Um... paywall much?
So, let me start by saying that I'm excited for the new Rift and Archives - but... and this is a BIG but... I'm seeing that there are many of the challenges in the archives and items in the rift that are tied to DLC characters. So, not only do I have to spend the $8+ on the Rift pass, but now I have to buy specific characters so that I'm able to complete these challenges? This doesn't seem right to me. I get that they want to put a specific focus on characters, but what about those that can't afford to purchase those characters needed at will?
It seems like a poor choice to lock completion of challenges behind a paywall. I see this deterring newer players from purchasing the Rift or feeling like they can be a part of the community completing the challenges in the Archives. Even "veteran" players, like myself, that haven't made the choice to purchase some of these specific characters are at a loss.
On another note, I'm also a multi-platform player (Xbox + PC) and I have different characters purchased or earned on each. While I had no issue buying the Rift pass on both platforms last time, I had decided to only focus on one platform for my Rift pass this time around due to funds, and I kind of feel cheated.
How far away could we possibly be from a cross-progression system? How hard would it be for them to implement a cross-progression system? I think it would only help to grow the community. I'm not even talking cross-play, I would just like to be able to know that my progress made on one platform could carry over to another.
Just some thoughts. Much love. Discuss.

They are also optional as well

please read before continuing
So, for the first part of the question i'm going to cut it off and make it into it's own sub-section below, than i'll focus on the other question on Cross-Progression in it's own sub-section as well. This should help with finding the answers you need and make them easier to read... hopefully.
question 1 (the rift passes character specific requirements)
So, i'd like to debate a bit on why this isn't really a paywall scenario. For one, the characters that require these challenges to be completed CAN be purchased with the in-game currency called "Iridescent shards". Now, here's where newer players come in. You could say it's unfair to a newer player, since they don't have a stock-pile of shards to spend on Killers like The Doctor for example.
But here's the thing, all of the challenges (that we've seen so far) are done with Survivors and Killers that you can buy with Iridescent Shards. So, you can easily skip these challenges and than unlock the characters with Iridescent Shards later to complete said challenges at another time.
If it was a Killer or Survivor that required you to spend Auric Cells to buy them, than it would be in a sense a pay-wall to complete these challenges, which I personally don't agree with. But, BHVR didn't go this route, so you can simply unlock the characters by just playing the game normally and THAN completing the challenges later once you can buy these characters.
I do agree that it would seem kind of... unfair I suppose to new players that don't already own these characters or have Iridescent Shards to buy them. But, each Rift gives you 70 days to complete it, and if you're starting on day 70, 60, 50, and even 40 (and maybe 30), than you can easily get the shards to buy these characters and complete these challenges.
question 2 (Cross-Progression & Cross-Platform play)
We have no information on how Cross-Platform Play is going, and that especially means the same for Cross-Progression.
These two concepts are indeed on BHVRs mind, but it's unknown if they'll give an update on the concept within a few weeks or even months. Most of these questions however are directed towards a developer, which isn't going to get you an answer outright on the subject since they don't seem to want to give an opinion on it at the moment.
If you're lucky than they might, but I personally doubt it.

I actually agree with you. Given how difficult shards are to earn, I don't think it's fair to force players to buy particular characters that they might not even want in order to do the challenges. I wouldn't have a problem with it if the rewards were only limited to things like lore and bloodpoints, which aren't on a time limit, but the fact that the challenges are tied to Rift progress puts players who can't buy the characters for whatever reason at a disadvantage when it comes to completing the Rift.
There are 12 challenges in the Tome, from what is currently known about it, which are DLC character-specific, all of which are master challenges, meaning that players who don't have access to the DLC characters miss out on six tiers' worth of progression. The number of missed tiers becomes 10.5 if we include challenges that require DLC perks (which are accessible through the Shrine, but not necessarily to all players, depending on their circumstances).
Personally, I feel that a better solution would be to make relevant DLC characters free to play (but without the ability to unlock their teachable perks) for the duration of the Rift, and then lock them again afterwards. This way, players can use them to complete challenges, even invest bloodpoints into leveling them, but will have to purchase them in order to continue playing with them once the Rift closes.

100% this.
I unlocked via shrine of secrets several perks of dlc survivors, since they are just skins and don’t add anything gameplay wise - now there’s no way I’m spending 9000 iridescent shards on a character which would give me nothing, all her teachable have been given here and there as far as I remember.
I would understand challenges tied to character for killers, since there’s very different mechanics involved, but survivors... that’s cheap.
Yeah everything it’s optional, whatever, it still feels a bit uncalled for. Especially when there were so many free characters still to use.

I guess I'm ok with it we were going to get to this section eventually.
After they finished with the four original and then maybe squeezed in last breath and lullaby which were free chapters as well you would then be only left with paid DLC chapters.
We were essentially going to hit this pitfall sooner or later so I guess it's better that they're just putting in the characters they prefer or currently have Tome and Rift ideas for rather than trying to force things out of their ass to get all the free ones out first which would make the stories sound very terrible and not worth the effort

Some people main the premium characters. I wish they had more kate stuff. She is pretty much the only survivor I use. Only time I use another survivor is for rift challenges or daily rituals.

