What happens if we get dlc cosmetics in the rift and don't own the character?

Would we get auric cells instead? And if we buy the character after do we get the cosmetic as well?

I believe they are unlocked as normal, and are available if you later obtain the character. That's how, for instance, the Lunar cosmetics for Feng and Ace work.
