What happens when survivors escape?

Title says all, I’m sure this has been discussed before, but was didn’t find anything. Do they return back to the campfire? Or do they return back to where they left off when the entity took them?

    They return to the campfire. The only advantage to escaping the trial, lore-wise, is that you don't have to go through the ordeal of being brutally murdered. And you get to keep your items, which might help you survive the next trial.

    There is no known way to escape the Entity's realm, although I believe we do have confirmation that some people have done it. None of those people are on the current survivor roster, though. The survivors we play as are still stuck in an endless cycle of trial after trial, but still retain some hope, which is why they are still in the trials and not floating around as useless husks somewhere in the void.
