About dead by daylights toxic and douchebaggy community you guys aren't that bad. The amount of hate i get on a regular is about 18x's less than the hate i get in league and the amount of team killing is almost non-existent compared to rb6 and for honor.
whether it's because the community is small, the game design choices are promoting good gameplay, or there just aren't that many jerks here is actually pretty cool. please dont let me down in the future.

DbD is known as pretty toxic, because it was a bully simulator for a long time.
LoL, Overwatch and RB6 are way more toxic imo, that's one reason why i stopped playing all of them.

A little in moderation is fine, too much is a no-no.

Larger, competitive games like the ones you listed above do tend to have a higher level of "toxicity" simply because of the sheer size of their communities. That, and the fact that at least two of them are actual esports so people tend to take them a lot more seriously, especially in ranked play.
It's possible that the DBD community has a higher proportion of "toxic" players considering its relatively small size, but that is mainly because of the way the game is set up. Two opposing roles, with very different playstyles, meaning that most people favour one or the other. So there's a lot of "us versus them" going around. Also, because the roles are balanced individually and compete with one another, a buff to one is an indirect nerf to the other and vice-versa, which is why everyone gets so defensive and up-in-arms every time a change is made or even suggested.
People everywhere are jerks, but the game itself naturally doesn't do a lot to promote a wholesome and unified atmosphere.

What I like about DbD is the fact that you only really have the post lobby chat to communicate with "the other side" and if they get insulting or you don't want to take it anymore in any way, you can just leave. Of course this action takes a little bit of self control since you need to be able to tell yourself a discussion wouldn't be worth it. Also, rounds are short so you "only" waste 15ish minutes on a round that sucked, compared to the 40+ minutes a regular LoL game takes.
In regard to the last sentence, you are right, it is the premise of this game since it is an uneven-sided game based on murder, so it needs a dark setting; and some people are mean just for the sake of it.

DbD has the most toxic community of non-esports games I know. It's one of the major reasons why I hesitate to recommend this game to other people.
Additionally, a lot of mechanics could be changed to lessen the amount of toxicity.

Really though, while there are plenty of toxic douchebags who feel the need to repeatedly harass other people, there are also quite a few very nice people.
Maybe it's just me, but this and F13 are the only games where I've become friends with players on the opposing team.

This topic is particularly interesting to me because I’ve got two different viewpoints from this in my household.
I played LoL for a few years, so I’ve gotten used to large amounts of salt and the like thrown my way, especially since jungle and support were my two favorite roles (aka the most common targets for “it’s YOUR fault I’m doing bad!” comments.). DbD is definitely nowhere near as toxic as LoL...I can count on one hand the number of times someone has said something in DbD that genuinely got to me, League players were vicious by comparison.
My wife on the other hand did not ever play LoL. She did play Overwatch for a while but never competitive, so she didn’t have much toxicity, relatively. It’s relatively easy to get to her in postgame chat or clearly taunting toxic behavior in game, and I don’t think it’s because she’s thin skinned, but rather she just doesn’t have the experience dealing with it that I do. It really does make a difference having the experience with it. As is I need to remind her she can close off the chat for a few games if she needs, or that it’s probably time to take a break.
The community isn’t as bad as people call it out to be, but it certainly isn’t a fountain of rainbows either. Certainly not my gold standard for good communities, but also not the worst I’ve been in.

I find a vast majority of people I go against are usually pretty nice after the match. I'm on Xbox so we don't get a post-game chat, but when I do get messages, it's usually GG and praising me on how I played. Of course, you do get the occasional toxic message about how I cheated or abused X perk to win, but those same people are the ones who like to taunt and gloat about how they dropped a pallet on me, then proceeded to mess up and be downed. Overall, the community on this game isn't too bad, but I guess that's because I prefer to stay in the mid-ranks to avoid it

DBD is toxic to the core... the community is better at hiding it is the only difference.
On R6S they can atleast make changes to the game without people threatening to boycott it just as an example.
People have invested too much into DBD to give it up but devs hold back.

been here (owned the game) for 3 years. worst thing i've ever had to deal with is someone calling my playstyle cheap or someone quitting early because they got upset. There used to be glitches to make games never ending and so on, but all of those issues get addressed when they come up and as someone above said matches are complete around 15 minutes. you can't insult your opponent through the game other than on pc and interactions are minimal between survivors and killers other than for objective purposes. worst thing people can do to taunt is finger point, butt dance, or hook slap. and to be quite honest that's fine.

Sorry there’s tonnes of smokes and mirrors... Some killers want to bully solos, SWFs want to bully Killers... people who are solid at solo-play or with M1 killers are forcefully cemented a better status/skill level by the formers and get shot down in discussions as being impolite rather than fairly critical for being through the worst.
dev’s can’t be bothered to fix the cycle which would be admitting that the bottom suffers and have a better idea on the solutions...
the dev’s try to please everyone and that’s the problem... you can’t please bullying (rather than competition where the balance is equal) without keeping bullying. Sad fact is there are salty people when they lose in this community and rather it remained imbalanced.
Then there’s people pretending they’re at equal to people playing on hardcore mode but either are very naive or trolling because they only play in the easy positions.
I remember when bubba was difficult but viable... swf players wanted him nerfed (Emblem system) because he could actually make a competitive game exist. People would be like “huur duur” you’re trolling as literal trolls even to this day... burning through old ds/bt, infinite sprint burst and other crutches was extremely difficult at the time.

