An addon to allow Freddy players to play as old Freddy
TL;DR for those who don't want to read my ranting:
- New Freddy is great
- Old Freddy was also great, even if he wasn't as strong
- Old Freddy's power was a lot more in-depth than people thought
- Old Freddy encouraged players to avoid camping and tunnelling
- Reworking Old Freddy's power was unfair on the people who spent time and effort learning him, although I don't blame BHVR for doing so
- Changing Kid's Drawing (which is currently Freddy's version of Speed Limiter) to allow players to take on the role of old Freddy is the perfect compromise; people who love new Freddy can play him, and people who loved old Freddy can play him
- Or you could literally just copy-and-paste old Freddy in as a Killer alongside new Freddy. I don't think anyone would mind seeing two Freddies in the Killer Select screen.
- Old Freddy wasn't overpowered by any sense of the word.
- Now, onto the text walls!
Okay, first, I love new Freddy. I think he is much better in terms of strength than he used to be - I don't think old Freddy was the weakest Killer in the game, but I 100% agree that new Freddy is stronger. Possibly even top tier, with the right build. As of this post, new Freddy is my current main.
But I loved old Freddy as well, even if he wasn't as strong. I and quite a few other people I know of (I could name two off the top of my head) had spent many hours learning the ins-and-outs of old Freddy's power, and please believe me when I say it was much more than "hit M2 to be a basic M1 killer."
For example, did you know that old Freddy's flickering during the Dream Transition actually happened at set times? Here's a table of when he was visible and invisible:
0:00 seconds Invisible
0:33 seconds Visible
2:00 seconds Invisible
3:33 seconds Visible
5:00 seconds Invisible
6:40 seconds Visible
7:10 seconds Real
(So the infamous 7 seconds were actually 7:10 seconds. Blasphemy!) For nostalgia's sake, if you want to learn more about old Freddy, here is a guide written by How's It Hanging (a top tier old Freddy main), Maximus (a good old Freddy player) and Croquedead (who is actually a Hag main, but shhh!)
I know that a lot of old Freddies used to tunnel like HELL. Because everyone believed he was the weakest Killer in the game, most Freddies thought they needed to tunnel to secure a kill - and frankly, this is why everyone thought he was weak. But in actuality, the best way of playing Freddy was literally anti-tunnelling. You wanted to put as many people to sleep as possible, and constantly switch targets to keep everyone guessing. Old Freddy also couldn't camp very well, so by the very nature of his power, Freddy had trouble doing the two things survivors hate most - camping and tunnelling.
(Also, since DS's rework - something I must also commend BHVR on - tunnelling is far less effective than during old Freddy's time.)
Now, I know that new Freddy also has a lot of nuance to his power. The snares are pretty cut-and-dry, but his teleport allows you to come at survivors from angles they'd never expect - I particularly love watching Otzdarva do this, and if anyone here also watches Otz, you'll know what I mean.
But I think that completely reworking a Killer's power, like in the case with Freddy, is a little unfair to the ones who took the time and effort to learn a Killer that everyone said was for masochists. Therefore, I want to propose a solution that can accommodate people who like new Freddy and old Freddy.
Change the Kid's Drawing addon (which grants extra BP at the cost of making snares almost useless) to an addon allowing players to take on the role of old Freddy. This addon would trump other addons, so you'd run it alone.
This would make it so that old Freddy mains wouldn't have to go through bloodweb after bloodweb in order to play their favourite Killer again, while also costing new Freddy mains absolutely nothing - the addon I picked was picked specifically because of its uselessness. Seriously. It's Speed Limiter Freddy. Nobody will miss Speed Limiter Freddy.
You could also just copy and paste old Freddy's data into the game next to new Freddy. I don't think people would care if there were two Freddies available to play. Hell, you could just name the old Freddy "The Old Nightmare" and the current Freddy "The Nightmare". Then you could have the full range of old Freddy's addons as well, I suppose, although I'd personally be content just being able to play old Freddy again. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, man, I tell you.
From a balance standpoint, I don't think there's a lot to talk about. I doubt anyone's going to seriously tell me old Freddy was overpowered.
To summarise, reworking Kid's Drawing to allow Freddy players to play old Freddy, or simply adding old Freddy back into the game as a separate Killer, would be more fair on people who put the time and effort into learning his old power while not being unfair on the adept new Freddies out there.
"Welcome to prime time, #########!"

