ANOTHER Japanese killer.
Is anyone a bit let down by the fact that we're seeing ANOTHER killer based on (some form of) Japanese lore?
There are so many countries with rich and deep folklore, so many unexplored horror icons, and yet we're doubling up on Japan.
Yes, we get it, there's a significant group of people that have an inexplicable obsession with Japan that will throw money at anything that almost mentions it, but to people who aren't this is a pretty lackluster reveal.

Not at all.

I'm kind of half/half
On one sides my interest in the Japanese culture is being fed AND as a writer I am excited to see story progression and call backs to earlier entries.
On the other side I am kind of disappointed that we aren't getting something new, it is new but also not. I was hoping for the Alchemist and to continue his story.
14 -
and?
we also have like 14 american killers, i dont see the problem.

The Alchemist would be great, I'm half expecting him to release around September/October next year though because his lore has been explored twice now at Halloween.
It's gonna be another Christmastime release so I'm always hoping for something like a Krampus.
I get that there are people who like this stuff, but they got their killer in Spirit. As someone who has no obsession with that stuff this just comes off as more of the same. Hell, he's even already stolen a really similar weapon.

Huntress is Russian, Plague is Babylonian, Wraith is African, Doctor is at least based loosely in Chinese lore. So even including some of the biggest licensed horror icons in the world, that only leaves you with 12 at most.
5 -
Every country in the world belongs to America, so every Killer is American.
OH SAY CAN YOU SEEEEEEEE
15 -
I'm more interested in the lore. What the new killer is and how it's connected to Spirit (maybe even the survivor is somehow connected).
0 -
I'm not concerned with the killers background. As long as the lore, perks and design is good then I'm good.

ANOTHER whining forum member.

Instead of a killer with a connection to previous killer, I would of much rather had a totally original killer naturally.
4 -
Got curious and checked the wiki, it's 10 to be exact.
Demo is an alien, Legion is Canadian (Counting as either 1 or four entries in this list, depending on how you look at it) Plague is Babylonian, Spirit is Japanese, Huntress is Russian, and both Hag and Wraith are native African. Wraith moved to America for a bit before he was taken, but apparently he still considered himself more culturally African at the time, since his designation is distinctly different from Doctor's African American.
Of particular note is that every licensed killer besides Demo is American; If narrowed down to characters DBD can decide the nationality of it's 7-10 non-American (The specific number here depends on how much you think Legion counts and whether category Original-Character-Bloastface counts as licensed) and 5-6 American (With Ghostface once more being a variable)

Not at all. I am very happy that and old chapter is getting some love (assuming that this new killer has something to do with Spirit's lore).
I am sure the devs have ideas for killers from other countries. They have a diverse cast of characters and I am sure they are not going to stop giving us characters from different countries/ franchises.
To be fair, a majority of the killers are North American based. It is nice if another country gets to double down ^^ why not Japan?

I'm still waiting on an Aztec Warrior. I'd like to see my ancestry in the fog too :)

While it's true that in terms of horror legends and folklore there are many countries which stand as valid alternatives, Japan is very much the reigning king of cinematic horror, and has been for decades. GIven that Dead By Daylight has always been heavily inspired by the ~horror movie experience~, I don't mind them paying homage to that by putting a bit more of a focus on Japanese horror.
As long as whoever the new killer is is sufficiently different, visually and power-wise, from the Spirit, I don't really have any problems with it.

Aztec killer would be awesome, but I'm still waiting on a victorian British aristocrat to be a killer because crumpets and tea. Although I'm not sure if any of the killers are already british.
Although the Aztec killer was way more potential for the power and we need more two handed weapons in the game.
Anyways I hope you had a great birthday :)

Do the multiple American killers bother you at all?
I like the idea of enriching the lore of an already established chapter and building on it.
0 -
Don't see a problem with it. Like many said, the majority of the game cast is North American, or heavily US based. Even characters with different nationalities like Wraith or Nea have an American centric lore, because they ar immigriants and most of their known Lore happens there.
So having two Japanese ones isn't a problem for me.
4 -
that would still be 12 out of 16 though, a vast majority.
tbh, i didnt really look up the killers. glad you came up with the actual number ^^
though i have to admit i did count Wraith as an American killer, as, even if he wasnt born in America, he still spent a lot of his time there and only started killing after discovering what A. Azarov has done, which was in America. so i kinda counted him, since he as a killer only was active in America.
also Doc is said to be African - American.

