Why’d Jane Romero’s face change so much in concept art?
Title. Jane Romero’s face looked SOOOO good in concept art! But for some reason it was drastically changed to how It is now. And it was worsened when the face reworks came out. And you can’t say it was just how she looked in art because in later artworks she obviously had a different face entirely. And considering she has the same outfit in the concept art where she has a (in my opinion better) different face then I assume her face was changed late into character design so…why?

You have to admit, those eyebrows were about to spread out and take flight. They almost had to tone them down without the stylistic art to mask how limitless those eyebrows truly are.

Someone's coming for Queen Jane? ROMERO'S, ASSSEMBLE
8 -
looks way to "beautified" for the game i guess. and then again it is concept art. looking at it then the in game, i prefer in game
2 -
Oh wow I didn’t even notice those haha it looks like they tried to take inspiration off Sofia Vergara’s eyebrows since besides the weird length they look very similar to hers. But tbh if Jane had the face in the concept art I’d easily main her.
2 -
In game she looks more like a King Jane now 😭
4 -
I guess. Idk to me it seems the devs are allergic to making actually pretty and feminine girls. All the pretty girls have manly or tomboyish cosmetics with the only exception being Feng and Jin.
4 -
Say what?
5 -
well most of the females are pretty and most do have some feminine cosmetics. Some of tomboyish ones too. Many have actual dresses and skirts. But Yun-Jin. Poor girl. Only has one good cosmetic. I feel for her, i honestly do.

I know shocking. The only girls who get the pretty girl treatment is the killers :(
0 -
I mean her recolors are pretty. But most of the well actually pretty girls don’t really get feminine cosmetics and if they do it’s once in a blue moon. Like Meg will get one every 10th cosmetic, The most recent to receive one is Kate with her Greek goddess outfit, I would say Elodie’s recent counts but hers has less a feminine aesthetic and more a flamboyant aesthetic.

the females
You mean women?
What would be shocking is if you actually believed what you said before.
1 -
My guess is that she was originally designed after someone on Behaviors team and they probably redesigned her so they wouldnt have to pay likeness royalties to her.
0 -
No I really do. The devs seem allergic to actually pretty cosmetics for the girls. It’s just pants all day long they seem so scared to give a female survivor a skirt besides Feng who has plenty.

Do you enter every thread with the intent to argue semantics? I'm sure Bran isn't trying to be offensive, or whatever it is that you're trying to bait them into with female/woman, but if you pay just a tiny bit more attention you might realize it is likely English isn't their native language and thus they might not see the nuance.
15 -
i suppose.

I like women wearing pants, though. Much more form-fitting and functional than skirts, provided they got some with pockets. It's all a matter of perception.

Pro tip: In English, it sounds extremely weird (to put it mildly) to call women "females".
1 -
Could you stop being condescending?
11 -
Okay well you have 90% of the female cast to enjoy
2 -
That wasn't the intention, it was meant as a genuine piece of advice. I apologize.
Indeed. My point is that women can wear pants and still be feminine and pretty.

i can 100% confirm my native language is English.
i just chalk it up to people speaking differently with their use of words and phrases.

Concept art usually doesn't translate exactly to 3D models. Sometimes the face just changes a bit and they stick with it and render the new face in future artistic depictions.
3 -
Then there's the answer. It was either this or that, but in either case it seemed more reasonable to assume you're not trying to insult anyone.
Anyway, before this thread is derailed even further, I feel like the concept art of Jane would be extremely hard to implement in the game. No matter how I try to visualize her possible model, it always seems extremely uncanny, as the current faces just aren't capable of handling that level of emotion in one's expression. She looks very confident, almost borderline haughty in the concept art, but if they tried to translate that into the game, she'd end up with that Jill/Quentin syndrome.
2 -
I actually think she looks better now. In the concept art she looks like a Kartrashian.
2 -
Have you not played this game? Jane has dresses, Kate has shorts / dresses / skirts, Zarina has shorts / skirts, Yun-Jin has a skirt, Claudette has skirts, the list really goes on… 👀
5 -
I swear, the queen Jane now has the face of a pepega.
Like literally, she looks like a frog or something.
1 -
I like her current face. With the concept art she looks so young and almost like a Kardashian. Now she looks older and more mature, like most TV hosts. Male survivors have a wide variety of age, but most females look like they're in their twenties, so imo it's nice that Jane looks like she could be in her mid or late thirties.
1 -
Idk she just looks well…actually Latina in the concept art. Like I didn’t even know she was supposed to be Hispanic because she just DOES not look it. Not even my family IN Mexico could tell.
0 -
They could’ve made her older without making her…look like that.
0 -
Exactly like her face could’ve been so much more :(
3 -
Kate got kinda ruined by the face reworks as well. I saw tons of negative feedback on it, but nothing was changed.
3 -
Well Yeah but I was saying girls don’t often get the feminine or girly cosmetics beyond Feng and Yun-Jin. Like I understand Kate having only a couple but especially back when Jane was released it was like tomboy galore up until the release of Elodie where they definitely started toning down on masculine female survivors and masculine female survivor skins. Back then (during Jane’s release) we definitely could’ve gotten this version of her and it would’ve stood out a lot more than our current version IMO.
0 -
Don’t remind me :( she used to be my top survivor main, now I only play her if I wanna use a build I don’t have on Yun-Jin yet (tho I’ll go to Cheryl mostly)
1 -
I really like the concept art but I wonder if it was too idealized for DBD, which has always had a more realistic quality to it's character designs. I kind of like that they try to make the survivors look like real people and not like everyone is a face-tuned instagram model.
I still like Jane.
4 -
Idk I feel like I having one extremely pretty female survivor wouldn’t kill them 😭not everyone has to be ugly to be realistic like pretty people do exist.
1 -
The majority of the female (and male to be honest) Survivors are conventionally attractive. None of them are supermodels, but none of them are ugly.
2 -
I’d say most of them are very ugly. Ace, Dwight (post rework), Kate (borders okay), David, Zarina (due to aesthetic mismatch mostly), Jane, Meg, Claudette (not ugly but she’s aight), Adam, Jeff and Adam. I’m obviously only counting originals but beyond them everyone else is just a 6.5 or higher with IMO the prettiest original female survivor being probably Yun-Jin and the handsomest male survivor being Jake.
1 -
To be fair, some of them look much better in renders than in game. idk what happens when they get run through the ugly filter between renders and game.
0 -
I think they just change the models slightly. Like Kate Denson’s original face rework proposal was amazing and made her look awesome but then they changed it when it hit the PTB to look…how it does now…they keep making improvements but overall shes still very ugly

