Who cares about pipping right?

When people say no one cares about pips I cringe. I think they get this idea from content creators that have been playing this game a ######### ton for months and it's easy to repeat. Why is the ranking system constantly complained about as supportative evidence in people's explanations of other topics if nobody cares? Ranks = Amount of pips, right? And...why are there so many try hards if nobody cares?

There are pros that live in low ranks on purpose. Horrible players that were carried to red by SWF groups that can barely do a gen. Not to mention the emblem system mess.

Pips and rank mean very little beyond the value you personally assign to them and that's just a fact.

People generalize much. When somebody says "nobody", they mean themselves first.

I don't care about getting higher or lower in the rank, but I care about game getting too hard or too easy, so it's kind of "indirect caring". I know exactly, which role raking system has in it, so I think that ranking system at least "should be".

I think the real problem is there is a subset of players who care FAR TO MUCH about pips and rank. I understand it's competitiveness and their self worth is tied to the number of their rank.

Overly competitive people ruin the fun of any game experience be it video games, a board game night with friends, or a sporting match. The problem is in the IRL situations you can just stop inviting those people to play with you. In online gaming you unwillingly get stuck with them.

This was from a game where I "won". Still had 3 gens to go, and I managed to down everyone. 2 DCed right before I could hook and sacrafice em, but even if I counted that...would only give me 1 more point towards my score. Games like this that show you that even if you win...you dont always pip.

Ranks, emblems and pips should be removed from the screen. Players would still be matched within their rank range but you wouldn't know which rank you are. Not the best solution, but viable.

I hate pipping, too easy for me to pip to red ranks just to face people who don't play the game for fun anymore

I care about ranks I'm not going to lie to myself about it and it's why I get frustrated sometimes even though I'm a rank 1- 2 killer

I really really wish there was a way to get “fun games,” that you still earned progress for. Sounds weird I know, but as a killer I’d rather play a game where all the survivors get hooked 1-2 times and then escape by the skin of their teeth with me chasing them. This means everyone earned a lot of BP, exp and probably had fun.

As survivor I dislike games where we crank out 5 gens all during the first chase or something similar. I’d rather have a couple good chases, get hooked and make some save after the door gets opened.

The only time I cared about pips was in 2016 when I thought I would get something special hitting the highest rank. Well, I hit rank 1 and just got an achievement. Never cared about pips anymore since then.

Console players don't get an achievement for reaching rank 1, just annoying matches

I just hate pipping because at the higher ranks (Rank 6+) the games really don't change, the only thing that changes is the games become harder to find because you're closer to rank 1. Also the ranking system in this game is one of the worst ive seen for any online game. For killer you can get a 4k with no gens done, and wont pip because you didn't take all survivors to 3rd stage on hook. and with survivor its just too easy, you can do 1 gen and get 2 unhooks and that's a guaranteed safety pip. The ranking system is BAD and the higher ranks are BAD

I’m with you. Honestly I never cared about ranks, but I wanted to make it to rank 1 so people couldn’t say “you don’t care about ranks because you’ve never been red rank.” Well I have, and I still don’t.

I wish they kept rank hidden and only used behind the scenes data for match making. That way they could adjust the algorithm to help against derankers and swf groups.

When matchmaking, they should consider all factors. Overall level, overall wins vs losses, average season end rank (which isn't shown to the player still), how often they DC, etc.

Instead of visible rank up, give people 10 auric cells for each pip, or one shards. Something to incentivize good play.

After 2.5k hours mostly at red ranks, the novelty wears off after a while. I like to know im still good enough to get to rank 1 from time to time, but i dont make any effort to get there or stay there anymore. Whats the point?

  • johnmwarner
    johnmwarner Member Posts: 3,793

This, I accidentally pip up close to red ranks if I ever go for a stretch without getting there I would probably try to prove to myself I still “have it.” Other than than rank 8-12 is the sweet spot for me

When people talk about no one caring its not about its value to some but why should anyone care what rank you are?

Rank in this game doesn't really show any indication of skill as it's more about how much time someone played. Some do rank up quickly which shows they are good players but almost anyone can get there if they play enough within the month.

The rank system has no rewards infact it can feel more rewarding to not rank up in a game that relies on grinding.

There are competative and casual players. The higher the rank the more competative it becomes so casuals don't really belong there and since it actually harder most of the time not to rank up it causes the problem of "potato players" in red ranks.

Those are just some examples and why rank is stated by some to not mean anything as it's not an actual rank system like other games which use an mmr and match people based on skill it is more like a monthly goal to give the players a sense of progression as they play.

  • johnmwarner
    johnmwarner Member Posts: 3,793

Well said, some people do get there quickly but basically anyone and grind out a bunch of games it’s super easy to black pip every game and then whatever games you pupnor double pip move you up. I very very rarely ever depipping unless I just wasn’t trying or something else extreme like being downed early and face camped. Or as killer going against optimal players all with balanced on haddonfield with comms.

if you’re trying to grind BP for alts or items it’s usually better to be in the middle ranks.

I play for pips and I personally find it makes the game more enjoyable and takes the "NEED TO SURVIVE AT ALL COSTS" toxic behaviour out of my game.

If I am playing for pips, I am cleansing totems, doing generators, unhooking survivors, looting chests, being chased. Every game which - I think is the best way to enjoy the game.