I got fed so much lol Thanks for the love!
But I had an idea for a killer that utilized the Ravens that you might like to learn about...
Meet The Ravenmaster

- Demo is an alien, but his backstory of a secret government lab is very much American.
- Legion is Canadian, but realistically it might as well be American (dont shoot me, Americans, pls, with your legalised weapons). Their background isnt particularly Canadian, or more like Canadian background doesnt make them different from American background.
- Wraith is African, but, again, its a mafia backstory. American as well. You might be able to change his nationality to anything else and it will still make sense.
- Doctor may be based on Chinese stuff (though this doesnt count, because its not represented AT ALL), and he may have African roots, but still American.
So, leaving those aside and licensed Killers as well (despite me including Demo on the list above - I just wanted to comment on it): Huntress (Russian), Hag (African-ish? Still have my doubts about her), Spirit (Japanese) and Plague (Babylonian) are the only Killers without an American backstory.
Considering Japanese is the second biggest horror theme after American, it makes sense we have more than one Japanese Killer. Hell, when Spirit got released, we were begging for it.

Hag's African American I'm pretty sure. The imagery of Paddlesteamers in the swamp is much closer to Louisiana where they were popular. Her name is also "Lisa Sherwood" which isn't a particularly common African name, if I'd wager a guess.

@FluorescentLemon ur delusional my killer main brother
3 -
Freaking guy that think he's cool cuz he is patriot. bruh

as ive said above, i didnt look it up 14 was just out of my head.
though, we can say for sure that Trapper, Billy, Nurse, Myers, Doctor, Bubba, Freddy, Pig, Clown, Legion (yes, Canada is a part of the American continent, so he is american - he counts as 1 killer tho) and Ghostface (11 killers in total)
the killers we know for sure are not american killers would be: Huntress (russian), Hag (african), Spirit (japanese) and Plague (babylonian) (4 killers in total)
now, regarding Wraith and Demogorgon:
yes, you are correct, they both didnt originally come from America, though both killers have started killing there. Wraith was a peaceful person until he met A. Azarov who made him snap and kill - which is why i considered him to be american, as was "born as a killer" in that country.
for Demogorgon, since he only really showed up in America and was killing over there, i too count him as an American Killer. Though, we cant really call him a "Killer" at all, as he is just a hungry little fella. he's such a good boi :3
so yeah, those two would be up for debate. feel free to not include them in your list.
that would still leave us with 11 American and 6 not American killers, which basically leaves us with 2/3 of the killers being American, which tbh isnt really counteractive towards my argument.

What about the fact that half or more are Americans? Very rich folklore
0 -
Does this mean we can get Hoffman to go with Amanda uwu
0 -
The discussion on the killers’ nationalities is decidedly unfair to Demogorgon. One person even called him an alien! The nerve!
To set the record straight, he is Upside-Downian! Seriously people, watch how you speak or we're all gonna start thinking you’re a bunch of Upside-Downists!
(sarcasm. Enjoy! 😏)

@PigNRun Thing is America and Canada arent that culturally different so its not surprising his Canadian background doesnt make him different from an American background. Side note, i pity Canadians somewhat since they, for the most part, are overshadowed by America on the world stage.
As for the topic i dont mind a Japanese killer (or survivor if it turns out the dad is a survivor) i just kind of wished they didnt go back to the same well and wouldve rather them move onto a completely different killer/arc.

Nope.

As long as he's a demon/oni/ogre I'm fine if he's Japanese.
0 -
I think it’s time for Leprechaun!