*Women exist in a game*
"UGH! WhY IsNt ShE pReTtIeR?"
There is nothing wrong with Jane.
As to the comment about skirts and looking more "feminine". Just... oof.
2 -
Lol you’re trying hard huh?
bro Jane looks like a man and I’m saying this as a cross dresser she looks more like a dude than me + she doesn’t even look Hispanic like she’s supposed to be.
And I’m not wrong literally during that time the only skirts we had was Claudette’s green rarity outfits, Feng Min’s ‘I <3 the 80’s’ collection, and Feng Min’s Lunar Qipao.
Sorry I wanna dress how I dress irl lol
2 -
Yes I like playing attractive characters of both genders in games, as do a large portion of gamers (I hesitate to claim a majority without direct evidence, though I strongly suspect it). For the same reason actors, spokespeople, TV presenters, models, etc., tend to be attractive.
If I wanted to play an ugly character, I'd just go outside :)
1 -
Ok. Let me be sincere in my comment this time.
As someone who has been told that they don't look like their ethnic background, I think that comment is in poor taste. I have latina friends who look like Jane. I've met latinas who look like Nea or Kate. Just because someone doesn't fit your stereotype does not invalidate the authenticity of their background.
If your issue is that you'd like some more diversity in the cosmetics, then that is valid. I can understand and agree with that. Your post, however, came across to me as a typical "I want the women in the games I play to fit my idea of attractive", compounded with what I perceived as a rigid definition of "femininity", led me to believe your post presented a problematic way of thinking. Perhaps that was just my misreading of your intentions. If so, I apologize.
2 -
Idk what you're talking about Jane had several feminine outfits back then. If your examples are Feng and Yun-jin then that says more to me that you want the cutesy outfits that fit more in an anime than a horror game. Also not all Hispanics look "Hispanic"... You're basically asking for a stereotype.
2 -
I’m literally Mexican I’m asking for someone who at least RESEMBLES a Hispanic. Also Yun-Jin doesn’t have cutesy outfits all her outfits are mature and elegant rather than cutesy and girly. Feng Min’s are on the opposite side of the spectrum and they’re cutesy and Girly instead of Mature and Elegant. The devs have done a better job of giving the girls feminine styles but they still don’t do it as often as they keep doing tomboy or masculine outfits concepts. Zarina would’ve been the perfect survivor to add a mature womanly theme but they dress her like she’s 20 when she looks a LOT older. Like Zarina’s cosmetic is more girly and feminine but it doesn’t fit her. Y’all are literally looking for a reason to claim sexism so hard when I’m literally just saying we don’t need 24/7 tomboy outfits lol. Jane when she released had feminine cosmetics but an extremely manly face and they’ve only worsened that problem she still doesn’t even resemble someone who’s Hispanic besides her jawline but even that’s a stretch.
2 -
not looking for a stereotype I’m looking for someone who genuinely looks Hispanic. Jane has a button nose, extremely light skin, very rounded eyes, etc. it’s not problematic to say that most of the outfits we get for girls come off as more masculine and tomboyish. Like sorry I want to dress in a game how I dress irl lol.
0 -
I hope you mean "extremely light skin compared to the people I'm used to seeing", because if Jane has "extremely light skin", then I must have albinism.
0 -
Like extremely light skin as in she’s pretty evenly toned with the white members of the cast. While I dont mind a Hispanic character being a lighter skin color (hell I’m lighter than a lot of my family due to me being mixed), she should have something to show she’s Hispanic especially as Hispanic as they hype her up to be in lore.
