What's up with me and my friends talking about the games inability to record your progress for challenges in the rift. Gladi didn't spend money

It does record the progress for challenges!

You mean the XP after a match? For some reason it doesn't update until either you Spectate or the match ends.
If you talk about certain Challenges then either you aren't doing the Challenge as intended or it's a bug.
The Archives don't require you to spend money at all in order to use it so good thing you didn't spend money on something you aren't even able to :)
The Rift requires you to spend money for the Premium track and you can count your Fragment progress in that section on the top right, 10 Frags per Tier and 800xp per Frag.