I know man what the hell is BHVR getting took over we have TWO whole Japanese killers out of 18 (after it is added) that's like a million percent!!! Can't believe this 😡😡😡 like how dare they try to add on to previous lore! That's so stupid, they should only add anything that's new that we've never heard of before. If they connect it to previous lore they're just being uncreative cuz they can't come up with something new! And if the killers are related in lore then their powers must be the exact same! There's no way they could make two related killers that have a different power, that's just absurd!!!1111!!

I'm just happy it isn't a licensed killer so I can get it free.

That is perfect, how do you always have some of the best ideas?
0 -
Not really, I am pretty happy
0 -
You're really mad we're getting more asian culture just because its asian- literally almost no horror game empathizes on asian themes so its somethin new
0 -
No issues with Asian.
Could be Chinese, Mongolian, give me a murderous Hindu goddess. The point is there's so many countries, and we get the same Japanese noise that EVERY OTHER GAME shoves in.

Oh okie I read it wrong sorry. But im on board for a chinese killer.

Where's my native heritage killer! Let me call to the spirits of those who walked before me and summon the creatures of the land, to stomp the hell out of baby Dweet's at rank reset

Hag is definitely American (African-American). I'm really not sure why everyone is like 'huh yeah, dreads, I guess she can't be from America'. The swamp locations are clearly based on the American South (unless 'the pale rose' really got thrown off course by that storm) and her name (Lisa Sherwood) is a western name. Again, really unclear why this is such a blindspot when people are happy to debate the degree to which Canada is culturally different from the US over multiple posts.

Canadian killer = oh excuse me survivors am I in your way? Oh pardon me, just going to open this gate for you eh! Four man escape nice, good job survivors.

I don't care where they're from as long as;
- They look thematically fitting to their concept.
- Their power isn't a gimmick, aka, it actually helps with chases.
0 -
I mean that's pretty accurate with the current state of Feral Frenzy.

Sorry :/

Not upset if it's another Japanese killer, as I enjoy having a varied ethnic palette in the game. I'll just be worried it won't be as "original" as we've come to expect and that it may show signs of a weakening creative team.
Claudette or the Trapper didn't need an additional character to further their story, as evidenced by this Tome. Spirit has a rich and full story and I don't see a need for another character directly tied to her.
I think we can all get on board that it's either an Oni brought forth via her death or her father, likely as a Samurai. Neither of which interest me personally whatsoever. Oni will be naturally represented, most likely, as either a demon, ogre, or combination of the two. I can't help but feel the Demon as a killer has such a wide and various background of archetypes to draw from that it didn't need to be one tied to an already used cultural focus. And if it's more along the Ogre line, I'd be more pleased with its northern European type, for the same reasoning as I gave for the Demon: Originality (or rather the lack thereof). Samurai could be pretty cool, but again, it's just yet another character archetype from Rin's already established bloodline story and another basic cultural icon.
Yes, there are plenty of American killers, but they tend to be varied enough that they didn't necessitate tying them to each other in order to fully flesh them out. Neither of these options will have that originality.
But, as always, all of this is just assumption until we know more. Mechanics will be the major factor in evaluating the killer's worth, really; I just won't be thrilled if we're correct in our guessing and likely won't leap at obtaining it without some crazy perks and/or fun and efficient gameplay mechanics. I'm hoping they fool us and give us something fresh and original and not just a leech character hanging off Rin's butt (which I'd totally volunteer for tribute). Time will tell.

Is just happy they are not bringing another licensed killer for now, we need a break from them as it's good to see what the devs come up with themselves.
1 -
Because it's tried and true.

Why do you keep saying anyone who likes Japanese history/folklore is obsessed? I mean, I think Japanese folklore is cool but I’m not obsessed
0 -
i'm waiting for a british killer maybe some jack the ripper like killer

Uwuu comeon fuys. Cant be bad to have something based on traditional japanese folklore. Not like daddy rin or oni will walk around in school uniforms and challenge nea to card battles.
Atleast it cant get as bad as WorldofWarcraft's Viking-boner.
