    I've heard scathing reviews.

    It seems like the sort of thing that would be extremely difficult to do well, without just making it look really stupid.

    That's often the case when people try to translate one form of media directly into another with no particular regard for either. It doesn't turn out well, which is why things need to be adapted, not directly translated, because what works in one medium may not have the same effect in another.

    In the case of Cats, I'm guessing one of the problems was that people can suspend their disbelief much more easily with a stage musical than with a film, because people are used to films trying to imitate life. And when they can't, and you can clearly see it's just a bunch of famous people jumping around in catsuits, it falls rather flat.
