Is Anyone Else Disappointed With Withering Blight?

BlueFang
BlueFang Member Posts: 1,379

When I first got the game back in October 2018 the Withering blight was the first event I ever played. I have so many fond memories back than with how cool the maps looked, trying to manage my blight hooks along with hunting for survivors going after blights or generators. It was so fun and atmospheric

I would say Blight 2019 had been the event I was most looking forward to the entire year, I was so excited to have the maps mutated again and to finally have the game feel fresh and exciting again

Than they did the archives, there's no blights, no atmosphere, just a bunch of icons on a menu tied merely to mindless XP farming and a rift system with ridiculously luck dependent and unrewarding missions

Despite all my excitement for the game to feel fresh again, I find the blights this year have no effect. It's all about the same monotonous grind to get more stuff to avoid having to pay money for skins

The event feels hollow. What was an opportunity to make the game feel exciting again has been used to simply keep the status quo. XP Grinding for the sake of XP grinding, and to me I find myself

Disappointed

I've enjoyed the extra bp, but as an event in terms of atmosphere its been tame. Even the lobby screen just has like one or two obscure pumpkins in them.

I for one am very happy that this Blight exists instead of last years Blight.

Last years Blight was so killer sided it was obnoxious. It was awful being the only survivor trying to survive because the others where running around trying to suck the juice out of some flowers and getting killed while doing it, and no generators got done. At least now they can get their serum without slowing the game down to a sluggish crawl / not moving forward at all.

Good riddance to last years Blight.

Yeah you gotta admit the fact the skins were released about 2 weeks and a half before the event launched really, really, killed a lot of the excitement for me. Granted the event wasn't meant to be delayed by so long but even if had released on the planned day, much of the excitement had worn off for me by than

I've only played like a match or two since the event started, haven't even felt the interest to XP grind to unlock the Clown and Spirit. It's just in comparison to last year's blight, EVEN the Chinese New Year event this one just feels so lame

I wanted the game to be different to have new objectives and goals. Not just mindless XP grind or hilariously luck stacked challenges designed to force players to spend the auric cells they get in the rift to progress

Which honestly is a really super dumb mechanic no one ever asked for

I’m really disappointed by the event, if you can even call it that. I agree that while the plants from last year were a really cool concept, but terrible in practice due to survivors effectively competing with each other never mind the killer, at least it felt like an event. This year it just feels lazily thrown out with the rift. They also reduced the BP earned compared to previous “events” of this type for some reason. That’s not even including the fact that on PS4, at least when I last played, the event generators didn’t even give you the extra points they supposedly are meant to give you.

I had thought about buying the premium rift, though the archive challenges made it an absolute turn off given I don’t devote every minute of my free time to finding games never mind playing them with a large amount of luck dependent challenges. With a bunch of new games coming out soon too, I’d rather spend time on those than grinding out a losing battle. Not saying I’m quitting, just saying that for something that is meant to include casual players, it doesn’t feel very inclusive.

I was really disappointed as well. Hollowed Blight was way better than this; we actually had some incentive to stop pumping out gens and do something else that rewarded you with a lot of bp and serum. Now it's like "grind the battle pass lol". The offerings aren't even worth using and the atmosphere is not there anymore. While I'm grateful for being able to get serum after the event that doesn't change how disappointed I am.

It seems odd that this Halloween event has been tied to the 70 day long archive/rift thing. Especially since they pretty much missed October, so it's a weird Thanksgiving/Christmas event now? Are the gen/hook bonus things going to be around that entire time? Also, putting the event rewards in the rift while making the in-game event objects act only as BP bonuses was an odd decision and makes me wonder if this is going to be the standard event reward system going forward from now.

    Extra bloodpoints are never disappointing.

I wish they would decorate the shack for events honestly. The grind wouldn't be so bad if we just had a better atmosphere in the trials that made it feel like Halloween.

Give us more Blood points! 3000 is not enough to justify taking the offering over an escape cake or pudding. Come on devs

I am. This "event" was very rushed. It's basically Moonrise 0.5. They should've brought back the Pustula Plants from last year and just made some changes to prevent Survivors from getting their nectar and then killing themselves instead of just giving us event gens.

    1. The hooks last year seemed brighter and had more nectar on them. They took off some of the nectar for this year's hooks.
    2. The gens just have a couple of pumpkins thrown on them. That's all. They should start spitting out nectar as the gen nears completion.
    3. The Serums being exclusive to the Rift is a horrible idea. You should be able to get them from the event gens/hooks, with the Rift being a secondary option if you just want to blow your money on it.
    4. The Pustula Plants aren't very appealing because you don't get the Serum from it. It seems like you need at least three for them to look decent. I shouldn't want to run a Cake, Pudding, or BPS over an event exclusive offering.

Yeah I mean I can't blame them too much about the timing because things happen and it was beyond their control but still

I mean even the Chinese new year event had more atmosphere and fresh gameplay put into it than the entirety of the withering blight event

It's like the developers heard we loved events but instead of refining the blight event and improving upon the issues people had with it

They literally scrap the E N T I R E event in favor of giving us M O R E things to grind for in a game that is still very much a hamster wheel of RNG and meta perks

Hallowed blight 2018 was just full of farming teams who had no interest in actually playing the game. Theyd collect their serum and often find the killer to suicide.

Overall I have played more the last 2 weeks than I have for a while:

The double BP weekend, the Halloween items, the rift, the tome, the pustula petals.

Ive quite enjoyed it to be honest although I miss milking my cankers and I agree the Halloween aspect feels a bit half baked.

