Take: Acting toxic towards stereotypically "toxic" characters only encourages them to be toxic back
It's not even a "hot take" because it only takes a complete moron not to understand this. I've been playing Steve Harrington lately because I like his character and his perk Second Wind. I've been trying to get him to Prestige 3 and I have been playing him with my Prestige 2 cosmetics since I don't like his regular clothes, though sometimes I will also equip Scoops Ahoy.
Lately there's been a ton of discussion about Steve Harrington mains being toxic (mostly thanks to Reddit) and as a result I've gone up against countless Killers who play like ######### because "they're playing Steve Harrington so they must be toxic!" Tunneling, camping, Mori-spamming; all with a good degree of salt in post-game chat before they see that I'm running Spine Chill, Second Wind, Diversion, and Lithe.
As a result of all these sweaty Killers and all the flame I've gotten for playing Steve I've stopped playing the way I enjoy and have started playing scummy in response. I've started running Second Wind and Diversion less to replace them with Adrenaline and Decisive Strike to deal with all the campers and tunnelers I've had to deal with. I usually don't pay attention to the offerings screen but now when I see a secret offering burnt by the Killer I dodge the lobby because I don't want to deal with more insta-Mori bullshit.
This goes two ways by the way. I've been experimenting with some Trapper builds and I've met countless Survivors who teabag and click flashlights at me all match and then call me names in post game chat. After those sorts of matches I really want to equip a Mori and top tier perks and just go ham on the next group of Survivors I meet. I don't since I've gotten used to Survivor bullshit after playing Killer for an extended period of time and know that if I don't like getting Moried then other people probably don't either. But it's really hard to resist the temptation when I always get that one ######### who spends the whole game trying to piss me off.
So in short: Not every Nea, Claudette, Feng, Meg, or Steve is toxic. Not every Spirit, Nurse, or Billy is a tryhard. Some people don't play this game because of tier list placements or because of the preconceived notion of their character's personality, but because they actually enjoy a character and want to have fun.
If you play toxic you'll make more toxic people and get more toxicity directed back at you. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy that does nothing but harm the game. Don't be toxic to people just because they play characters you don't like. In fact: don't be toxic in general. Just play the game and have fun. Or go play Civilization if someone playing a virtual character online makes you so tilted.

I really appreciate the attempt, but I fear we are caught in a cycle of despair by design.
This game is meant to pick at our ego and the cycle of revenge is endless.

As a Claudette main, oh yeah... tell me about it...
The joys of playing Claudette is the sheer "thrill" of being at least three times as likely to have someone lecture you in post-chat about how " No Claudette, you shouldn't do this," "OMG Claudette why did you do that," etc. It's as if some players are just conditioned to see Claudettes and tell them how to play.
And I can safely say it happens way more often as Claudette than when I play Meg or Dwight, or anyone else. I don't play Nea or Feng so maybe it's the same for the other toxic stereotypes. But no matter what, it's obnoxious, and you're right OP. After getting berated by some random for existing, it's hard to go into the next game with a non-toxic attitude.

I believe there is a lot of truth in this. Especially when both sides are given tools to enact their revenge in a manner that many would consider downright unfair.

I've been playing Scoops Ahoy Steve lately and have noticed I've been tunneled alot more. And when I say tunnelling, I mean full on tunnel vision and refusing to leave me alone even if there were multiple injured survivors in front of killer.
Buuut... It was after rank reset so that probably didn't help. Happened a bit with Nancy too 🤔

Its just Steve's. Everyone tunnels and camps me for being a Steve in particular and I've done multiple tests to see if that is correct and all have proved true

heres what you do
you win. GG EZ
they win. Says the person that can only win with SWF and his crutch perks. It’s fine though as long as it boosts your ego.

You can't "Dodge a Lobby" in offering screen. So you literally ruined the fun for 4 other people just because your salty. However, you complain about toxic killers?
Just a general tip by the way, "be the change YOU want to see In the world".

I feel your pain. I main Nea (always with pink hair and bright cosmetics) and scoops ahoy Steve. The only reason I play with them is because I like them the most and I like their outfits. That's all about it. I never tbag or flashlight click, most of the time I don't even take an item with me.
But still I get tunneled a lot when I play these characters. And I'm not even good in running the killers around for very long.
One time a Clown focused me so hard, hitted me with BT, downed me later, I used my DS and BL right after, others tried to help me but he only wanted to see me dead. He lost the game (everyone else escaped), just because he wanted me so bad. At the end chat I asked him why he did this. His answer was, that he hates toxic people and I am toxic because I play Nea.
Yes. For this man a simple skin, which the biggest noob on this planet can equip, was toxic and a reason to loose the game just to get me.
And it feels like a lot of killers think this way, which is pretty sad imo. I just want to have fun. I just use these characters because I like them. I just use these outfits because I like how they look. I'm not bragging or flashlight kicking because I damn well know how it feels from the killer perspective, since I play both roles.
I just wish some killers would not judge the skins I use, but look how I behave ingame and if I show them disrespect or not instead of just assuming.