I think adding two Nightmares would be fine.
OG Freddy = OG DBD Freddy
New Movie Freddy = Reworked DBD Freddy
They could even make their faces a but different and I think that'd be great.

I like this! It might be a bit more effort on the devs' side, and they've got enough stuff on their plate for a while now, so I wanted to keep my suggestion as low-effort as possible.
If they do find the time, that would be a great idea!

No. I don't remember exact words but they reworked him for a reason.
And what would be the point to keep the old version alive? They would have to do buff and nerfs for that other version too.

Of course the devs had a reason to rework Freddy. They have a reason for every single buff, nerf and other change they make. That doesn't mean I agree with the reason, or that I can't try to provide a solution.
The point? Allowing people who loved old Freddy to play him, and allowing people who loved playing against old Freddy to do so as well. Yes, they might have to do buffs and nerfs, but honestly I think most old Freddy mains would just be happy to have their favourite Killer back. Myself included, although I only mained him for a short while.

Most people I've talked to don't enjoy going against new Freddy either - not to mention Spirit. Chances are, we'll see way more Spirits and new Freddies than old Freddies, since they are both far more powerful than new Freddy. Survivors would maybe run into one old Freddy in a four-hour session. (And let's be honest, even old Freddy is a welcome change from Spirit after Spirit after Spirit.)
I don't think it has to be a sad truth, though! BHVR has been getting much better at listening to the community. We're never going to see it happen if we just give up. The bloodpoints you spent getting old Freddy to P3 will mean something again. Plus, what do we have to lose? Worst case scenario, we get a confirmation from the devs that old Freddy will never return - things stay as they are. We lose nothing.
Best case scenario, we get a beloved Killer back, and one more reason to love BHVR.

devs have (thankfully) already said its not happening.

I believe that if the devs are given enough reason to implement this change, they would. BHVR keeps getting a lot of crap from this community because of the changes they put in place, and I think that's unfair - they're human, and I genuinely believe they're doing their best to try and make everyone happy. This is something that will make a lot of old Freddy mains happy at no cost to those who enjoy new Freddy, so why not?

Bump.

If it was worth keeping in the game, it would not have been re-worked in the first place.

I disagree. Perhaps the vast majority of the community (devs included) believe that, but isn't that what feedback and suggestions are for? I think that if we want to see a change implemented, we should tell the devs about it. It's really easy to say "why aren't they listening to us?!" but obviously they can't listen if we're not talking.
I think it was worth keeping for the sole reason that some people found old Freddy fun, and spent many hours learning to play him well as a result.

An interesting idea
but it's unlikely to happen. Plus, I don't see the community who asked for him to change be okay to go back to him
and to go back on OP's idea, it would mean you sacrifice an add-on (or even multiple) to do this, which would not help.

And I realize it would also require the add-ons for "New" Freddy to work with Old Freddy, unless you cant put them together.

I think the response you'll get is "this isn't worth implementing when the vast majority will not care".

If they changed the 7 seconds to about 4.5 then I would be fine with this. I liked the old freddy concept wise better. My only gripe with freddy is his factory map isn't in the game. That crazy shape his dream world takes in every movie basically. It kinda reminded me of silent hill.
However, instead of taking 2 killer slots you press a button on freddy to switch to the other freddy. Then just stick a logo unique to each freddy in the upper right corner or something so you know which one you on. That way they don't have to redo the select screen and it won't feel overcluttered by having another freddy.

I personally don't care too much if we get old Freddy's addons back. The Killer is what I'm after.

I actually love the reworked Freddy! That's why my idea makes it possible to have both, instead of sacrificing one for the other.

The addon sacrificed makes it so you get 200 extra bloodpoints for having a survivor interact with your snares, but the snares themselves basically do nothing. It's Speed Limiter Freddy. I specifically picked the useless addon.

but OG freddy wasn't just changed because he was 'bad', it was also because OG freddy was annoying to go against and it encouraged stuff like tunneling and camping because you couldnt see him

I did address the tunnelling and camping part in my reasoning. His power made it harder to camp, and actively discouraged tunnelling.
I do also know quite a few people who enjoyed going against old Freddy, although I can definitely see why some people disliked him.