Because the other BP offerings are generally worth more of a bonus

    Yes.

I get this was a huge update for BHVR with the archives and rift.... the event tho just seems like an afterthought.

    ↑This.

The second the developers put the Serums inside their Battle Pass, it stopped being an "event".

If you remember, last year's hooks had a bit of a visual feedback animation on them - they were bright with serum to start with, and then when you hooked someone the plants withered. This year's hooks appear to be just the post-hook "withered" models from last year. I suppose it's meant to be a part of the "Withered Blight" lore or something, but in the context of everything that's been going on recently it just comes across as very lazy and poorly thought-out.

  • Mellow7
    Mellow7 Member Posts: 793

They wanted people to spend money on them that's why, why do you think event "exclusives" aren't a thing anymore because they wanna cash in on them. Event skins aren't special anymore when anyone can just buy them. Imagine if they started selling legacy skins.

  • twistedmonkey
    twistedmonkey Member Posts: 4,296

Yeah it doesnt feel like an event as taking part in it doesn't have a purpose, it's just 3k points for each hook or gen. I don't class it as a real event and It would have been better just to have a week of dbp's instead.

The cost of the offerings isn't worth the purchase and it seems you normally just end up getting back the cost or at an extra 3k most times.

I think the most dissapointing part of why it doesn't feel like an event is the serum being tied to the rift. While I am grateful to have the opportunity to earn the skins it just feels way too grindy. I preferred the past events where you earned them within the time frame.

Event skins imo should be obtainable through a bit more than average play. I don't mind grinding more in an event but when it's liking like it may be December before I can get a Halloween event skin I lost all interest in participating.

I stopped playing after the dbp and decided to take a break for a while. I haven't enjoyed playing nearly as much since the challenges were released. Relying on others as a solo player was always hit or miss but now they have a challenge to distract them even more.

You’re 100% right in saying that it comes across as very lazy and poorly thought-out. If the devs were going for a withering effect, then they shouldn’t have stopped at the hooks The pumpkins on the gens and menu screen could be falling apart with nectar oozing from them. Maybe add a couple of smaller Pustula Plants that are dead or dying. After you repair that gen or use the hook, the plants start trying to come back but they fail. The event gens should also have nectar oozing from them after being completed. Make it look like things are starting to not work properly or die off.

There's not enough petal offerings in the bloodweb, and you still don't get bonus points for completing a pumpkin gen or using an event hook without that offering. Not exciting.

I don't get excited for DBD's events for obvious reasons

They are all in essence the same, a special hook and generator you can do for more BP and/or whatever event points.

Bland and boring, but hey, no one wants new stuff in this community, because if they did do something less bland, everyone would through a hissy fit .

    It's kind of a problem

I don't mind how they did it this time because with the challenges people are trying to complete, I think it would be a big mess. I think people would play a lot more selfish and there'd be more complaints than what we have about the event now.

So, I cant remember when exactly I got the game, I only play it casually and for events if they peak my interest.

I remember some event where the community as a whole had goals to achieve, to unlock skins, do they still do those?

  • johnmwarner
    johnmwarner Member Posts: 3,793

You do get 1000 extra even if you don’t use the offering, but 3000 if you do plus extra gens are special. If all 4 survivors and the killer use the pestuls and your team does all 5 special gens you’re looking at 15k bonus... that’s a lot of IFS... I would rather just use a green offering for 100% extra altruism and get the 8k within my own control

  • Zanely89
    Zanely89 Member Posts: 134

This year's withering blight is bad, I often forget there is an event going on and forget to put on petal into the games.

There is just nothing that scream Halloween, minimal changes on map, no splash screen, no intro no everything.

So many time I play the game normally until I see a pumpkin gen and goes "oh, right, Halloween event is going on now." Even the hook don't really have much going on unlike last year.

You know I agree, I didn't really see the first withering blight but it's not like you gen a massive bonus from the blighted things, there isn't any point of doing 'blighted' gens and 'blighted' hooks, good question and opinion

  • NeonAlien
    NeonAlien Member Posts: 328

Ohh ok I didn't realize the 1000 Bonus points without an offering, Thanks. Still.. There's not enough offerings in the Web considering that if you burn an offering, there's a chance you don't get a special gen finished at all, making it more costly to get to the next offering in the web than just ignoring it alltogether.

  • johnmwarner
    johnmwarner Member Posts: 3,793

Right, the other thing is as a surviving you aren’t sure how “worth it,” it is to use a pestul unless you know if your team is using them too and when I ask half the time mike answers so I don’t use one. Then I see 3 others used and I’m like #########

Last one of these community challenges was Howling Grounds (February 2018), I think. Before we had Fall Masquerade (September 2017), Blood Feast (August 2017) and 1st Anniversary (June 2017).

Honestly it would be so fun if once they roll in dedicated servers and fix them every few months or so they roll out a temporary "experimental mode" that players can queue up for alongside normal DBD

If the community likes it they can add it to the game

  • Skaraok
    Skaraok Member Posts: 37

The sad part is, you will get more points from a Bloody Party Streamer then you'll get from burning a Pustula, and that's assuming you can actually do the hook/gen in the match.

    Utterly shameful.

It's only 2k extra points for burning an offering.. your better off with escape cake or PBS tbh...

It does feel as tho they just threw something together.. considering Halloween is the biggest holiday for a game like DBD you think they would've done more.. I thought as of last years event they even had a dedicated event team...

Also they even skipped the usual summer event so that they could work on this event and the rift... I'm not to impressed... :(