I've been told to kill myself cause I like playing as Legion. No lie. The Legion hate is a meme at this point and I wish it would quit. I just like the lore and the feeling of chasing someone down to slash the heck outta them.
1 -
I'm not saying it's right or acceptable, but the issue is that 90% of the people running neon Nea are doing so because they want to be seen because they have that cocky attitude that killers hate.
I don't really understand the Steve hate because I haven't seen Steves act any differently to anyone else, but I'd assume most people have the same opinion because of dressing in bright blue.

The only time I've gone out of my way to kill a specific player was when they were running Object of Obsession and used it right at the start of the game. Which, of course, is essentially daring the killer to tunnel you all game. "You wish to die? So be it" was my thought process.
I don't even know which character they were playing as, I only know that they were playing a female wearing a dress.

OoO is instant camp/tunnel whenever i see it as a killer.

These toxic stereotypes are definetly annoying. I stopped playing bald Dwight and Nea because I see killers tend to be more aggressive towards those skins, while with my main Jake I rarely see this.
And yeah, toxicity calls toxicity. A simple concept yet many struggle to grasp it.
1 -
Yeah, same. I'm not entirely proud of it, but I really just want to discourage survivors from ever using it (Especially in SWF), and since they're constantly telling me where they are, it becomes much easier for me to make them regret it.

"Lately there's been a ton of discussion about Steve Harrington mains being toxic (mostly thanks to Reddit) and as a result..."
For starters, I really don't think you can read into a player's personality or mood, based on the character that they are playing. Someone might prefer a specific cosmetic, or play a survivor because they like the lore, or are a fan of the character's franchise, or prefer their breathing/injured sounds over other survivors.
I play Claudette because she was "the meta" when I started a year ago, and now she is where all my perks are stacked and I don't want to redo that progress from scratch on someone else. That's literally it, there's nothing more to it for me.
Second thing I want to point out is that places like Reddit and these forums are the extreme minority of the DBD player base. Just because someone reads into this stuff in the way you're describing on Reddit, it isn't going to result in some massive sea change for the player base's attitude. I think that a lot of people here think that these specific pockets of the community count for way, way more than they actually do.

Ironically, The Entity enjoys our misery and our anger as well.
1 -
Ash mains are ultimate memers, people sleep on that.
1 -
You'd think the Entity would have already taken over the world by now. Gamers alone would surely give it enough misery and anger to devour half the solar system.
1 -
More like the whole Multi-Verse tbh.
But besides that, its just poetic irony that some players are toxic, which causes more toxicity... and its all just a nice little show for The Entity... That's probably why it keeps getting more people... its oh so fun to watch!

A lot of killers avoid me when I wear darker outfits on Claudette but as soon as I wear a bright outfit everyone goes berserk.
1 -
Yes I get your point, I play both sides and in my experience the colorful dressed characters (Nea, Feng or even Meg) are the ones who disconnect on their first down. However I always play the game and I will see the if they are toxic or not. If they get too cocky, no mercy for them. But if they play normal, why should I tunnel them to death?
The most toxic people I encountered were actually mostly Davids.
I think this is something the killer should decide during the game and not in the lobby. At least this is what I do.
1 -
Well... what do you expect? I got told I am the reason the community is toxic for playing Feng.... it's kinda funny to be honest.
2 -
Yeah! And not all Bill mains run BT, so don’t be mad when I don’t cause I’m the only guy left to save you anyway. lol..
as Jules once said, “######### be cool! Ringo! Tell that ######### to be cool!”

As someone who plays a lot of Legion I can confirm.
If you're one of those people who still hates Legion in current year you're a clown at best and a complete joker at worse. I can understand that Mending constantly is boring but it's no worse than Plague making you permanently No Mither.
Wear dark / bloody cosmetics get dodged. Wear bright cosmetics get tunnelled.
I don't know what people want.

Getting tunneled because I wear bright clothes and getting dodged cause there dark? You people are so hard to please. That's like sweating my balls off because the killer is bad but being immersed cause there good.
