The Reason DC Time-outs Aren't Okay as is, and How to Fix Them.
So, DC time-outs are somewhat commonplace in a lot of competitive games, namely FPS's and some fighting games, among others. Dead by Daylight has always had a DC problem, and so why not implement a DC time-out system, right?
Well, Dead by Daylight is very much different in gameplay style and individual game impact.
A single game of DbD matters much, much more than a single game of say, Team Fortress 2 or Mortal Kombat.
A game of DbD takes, on average, 4-8 minutes to get into, between matchmaking times and loading times. Based on personal experience and timings, playing in the US on Xbox. I'm assuming nearly the same for US on PC.
The average game of DbD, from the data post in the News section in May 2019, is between 11 and 13 minutes long.
Generally, this means that, because of wait times, and because not everyone has all day to play, a single game of DbD will require a large amount of bloodpoints to feel worthwhile, and it should be fun for everyone involved, lest it be a massive time waste and immense disappointment for some, leading into annoyance. This annoyance is what facilitates the vast majority of DCs, in my opinion. The things that lead to little bloodpoints being earned or unfun matches are usually, slugging, camping, or extremely OP add-ons or perk combos.
You also have to factor in that DbD isn't perfect, and there's bugs that happen all the time that force players to DC, otherwise being soft-locked.
So, given this, what should the DC time-out system look like for DbD?
The first couple of DCs a day (let's say 3) should not incur any penalty. Upon the third DC in a day, a warning should be given telling the player that the next DC they make will incur a penalty, then start at the 5 minute time-out for the first penalty, ramping up from there.
This way, the players that get unlucky bugs or are facing other unfun or toxic players won't be punished nearly as heavily as they would with the current DC time-out system, as is.
