How much play time does the typical player need before they can get into red rank?
I mainly want to know for killer, because I know that with the right team Survivors can rank up stupid fast.

If you played the strongest builds in the game every time (Omegablink Nurse, Prayer/Ring Spirit) all the way from rank 20 to 1, double pipping each time (easy with these builds), at 10 minutes a game (generous estimate) it would take about 7 hours.
A typical, non OP build player would probably need about 21 hours of optimal play to get to rank 1 killer.

you're gonna play for a few months before you can hit red ranks.
honestly, i'd say you'll need somewhat around 300 to 400 hours of playtime to be able to hit high ranks. that may sound a lot now, though its actually not that much... with 300 hrs you still have much to learn (take it from me, i got 2.7k hrs and i am still learning the advanced strats).
in the end, 300 hrs should be enough to be able to hit red ranks, at least as survivor.
for killer it will probaply take longer, as the gameplay is harder.
but in the end, its all based on how fast of a learner you are. if you can pretty much copy paste all the tactics you see, you'll easily get there with less, though if it just takes forever for you to figure out how to do sthg correctly, it will probaply take longer.
here a little tipp from me:
in order to get better with one side, you will have to play the other side, to be able to understand how that side handles your tactics.
so if you cant deal with looping survivors, play survivor and learn how to loop and how you do it. and then when you play killer again remember how you would loop this area and then play accordingly and cut them off.

Sorry I didn't clarify, but I mean how much play time in total. (Like if I had a day of play time I'd be rank 19)

For me personally, I hit rank 1 for the first time about 70 hours in. That was before they made ranking harder though, so I'd probably say about 100 hours? From buying the game to rank 1.

Dang. I'm only rank 9 and I have 100 hours. (To be fair, a lot of the time was afk)

For sure, queues have gotten a lot longer since I started playing.

I have 220 hours on record, rank 16 survivor with one pip. Part of the reason was for nearly two months I went with the default graphics settings which meant frequent missed skill checks and laggy play. After I fixed my graphics settings to potato, I was able to hit 500 skill checks in around two-three weeks.
I play SWF with a rank 9 survivor, so I frequently face off against rank 12 or lower killers. Whilst I get that the SWF team is now based on the highest ranked member, neither my friend nor I used it so they could mess with a low rank Killer. The only cost to me is I rarely pip up or get a safety pip when I don't win the match (by winning I mean escaping)
I don't play killer, originally I was worried I might not have a strong enough connection and now I am afraid I would be presented with 16s or lower due to the huge number of new Killers at gray 20

I think the first time I reached red ranks was at 100 hours, too, so I think this is about right.

I think it depends on you. Some people get rank 1 with 100 hours and some cant even with 1000

Update for 2021:
I personally achieved red rank in 90hours total playtime.
Started playing in 2016-2017 then stopped with about 65 hours and now played for about a week.
So if you have some experience and watch tutorials and tips you should be able to achieve red rank.