To sum the dark side of this community up, people have a bully complex on both killer and survivor whether it’s aggressive or passive-aggressive or there’s a trolling to the point that every mechanic has a harm (that makes the game exist) that doesn’t allow the player to necessarily benefit from. Basically a lot of players with a low mental age, takes things too seriously thus strives for blatant imbalances rather than working on their own where they blindly hate people they don’t know/come across.

the bully complex would be a societal issue and not a community issue.
community issues would be things like teamkilling, rage quitting, afking, harassment, boosting, disingenuous developer community relations, swatting, server hijacking, biased board censorship, stalking, impersonation, theft, phishing, modding, botting, trolling, third party advertising, win trading, and so on. things that would relate to a game community. things that cant be directly tied to gameplay or the creation of the game itself would be more societal or political based.

It’s the way the devs balance to allow it... they could prevent it but people in the community retaliate... it’s definitely a community issue or the devs would have fixed the problems with solo-swf gap and buffed weaker killers up. People in the community would rather the game be bully-based rather than competitive based. It’s not even casual... casual has a competitiveness to a core it’s just that players aren’t expected to take the game seriously - i.e. a lack of ranking system/stats etc.

Also if there are ways to change societal issues... it’s easier done through games/media than other methods sometimes... politics can get too heated... media outlets can develop bad names... games can change outlooks with a bit more advantage too them as they’re 3D and you can move around like say compared to a film... devs can be a positive force or scurry around the negative force. Long term - the positive force helps the devs... just look at Death Garden which was 1-sided both times... now devs have a playerbase that think they have the power to boycott and if the devs tried to make a positive outcome then general decent behaviour just vibrates around... trying to summaries the positives such as etiquette is hard but if you’ve read history you can see major quality of life changes in the world when people had positive reforms... which normally started from artists. People who don’t change remain miserable till they do, - if they do anyway and in the moment only pursue trying to make other people miserable believing it’ll be a solution then never is.

This is how I see the relationship between killer and survivor. Off the clock, friendly. As long as you don't message me hate, good times all around. I will go out of my way to thank survivors who drop bloody streamers and maybe offer some sort of self deprecating joke if the game was eventful. But while playing....oh my (deity of your choice), I friggin hate survivors! Every last one are cowardly, obnoxious, showboating jerks that deserve what they get (and what they deserve is a hook through the chest and lord help me I love giving it to them). The thing is, I actually enjoy hating them. This game wouldn't be nearly as fun if the survivors were bots. Just knowing that every chainsaw to the chest I doll out causes some survivor somewhere to swear at their t.v. and toss their controller in rage, well, it brings pure joy to my heart. I'm sure that if survivors had hearts they would feel the same way.
So maybe the community is a bit toxic, but toxic in a good way....mostly.

Well glad to know I was correct in my assumption about the personality of those who play killer because they find it more fun (which it should be but isn't to most people).

for a couple of reasons. 1 is to gloat - which is fine. there's nothing wrong with bragging and competitive banter. the problem starts when harassment and abuse are mistaken for competitive banter. another is to squeeze out as much bloodpoints as possible. and another still is to make sure all 4 survivors are in the gate. Of course if you have a killer that's failing so hard they just want to leave and find a new match there is the "abort match" function where you open the gate. The whole point of a match is to earn bloodpoints and the devs have made sure to put in ways for the game to eventually end (assuming you don't get body blocked into a corner and can't move while the killer looks at you menacingly or the survivors don't run off the map and refuse to do gens). if the game works as intended where the killer tries to hit survivors and survivors try to do gens the game will eventually end. regardless of which side wants to squeeze out bloodpoints by dragging the game on.
is it toxic to be greedy? is it toxic to be arrogant? is it toxic to be caring? nah.
those things suck when you're the killer and youre losing, but i'd argue that what is toxic is refusing to play the game or preventing others from playing the game. There's nothing wrong with winning or losing by the rules of the game and as long as behavior keeps fixing bugs that prevent game completion then those things you mentioned about survivors butt dancing in the gate is hardly toxic.
what is toxic is when you get messages back to back to back to back about how much you suck or should end your own life and never play the game again. that's harassment and verbal/written abuse. Losing sucks. Losing constantly sucks even more. That's not the butt dancing. That's not just waiting in the gate.
I'd argue that losing back to back to back and then getting upset at people winning or bragging about their own abilities is more toxic than the person bragging about winning.
but once again this is all contextual. bottom line is if you're losing that much you probably need to read the game guide because there is obviously something wrong with your approach and there's no need to be upset at people waiting for you in the gate or face camping to ensure at least 1 person dies. even if a killer face camps should 3 people run over with the right perks there's nothing the killer can do if he's not prepared. decisive strike, breakdown, borrowed time, deliverance, slippery meat, up the ante, etc. there are tons of perks to prevent face camping success. and in that same vein there are tons to prevent hatch camping, gate baiting, and so on.

At least in LoL,r6 and Overwatch I get insulted with original stuff unlike DBD where the insults honestly just get old super fast. :< But yeah the community isn't as salty as people make it out to be.

the reason why you thought I was referring to "you" directly is BECAUSE you didn't read all of my post. I would prefer it if you didn't respond to something you're not going to read. it's the equivalent of cutting someone off mid sentence and is lazy as well as disrespectful and assuming. at that point you're only confusing other readers and derailing the discussion.
here's a wikipedia page that explains "generic you" since you hate reading large posts. To put it simply? I hate using the word "one" to refer to a non-distinct person. I feel like I'm roleplaying a sage from some kind of B reel fight scene movie. "you" is what I grew up with and continue to use since it fulfills both roles adequately.
as for what I actually said? Here's a hierarchy of toxic behavior.
One who harasses others is more toxic than
One who ruins the game is more toxic than
One who gets upset when they lose is more toxic than
One who gloats about winning.
