Parents issues
Just noticed that many killers and survivors share some conflicts with their parents. Those conflicts literally made them who they are now. Definetly can't argue that parents have SIGNIFICANT role in one's personal growth. But, well, Bhvr... maybe you overdo it... just a bit?
Gonna go brief, cause it's a lot ground to cover.
Killers. Just think about it, if only they had wiser parents and happier childhood...
Trapper - Archie MacMillan is a really violent and cruel person. Just like his son, the image of it.
Hillbilly - His parents treated him like a monster, which he became eventually.
Huntress - Born in wild, her way of life definetly was chosen by her mother. It left some crucial mark in her mind.
Bubba - His parents are damn cannibals. Not to mention, he was afraid to dissapoint them.
Pig - Her backstory is more about her mentor and how Entity tricked her. But, well, there is definetly something wrong with your mind, if you think that reverse bear traps are made to help people find new meaning of life.
Clown - His dad became alcogolic cause his wife died during Clown's birth. Dad didn't give a single ######### about his son, until it became too late.
Spirit - Was literally killed by her father. Before it, she was forced to do those Kendo lessons, which she definetly didn't like at first. She still agreed on those, just to don't make her father angry.
Legion - Frank was in foster families from 6 years old. Didn't had a real childhood. Last Frank's stepdad didn't give a ######### about him, so he became criminal gang leader. Man, children these days...
Oni - His father literally couldn't stop the stuff his son did. Until it was too late, and he made attempt to kill him.
Survivors. They either had tragic backstories, which made them stronger, or actually good and supportive parents.
Claudette - We know that her parents supported her in crucial times, so she grow up kind and empathic person.
Meg - Her father left her, mother became ill. She stayed with mother instead of attending to colledge.
Jake - Became loner, cause couldn't bear his parents lineage.
Nea - Had a deep conflict with parents, cause of she was forced to move to USA and left her friends behind. Became a rebel as we know her.
Feng - Also had deep conflict with her parents. She really regrets it tho, feeling of guilt haunts her.
David King - Had some deep issues with his family, as we learn from the archives.
Quentin - Let's put it like this: his father is one of the many responsible of burning Freddy Krueger. Not really making life easier for his son.
Adam - Was raised by uncle, as his father died. Fair to say, uncle made Adam who he is now, as he valued education the most.
Jeff - His parents divorced not making easier life for boy. Family problems helped him find new hobbies, which had further developed and became his job. His father also partially responsible for Jeff's transfer for Entity's realm.
Jane - Overcoming her parents issues in her shows is one of the things that keep her going.
Yui - Her grandparents helped her to became a biker.

I don't think they over do it at all. Your parents are the defining factor in shaping what kind of person you grow up to be. Even if you end up nothing like them in the end there are still traces of their influence you can't escape. For serial killers there is a disturbing correlation between abuse they suffered at the hands of family as a child and their deranged actions in adult hood. I think it is very plausible that most of the human killers in DBD had some form of a ######### up childhood that molded them into the monsters they are.

Most people have issues with their parents at some point in their lives, even if it's just during those rebellious teen years. You could argue that the DBD lore is overdoing it, if the DBD characters were just a random selection of people. But we know that's not the case - the Entity doesn't pick people up randomly, it chooses them to suit its purposes, and their backgrounds surely have something to do with that because, as @SadonicShadow pointed out, a person's background and upbringing have a huge impact on the kind of person they turn out to be.

I think it's hard to balance between "you're overdoing it with the parents thing" and "is that really a good reason for that?" because imagine if one of the killer's backstories was that they set themselves on fire because their boyfriend/girlfriend cheated on them. It's kinda like... drama queen!
But with parents, you know, we already understand that connection and understanding, and when that's tinkered with... usually seems more impactful.
But, it would be cool to see more killers with more creatively traumatizing backgrounds. Haha imagine a killer that just got so fed up with crappy relationships that they just went feral :) I'd play that one!
