Ancestor.

It doesn't specifically say, but he's almost certainly an ancestor, from at least a few centuries earlier. It's possible that he is a son or grandson of the first Yamaoka who is mentioned in the lore behind the Yamaoka Estate map.

The lore heavily implies that he is a distant ancestor and that he is the first yamaoka

It's been said that he is the FIRST of the Yamako family, and that he planted the tree within the garden of the new map.
I believe. I'm pretty sure that's how the lore went. I don't have access to the PTB to check.

I don't think Oni is the first Yamaoka. Nothing in his lore suggests that he was a shipwreck survivor or came from a distant island, but it does mention wanting to surpass his father's reputation, and the lore of the new map states that the Yamaoka estate was his childhood home. So it seems most likely that he is the son of the first Yamaoka, who was a shipwreck survivor and a famous warrior who built the Yamaoka estate.
If you're interested in the contents of the chapter from the PTB, including the full lore of both characters, I transcribed it all in a post here: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/105860/all-the-contents-of-the-cursed-legacy-chapter-in-one-handy-location-3-4-0-ptb#latest

It's most likely just an ancestor, not the first Yamaoka family member... but an ancestor that started the whole legend of The wandering Oni.
@Fibijean I wouldn't say he was the first Yamaoka, since the story says he had a father... which technically means that father would have family members before him as well. It seems to most likely just be the most infamous member of their family that started the entire legend in the first place.

Yeah, that's why I said in two different comments, based on his lore and the lore of the Yamaoka maps, that Oni wasn't the "first Yamaoka" mentioned in the Yamaoka Estate lore.

Right, he's the most infamous one indeed though.

There are some indications in the description of the Spirit's halloween skin.

I think that's just to follow with the legend.
The Oni isn't really an Oni per-say... he's just a guy with violent tendencies that made it easy to compare him to an Oni. That, and the way he would fight others made people just automatically assume this.
I don't think he's actually an Oni, nor does the lore flat out admit this, but I can say whoever fought him and whoever watched him fight just assumed it to be true. That's what legends are, they're for the most part just fabrications of the real story... not lies, but beefed up to be more dramatic and entertaining.
So when her skin says "Her birthright" it's doing a call back to The Oni's past and his legend among folk lore.

Renjiro is the first Yamaoka. The Splintered Hull add-on is from the ship he was on when it sank. The first Yamaoka was a shipwreck survivor. Either the Yamaoka family is just really unlucky, or this is confirmation.
It's Kazan's relationship to Renjiro we need to figure out (I'll figure out where they fit into the timeline when they actually come out). Renjiro's Bloody Glove states "The glove Renjiro held to his sternum following the strike by his son." Kazan fought against his father. The thing that complicates this is that Kazan struck his father in the head, not sternum. But I don't know why this add-on would be important to Kazan otherwise. So, again, unless the Yamaoka's are EXTREMELY unlucky, Kazan is the SECOND Yamaoka.
So, distant ancestor = Yes. First Yamaoka = No.

I think the "strike" it's implying is the moment Kazan was about to kill his father on the bridge leading to the lord he was heading to. (To kill of course, it says the lord "defiled his name" or something.)
His father was in disguise and was about to kill Kazan but stopped, in the end Kazan took the upper hand and killed his father. I assume THAT'S what the glove is implying, since nothing else fits.

And considering that he died with no mention of a wife or children probably means that while he was the first son of the first Yamaoka he probably wasn't the ONLY son.
So to Rin, Kazan is like her great great great grande uncle.

The add-ons suggest he had a son.

Akito's Crutch reads "The crutch used by Kazan's son after falling from a tree."
The Child's Wooden Sword and Blackened Toenail add-ons also mention Akito. And the Cracked Sakazuki add-on reads "A cup from Kazan's wedding ceremony". (And if anyone is wondering, I have this information written down.)

Oh so maybe he is her great etc grandfather.
Hard to imagine someone as sadistic and ruthless as Kazan having a kid. His wife must have been Fiona.
