Are totems considered a secondary objective?

I had a small argument about totems in one of my forums. I stated that totems are considered a secondary objective,but another user said they are not. Let me show the two sides ideas;

-totems are a secondary objective since you get rewarded from doing them after the game in the metals and also it's stated as a secondary objective in a wiki;

-totems are not a secondary objective since the objective is simply to survive. Also, the points you get go to the boldness category not the objective one.

I don't know if he has more to say. See in the comments I probably have quoted him.

What do you guys think. Let me know down below.

    "If noed was basekit or if failing to cleanse all 5 of them always had a consequence, I could consider it as a secondary objective. Cleansing all 5 totems will do absolutely nothing except give you bloodpoints most of the time."

    You can add this to my argument

    In terms of rank, I would say that they are one of many objectives you can do in order to pip, because for the game you don't win unless you pip. You might escape without doing more than 1 gen and just safety pip because you didn't do enough; in terms of rank you completed an objective which is escaping, but you didn't win a pip. At least that's how I see it in terms of rank.

    I've never considered them as a second objective more or less just a free 1000 points

    Totems have literally won me about 36 games in a row @_@

    It's a blizzard here, atm, so I'm about to get shrekked / blow that streak, but in the right builds, totems can be a pain.

    I consider any point earning, plus survival increasing chore in the game an objective. Of course cleansing totems is more optional to survival than not doing gens. However, if the killer has Devour Hope it quickly bumps up in importance. One thing about objectives is they can all be ignored, from opening the gate to saving a person on hook.

    Look at it this way..

    Let’s consider the ”objective” (the goal of the game) as the Main Quest(s) of a storyline.

    The Main Quest(s) in DBD would be:

    • Repairing Generators
    • Escaping
    • Sacrificing Survivors

    These are actually required to complete the game.

    Side Quest(s) would be:

    • Destroying Generators
    • Cleansing Totems
    • Healing Survivors
    • Unhooking Survivors
    • Searching Chests

    While Side Quest(s) add to the storyline or give more activities to complete, they are not necessarily required nor determine whether or not the Main Quest(s) can be Completed.

    So, I would disagree that cleansing totems are a secondary objective. That’s my opinion because it’s not the goal of the game nor does it impede your abilities to do what you’re meant to do.

    Yes and no.

    Doing totems may be a waste of time if a killer don't have NOED. And since the perk is considered to be useful only for noob players, not so many killers run it on high ranks. So you won't have a stable punishment for not cleansing totems.

    Not to mention, solo survivors have a severe lack of information about the totems in general. The main issue here is not knowing how many totems are left there. If every survivor did the bones and run around the map counting how many of them were done, the killer would get too much time. Not to mention, some maps have a lot of well-hidden totems finding which may take ages.

    But let's be real here, all that trouble can be avoided if survivors prepare for the match and use the chat to decide who cleanses the totems. But the community refuses to act like that, so idk.
