gonna participate in gen tapping as you said, this would take ages itself.
I've just gotten my 1st killer dlc (michael) and i do agree on the killers side that atm they need Ruin to make the game last longer. But i don't think this is the situation where you want to be in at all. The killers NEED Ruin to make the game last atleast some time to actually be able to win, whereas playing as survivor against 95% Ruin in 100 games is just very very stale. Every single game there's a Ruin totem which is the sole reason as to why i don't like playing this game.
I stand behind my argument, if 95% of a 100 games killers have Ruin, the hex is just too overpowered. Imo they'd need to change it / Make other hexes more powerfull / bring more hexes into the game. But if they don't change Ruin itself it would probably still be run by every killer which is tiresome for survivors.

Hex: Ruin causes an issue with players who either have poor graphics quality and or low frame-rate on his or her computer. In this way, equipment does matter, which is extremely unfortunate for people like me.
Otherwise, it is a perk that can be easily overcome through practice. However, I understand your frustration.

Ruin is a bit tiresome playing on PS4. I'm getting better at hitting those greats, but nowhere near perfect. It's difficult. Ruin really slows down poor to mediocre survivors and has little to no effect on good survivors, from what I can tell.
As killer, I don't use Ruin because it feels like it's always gone within like 30 seconds of the match starting, becoming a wasted perk slot. If you use Thrill of the Hunt to help protect it, now you're using two perk slots for one thing.

I hate using ruin because I don't really want to defend an extra objective (the totem). However, ruin is the best perk for slowing the game down.
I think that without changing the totem mechanics and the game objectives, it would be almost impossible to change ruin while keeping the players happy.

Yes.

Sometime si don't use Hex : Ruin like my Trapper, only hex I run on him is devour, sometime si don't like ruin when going with other hex Perks. I understand why they use ruin as it changes the game drastically like killers who set traps for the first 2-3 mins so they need it.

Lowrank- Not really mandatory. More eh than anything
Highrank- you better have it or be prepared to cry.
Ruin to killer is kinda like DS for surv. Basically its helpful most of the times while sometimes it can be useless. It's too good of a safety net to not bring. Although I'm a paranoid killer and have to run thrill of the Hunt with it to keep it nice and safe...

Terrible... but I have bad experiences with it going down almost instantly.

I think something like ruin should be base kit for killers, but only in a less annoying form until they add a secondary objective to do instead.

I love cleansing a totem.
I like to close my eyes and pretend I'm milking a canker.

Its needed for any killer thats not Nurse, billy or spirit at higher ranks (purple/red)

For my opinion ruin is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to overrated. Many ppl even my best friend thinks that this perk is a must have, and feel naked without this perk. I dont need and have the feeling of having Ruin as MUST HAVE. I can totally agree ruin on Killers with a preporation time like Trapper, Myers, Hag etc but aggresive Killers like Clown, Spirit, Nurse, Wraith etc dont need Ruin at all. You are totally fine with Corrupt, Pop or other perks, they even help you more then Ruin even can. I won alot of games without ruin and having no problems at all. Ppl should step over there fear of genrush and try to play without Ruin.
Obviously I am talking about high ranks with decent survivors that hits great skillcheck, on low ranks with survivors that try to find ruin and dont do gens at all, Ruin is op as ######### there.

I would never allow survivors to disable one of my perks, and I refuse to be a hex guarding killer. Old school killers have been killing survivors before gens pop way before ruin ever existed.
When I have a good match there is usually only 1 or 2 gens left by the time they are all sacrificed.
If they work together, power the gens, and escape, more power to them. Also games go by faster without it, so I can have more matches in my limited playtime.
BTW I advocate for Ruin AND toolboxes to be removed. Then the games would be more consistent time wise.

Plenty of killers use Ruin.
Plenty of killers use NOED.
Plenty of survivors use Inner Strength.
Plenty of survivors use Small Game.
Cleanse those totes. Checkmate.

