Does Reporting Players Actually Matter

So I'm sure everyone has reported a person or two in their time playing. Anytime I run into players that are abusive in post game chat / body block or trap players in game so they can't play I always report them. My question is, does anyone know how common it is for players to be banned in game? I know it is important to report when players are breaking the rules, esp because I used to play MTG locally in tourneys and that's when you actually have money and prizes on the line. I know Wizards of the Coast obviously has rules and guidelines on how many infractions you get before you get banned from play, but I run into a lot of toxic players in post game chat (I know this is old news to any killer mains) and wanted to know how much us reporting them for harassment / trolling actually affects anything or how the process works.

So, I remember watching a fog whisperer (actually, two different ones have said this in their streams) say that they have their own special super happy fun fog whisperer discord that they can report people in. Directly to the developers. I also heard them say that they had reported multiple people for post-game chat that contained racist stuff and the like, as well as exploit abusers and lag switchers etc. According to them (and they have a better track record of being truthful to us than the devs at this point), nothing was ever done and "The only thing BHVR cares about is that you don't disconnect from their game".

I don't know if that's true. I just don't think it would surprise anyone...having said that, the reports might do something. But who knows.

I'd personally love to hear from BHVR about this too. I end up reporting about 2 people a day. Some choice excerpts:

Racial slurs. Homophobic slurs. Transphobic slurs.

"your parents never loved you" "I bet they disowned you"

Instructions on how to "get to my next life where maybe I'll be a decent person".

People stalking my steam profile, seeing I was from Canada, and saying they were glad that 57 Canadians died in the recent Ukranian Airways disaster.

People stalking my steam profile and going back through my old names so they could threaten me with my IRL name (thankfully it wasn't my real name just a nickname, but they didn't know that)

People giving graphic descriptions of what they hope will happen to my pets and all those I love.

I report these in-game and submit screenshot reports for egregious ones (not for swear words, just for IRL threats to kill me, serious slurs, etc). So far I have seen a lot of people I've reported, still kicking around. In some cases I have gotten multiple threats weeks apart from the same people and sometimes I'm just wanting to get to the next game, so I didn't used to always report them.

But for now, I do, and I will.

I'm also putting together a catalog of the worst ones, with date stamps, with the names redacted, so I'll have a kind of log. I play a LOT so I do see more than most people, but... it'd be a lot more encouraging and I'd feel a lot more certain that it's right to report the egregious ones, if someone official said yes things are done. I don't need specific feedback on cases, just any reassurance, say that even one person in the last 6 months has been banned for things they said, or, indeed, ever.

That's another problem: people in post game chat tell me that BHVR doesn't care, and I bet lots of people believe that and don't report anything, so firm word the other way would be helpful.

PLayed for years, and the last time I saw BHVR actually care about it was when people were grabbing IPs, because then, and only then, does it become a legal hazard for the company

Reporting people definitely does have consequences. Assuming their word counts for something as far as you're concerned, the devs have confirmed this on multiple occasions.

Of course, this is only as long as what they did is a reportable offence and you followed the guidelines for reporting. For example, certain offences, like griefing or holding the game hostage, require clear video proof for anything to be done about them. It's likely that most people who think reporting doesn't do anything actually just didn't lodge their report properly or reported for something that isn't actually against the rules, because that does happen a lot.

I assure you people get punished frequently, just keep in mind that temporary bans don't show up on their Steam profile.

Also that offense might have been the only one they had, they got a 48 hours ban, they regretted saying anything and hopefully stopped doing it (I know it's hypothetical, but that's what punishments are for, to make people realize their mistake and maybe change).

Sadly a lot of people don't bother reporting, so some of those individuals end up doing that a lot and not getting punished because no one reported them, so I want to encourage everyone to report slurs, death threats and comments like that, it's something that greatly hurts our community and shouldn't happen.

On a totally unrelated note, your post background is pretty sick looking. 🧐

I doubt that it works, i reported people with everything BHVR wants you to do.

People that threatened to kill me, my family etc and so on.

Keep in mind this is not only report, but also finding out steamID64 and so on and so forth to those who already made such a ticket, yet nothing happens. So yeah i doubt they give a ######### about it, i mean here they will say they do but uhm you know actions speak louder than words.

It does work I've been banned super recently for abuse of end game chat. I've since learned to control my temper. :)

The real question is does reporting someone on another platform that isnt PC (so like console and switch) do anything ?

Yes, i've gotten at least 3 people banned from my in-game reports thus far.

I had their Steam profiles saved as bookmarks, and they all gained VAC bans in 7 days max.

Yes console reporting has exactly the same consequences as PC - the only difference is because you don't have the endgame chat, chat offences are deal with by the respective platforms, so it's up to them what rules they apply to that. We don't have control over it.

I would add for in game offences, we will need evidence - video evidence, this can be sent to Support https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/19450/game-rules-and-report-system#latest

For how to record on your console please see more information here: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/66835/recording-evidence-for-your-player-report#latest

Considering how often I see vile stuff in postgame chat (multiple times every day), I would wager the bans are slaps on the wrist. Players wouldn't say what they say as often as they say it if the bans were significant. It's a moral issue to me. There's no excuse for racist, homophobic stuff, or telling someone to off themself. Not sure why that's not a permaban on first offense. What community do you want playing your game?
