The Problem With Prestige

A lot of you may not know this, but there was a point in time where The Store didn't exist. Meaning the only thing survivors and killers could do to look good was prestige their character and go off the default costumes. Oh yeah, and the charity case.

In order to prestige, you have to get a character to level 50. What happens when you prestige as survivor? Well, you lose all your perks, items, ass-ons, and offerings BUT you get a bloody torso, pants, and head. Though, you get one piece of bloody cosmetic for each time you prestige.

What happens when you prestige as killer? Almost the same thing. You lose all your perks, add-ons, and offerings BUT get a bloody weapon, clothes, and head. Though, again, one piece of bloody cosmetic for each prestige.

Ever since The Curtain Call chapter there has been no real reason to prestige your character, since there are cooler cosmetics in the store.

For instance, my Feng is p3 and I love her "blue hair trapper face mask" head, so I use that instead of her bloody face. Thus I have no real way to show off that I had to grind for that p3.

How to make prestiging worthy again? Easy! Have optional blood being on cosmetics we bought from the store. Ya know what I mean? Let me use my Feng example if you're confused. Since my Feng is p3 and have bought that head, I could put blood on the cosmetic. Making the Trapper Surgical mask and her face bloody.

A bloody overlay would be cool.

To counter though I think several of the prestiges are still better than anything in the store. Plague, Huntress, Clown, and Spirit come to mind. Also I tend to mix prestige pieces in with store/rift cosmetics as well.

I have noticed that older characters tend to have worse prestiges in my opinion. Not a fan of Trappers, Hag, or Doctors.

The devs have addressed this on many occasions. They can't do a single "blood overlay". In order to make this work, they would have to manually apply blood splatters to every single cosmetic that exists, which would be a huge amount of work for minimal reward.

Prestige cosmetics do still mean something to some people, especially for characters who don't have that many Store cosmetics. Some people would rather save their shards for characters or perks, and so they like being able to buy an outfit with bloodpoints. Some just genuinely prefer the blood-splattered default outfit to anything in the Store.

If it makes you feel any better, given how easy prestige is to get now, you're not really missing out on much in the "showing off" department by not using the prestige outfit. In fact, if you care about that sort of thing, Store cosmetics are probably more of a flex than a prestige head.

Great idea, but I think the only way that it would happen would be if it was something they could sell. They aren't going to spend a lot of labor on something that won't make any money (and I don't blame them).

God forbid the Devs actually have to work to do something good for the community. for free.

I don't see them ever doing this for all cosmetics. But I think it's reasonable for each character to have a special set of cosmetics that also give access to a bloody version if the player is prestiged. Hell, make it exclusive and cost more.

When I said "minimal reward" I meant mainly for the community. Having a prestige option for every single skin just because there might be a few community members who would like blood splatters on that particular cosmetic isn't really worth the investment.

The devs do work hard to do good things for the community all the time. Personally, I'd rather those good things took the form of new cosmetics with widespread appeal rather than recolours of old ones that only a handful of people would even care about.

Oh, and I think there is a better option to make prestiging matter but not in any way necessary. I would like to see an option in the future to "re-roll" things bought in the bloodweb. Make it cost the same as purchasing the first time but the player can pick the thing they want. So for example on Hillbilly if I wanted to exchange a chainsaw file for a spark plug I could pay 3k bloodpoints. This would only be unlocked at level 50. For each prestige rank the cost is reduced by 10%. So a P3 Hillbilly could make the same exchange for 2700 bloodpoints.

Each prestige level should unlock a loadout slot. So we can save loadouts (that would include perks, addons/items, and even outfits), per survivor/killer, for different situations without having to switch around perks all the time.

    There, simple, yet adequate incentive.

A handful of people?? Just because you don’t care about doesn’t mean thousands of people don’t lol. There is 0 point to prestige. If they add this feature of adding the blood to shop items, it would be awesome. Personally idc whether they do or not because I know BHVR and I know they won’t end up doing it, like everything else. But if this was a thing then I’d start prestiging my characters.

and I know what you meant by “minimal reward” but that excuse isn’t even good. That’s like not adding extra stuff to your essay or presentation to make it even better to secure the 100%. It’s the little features they could add that would make this game 10x better.

A few thousand is a handful, relative to the entire DBD playerbase. Sure, a lot of people might be interested in having a prestige version of their favourite cosmetics, but how many people would be specifically interested in a bloody version of Meg's Tempo Runner Braids, or Jeff's Gallery Opening Gala Dress Shirt and Blazer? That's what I'm talking about, not that there aren't that many people that would care for the idea in general, but the devs would have to do that for each individual piece, and how many players are really going to benefit from one single cosmetic piece having blood on it?

Any kind of investment is a matter of balancing sacrifice and reward. What you get out of it has to be worth what you put in for it to be a good investment. Your essay metaphor is a great example. If you write a great essay, you may well be able to make it a near-perfect essay by spending ten more hours working on it. But is the difference between a 95% and a 98% really enough to make all that additional work worthwhile, when you could have spent those ten hours improving your health or spending quality time with your family, or getting a different project halfway done? Probably not.

If the developers had infinite hours to work on the game, this is probably something that would be worth doing. But they have limited time and limited resources, and there are many, many things that are more worthwhile for them to be spending those resources on.

    Like only cash grabs?

theres a reason why fortnite is still on top. They actually get involved with their players, and add some new things to the game that are free. They add little details that people don’t even ask for but are grateful to have. Plus they’re fast at updating bugs and nerfs.

bhvr needs to space out the chapter updates a little more or be quicker with bug fixes/nerfs/buffs/updates and new features.

or even just forget about 1 new chapter and just focus on fixing things

I won't argue with you there, but you're changing the topic now. Bug fixes and balance changes benefit everyone, so of course they should be a focus. But as for the art team, their time would be better spent on designing new content - characters, maps, cosmetics, etc. - which I guess you can call "cash grabs" if you choose.

They can use animation tricks for that, though. The Oni's mori only has to work visually from one angle, and if you look closely on different survivors, you'll notice with some models and/or outfits it clips in weird places or doesn't show up quite as well. That's the sort of thing you can get away with in a 10-second animation with a fixed camera angle, but not a cosmetic that has to look good and realistic from all angles and while performing twenty different animations throughout the match.

I'm against the loadout reward for prestige. That should be simply a new feature, not restricted in any way. If at all, make it base 3 for eacht character and +1 for each prestige