I love to read that "Ruin is required" while there are people like Brother_Cope who constantly play the lowest tier killers like trapper, bubba or legion without ruin... on red ranks... on pc.... with a controller.
0 -
A: not everyone can do that, so your point of "ruin isnt needed at red ranks" is invalid.
B: Good luck too the average red rank player if they choose someone like Legion or Bubba and don't pick Ruin. Ruin is needed at red ranks because not every killer has gen pressure they can put down, like Legion or Wraith.

The idea's you say are pretty bad tbh. Most red ranked survivors can push through gens, even with Ruin up, so too only need 1 skill check and never get one again is just a bad idea.
Honestly the best thing too do is just learn how too hit skill checks, and simply push through it. Unless you have a perk like Small game or Detectives Hunch, you can spend 5-10 minutes trying too find it when you could be doing 2-3 gens in that time.

Only killer I don't run it is Nurse.
0 -
I run it because even if I have almost a perfect start to a match, I will lose 2-3 gens in 4 mins easy. with a great start. if they haven't DC'd already meaning I wont get my likely pip.
0 -
But it is possible. The thing is most people don't want to try, learn and adapt, they prefer to use ruin as a shortcut. There are lots of killers on red ranks running 4 game-stalling perks that can't apply pressure, can't close chases, can't play generic tiles, literally can't do anything, but they get carried to red ranks by their boring builds.

Let me start off by saying i run a 120 hz monitor (1,4/6 hdmi which only allows 120 hz) which is still 2x more than console players, so this should be no issue. As i said i hit perfects but not all, as anyone would.
The common argument i see here is most killers need more time to unlock their full potential and i agree with that, as i said i got michael myself and see that this could be very usefull for him. But back to the point of literally every killer running 1 perk just getting tiresome way too quick. I do agree that being able to cleanse a totem is a great feature but with 32 maps, do you feel like new survs want to learn 32 map totem spots just because ruin is in the game? no, they don't. I like seeing people get over their fear of genrushers (props to you MissGamer456) because this would make my entire dbd play session a whole lot better. I'm not playing the game at all for the last week simply because i know, the next killer is gonna run ruin again, just like every game, makes the game give you 0 enthusiasm to play it. Trust me i'd love to try and learn things like 72hrs his moonwalking and trying to learn how to outplay killers, but you usually get no time for this practising (practising fun things / outplaying killers not just getting more perfects) since you have to get looking for the totem (or push a gen and not get a perfect 30% of the time and take forever to clear it).
I'd love to see new hexes be added because the hex mechanic itself is perfect, ruin just isn't. And yes after reading all your posts i feel like killers have a whole lot of compensation for not running ruin, hence why i still find it weird why everyone and i mean EVERYONE runs it. And btw guys, not everyone is a red / purple rank, i have 30hrs in the game, especially not if the only dude you play is bill (just got him level 45 before i quit) so don't give me this bs about *it's irrelevant for red ranks* when a game would want to get new players in who haven't played so much to be a red/purple rank. I actually gave 2 solutions to the problem of Ruin as to how to change it (and i said 1 reason would be too op that being getting no further skill checks) whilst the other seems great for new players, making it so you only have to get 1 perfect ruin check and after that not getting new ruin checks would promote the fact of *learning to hit perfects* would it not? because if you can do 1 perfect when you really need to you "learn" it way faster than having to do 5-10 on 1 gen.

Just an inconvenience in general, you'll learn to outplay Ruin and once Killers learn they are getting gen rushed with Ruin, the perk won't be used.
0 -
It’s just bad as a killer it’s gone within 30 seconds as a survivor who can hit great skill checks consistently, it’s 5 minutes in and teammates are all dead still haven’t found ruin only 1 gen done rip

Ruin is a basic necessity. Sometimes the totem spawns are very unlucky but it's still a must-have perk

I had one match, ages ago, where they finished the gens, opened the exit gates and ruin was still standing...and they wanted my ruin soooooooo bad....Me being absolutey trashed refused to let them get ruin and ended up parking my wraith in front of my ruin 😂😂😂 they eventually exited the gates. At least I can say my ruin lasted the entire match🤘🤘🤘🤣🤣🤣...