I mean you could focus purely on survival and just play blendette and ######### in the tall grass but that's just not me

I only care about pips because the "reach rank 10" achievements keep taunting me in my dreams. :(

  • thesuicidefox
    thesuicidefox Member Posts: 8,223

I disagree. I think players that play for pips are actually less competitive than other players. I'm talking about the ones that only see a 4k/escape as a win. If you play for pips this is less important, you are playing to perform better overall not aiming for a specific goal like number of kills or escapes. I'm fine with dying as survivor if I know I will pip and at least 1 other survivors escapes. I'm fine with giving away hatch if I know I will pip because I'm not playing to kill everyone every game.

These players are the problem. The refuse to yield on their goals and get mad if the other side does anything to stop that. It leads to bullying and toxicity. It leads to killers using broken add-ons and moris, and survivors playing in 4 man squads with keys and insta-heals (well used to until they were nerfed). The fact you can get a 4k or escape and no pip or even depip pretty much let people continue to do this and stay at low ranks to bully other players.

The reason high ranks is hard is because pipping at high ranks is hard and requires you to do a lot of everything. Everyone plays optimally because it's necessary, but that doesn't mean they are playing like jerks. It just means they play the game really well. By contrast, killers going to a 4k will drag out games by slugging, survivors going for an escape will sandbag each other to get hatch or flat out hide from the killer all game and do nothing. That's kind of playing like a jerk if you ask me.

    Lost_in_the_Fog Member Posts: 452

You bring up some good points! I think it can be both types of players. I say this because I've been the target of abusive language in post-game chat specifically over pips. Most toxicity probably comes from people establishing their own internal win conditions be it pips, 4k's, or escapes. In my experience it's much better to go into a match with low expectations and be pleasantly surprised if things turn out well.

slightly OT - how in the world did you manage to get iridescent gatekeeper but just silver chaser :O?

  • thesuicidefox
    thesuicidefox Member Posts: 8,223

For sure, there are still jerks that play for pips. Or they play for pips AND 4k/escapes. But in my experience you are more likely to see toxicity from players playing for anything but pips.

Like I had a game earlier where I died on second hook because everyone was too scared to save me. I depipped. I'm not mad at the killer, and I'm only mildly upset with the other survivors (no hate mail or nothing just like "######### bro?" kinda thing). I took the L and moved on. A lot of players can't do that.

  • SkeletalElite
    SkeletalElite Member Posts: 2,709

I usually don't even look at the pip screen. All I care about is how much BP I got and how many kills/whether I escaped(bonus points for friends escaping too.)

  • LordGlint
    LordGlint Member Posts: 8,553

Using the chainsaw instead of mallet robs you of half your chaser points. The game also ended with 4 slugs at 3 gens to go, so I didn't get into as many chases as I could have, but got a large bonus to gatekeeper for gens remaining. Just wanna add... This was without ruin. Ruin isn't as required as many make it out to be, lol.

  • Nobsyde
    Nobsyde Member Posts: 1,288

regarding Ruin: I suppose it depends very much on the killer. I usually play as Hag and even if Ruin lasts 30 seconds more often than not, it still is paramount to enable me to setup a good amount of traps without having 2 to 3 gens already ready to pop. Once the setup is complete Ruin is not that important.

When I play as Doctor instead I don't use Ruin at all, I just rely on difficult skill checks and Surveillance with a massive terror radius. And I'll go to hell for this, but that's another story.

I don't care about pips, but going against high purple-red rank survivors as a Green killer is no fun because high purple-red rank players (mostly) bully lower ranked players and are tryhard af.

In all fairness, they have no clue your rank. They're just applying their skills under the idea that they're up against equally skilled players.

I don't really care about pips, especially not on my killers. I made it to rank 1 a week before rank reset and honestly, it wasn't as bad as the last times I made it to red ranks. I'm the happiest in purple ranks, so I do care about pips just to escape the green ranks.

I have a terrible time pipping up. Last month I went from rank 18 and 3/4 to rank 14 and 1/4. Something more proficient players would look upon and laugh at as that sort of thing shouldnt take a month to them. My best friend in the game was a rank 8 killer/survivor last month and I enjoy playing in a group with them as it lets me see what its like to play at higher ranks than my rank 15 or whatever.

Still I like to have focus on things I can achieve, which is why all my survivors apart from 2 are now Adept. At rank 16 a depip is failing to get at least 6 points in emblems, a safety pip is 6-9 points and a pip 10 or more up to 14 where it moves to 2 pips.

People have said here that it will be the end of the game if nobody could depip except at rank reset. Already new players at rank 20 for killer get matched with green ranks as there is nobody else around on at the time the player is playing who is anywhere near their level.

But I admit I feel I have improved if each month I end up at a higher rank and can consistently keep my rank. But thats just my opinion.

I don't care about pips. I have no reason to care, they do not give me anything in return.

Walked up and down the ranks by now and I hardly see any difference. There are good players in low ranks and boosted noobs in highranks. Plus there is rank reset every month.

I'd rather not care about playing a particular way just to get a pip.

Now, if they would finally add rewards for ranks then maybe I will care, maybe. And I sure as ######### don't care about cosmetics.

I dont care about pips because the emblem system doesnt even make sense. I got once a good game with a decent leangh. Kinda 5min, I killed all 4 survivors and 4 gens wasnt completed. I got a bronze at chaser and silver at gatekeeber... yeah so I got punished for ending chases quickly... thats why I always laugh about ppl who say "atleast I pip" yeah well with that broken emblem system it is random to pip, this doesnt mean anything how you played.