I'm more irritated that the Lunar Event stuff is locked behind the pass.

about rift if you didnt wasted AC from 1st rift you can buy it again! xd and you should get it back xd you know you can use same AC over and over again? RIGHT??? or maybe you wanted AC skin and forgot about next rift so you have to waste real money again (and thats on you)
about DLC characters,
1st) all of them you can buy via shards,
2nd) you dont need them to finish archives (they are just sideways)
3rd) you dont need archives to finish rift xd
why would you care about lore of characters you dont even want to buy via shards??
if you dont want to pay, Grind. If you dont want to grind, Pay. If you dont want to do any of these dont expect to have everything xd

If you havent bought the dlc characters by now do you even dbd bro?

Some people don't want to spend money of a character they will never play, or in a survivor's case, perks they will never use.
I think this is an amazing solution. Instead of forcing someone to buy a character they won't play, why not let them use them for the Rift, similarly to the Splinter offerings, as kind of a free trial for that killer. Then maybe they realize they actually enjoy how they play and end up buying them after all.

I think they should do it like Team Fortress 2 with its contracts in the pyro update. Like when you start a contract with a weapon that you don’t have, the game will lend you the weapon to complete the challenge. So my idea for DBD is when you start a challenge like survive the trial as Jane Romero for example; the game will let you use Jane with her 3 unique perks at tier 1 and only her 3 perks. No other perks or items can be used unless it’s a part of the challenge. Once the challenge is complete you cannot use Jane anymore unless there is another challenge for her. The same can apply for the killer side of challenges, like if you don’t have Spirit, the game will let you use spirit with only her 3 unique perks at tier 1; no add-ons or other perks unless the challenge involves a specific perk for that killer with only the tier 1 variant. This will allow players to earn those fragments to make the most of the free or premium track of the rift before it closes and for lore without being locked behind a pay wall but if they want to level up use other perks and add-ons they would have to buy them.
Thats my idea anyway I think it’s beneficial for both players and devs. Players will not be stuck behind a pay wall to get fragments or lore but will not be able to use the character fully.

I didn't buy the last chapter because it held no interest for me.

If you decided to never play a certain character for "reasons" then dont let the rift talk you out of it...stand tall and main your adam or pig and say ######### you rift!!!

The point is not everyone has all the DLC. Which to me makes having Dlc stuff in the challenges a bad idea.

It's funny how this rift seems even worse than the first one in many ways, especially with that stupid mismatch in number of challenges
0 -
No it doesnt. The point is the devs have every right to use every aspect of theyre game. If you chose not to get dlc then you chose not to do those challenges

Making people even less likely to by their battle pass that they're pimping.

What they should've done is introduced splinters for dlc killers and a similar type of offerings for survivors in a bloodweb to be able to play as them with 3 teachable for the duration of the rift.

Just because the devs have the right to do whatever they like with the game - and they do - doesn't mean that the players have to like it, or that they're not allowed to respectfully express their dissatisfaction with a particular feature. Constructive criticism is not only healthy for the game but actively welcomed and encouraged by the developers themselves. Not to mention it's in their best interests as a business to do their best to deliver an enjoyable and player-friendly experience since if they don't, as @thrawn3054 pointed out, they're likely to lose customers as a result.

Thank you to those of you that offered constructive opinions and solutions. These criticisms, as always, come from a place of love. This is about making sure that the game and community are moving in the best direction. Finding that balance between catering to us veteran players and making sure that new players have an opportunity to feel catered to, I believe, is important. I feel like these challenges and the Rift pass are very much catered to those that are able to have ALL the characters and ALL the time to complete it. I understand that it can't be so easy or so base leaning that veteran / invested players will lose interest. That was never my point.
I'm just think about ease of access for all. I will concede that there is definitely a direct line through part one of this Tome - but that means you lose out on the amazing lore that they've taken the time to put together for us. So now, even veteran players are put in a position where we have to chose to use our in game currency in ways that we might not otherwise because of the way the new content is setup. I never intended to buy Jane Romero or her perks from the Shrine, but now I'm almost forced to. I never wanted to play David King - luckily I somehow had him and got his first Master challenge done as a lvl one David with JUST that perk on. (yay, teamwork)
I want to see the Rift and Archives be appealing to ALL - the more appealing it is to a wider audience, new players especially, the more money the devs make off of it, the more monetary resources they'll have to make the game better. *cough-like fixing the damn hit boxes-cough*
Again, thank you all that have joined the discussion. Constructive criticism and discussion is how this game we all love (or have a masochistic relationship with) and this community we all love (unless you purposefully DC when you're losing...quitter...) will continually get better.
Much love - happy hunting / surviving

True and no one ever said there was a problem with the playerbase expressing their opinion. Likewise, as part of the playerbase i also have an opinion. If some people dont choose to buy dlc characters or complete challenges, its fine. Im just voicing the opinion for those who do choose to support the game and experience all of the content.

Respectfully, my point is that you're not really "forced" to buy content you dont want to. If you want to earn the lore for certain characters, I think it's fair that the devs require you to play said character. Otherwise you still have the opportunity to complete the archive and rift without needing to do anything out of your comfort zone. Personally i would be disappointed if they omitted the lore for the dlc characters and am hoping they work out a way in the future to also include the licensed ones as well.
