Chapter Concept: When We Fall (New Killer: The Fallen + New Survivors: Damien and Serena Amber)
There are many challenges we face everyday. Often times, these challenges have a physical manifestation, like a person. They are our enemies. And sometimes, the enemy that we face... is our own selves.
KILLER: THE FALLEN (ROSE LEE WARD)
BACKGROUND:
Rose Lee Ward could only be described as simply wonderful. She brought joy to anyone she encountered. Her cheery attitude was seemingly infectious and she spread smiles to everyone in her little suburban town. But deep down, Rose was hurting. She recently had lost her mother, her best friend, and without her, she felt lost. She tried giving all her love she had for her mother out, and putting trust in more and more people. Eventually, she learned the hard way that you only can trust as far as you can throw it.
Rose's trust was time and time again abused by those who used her, and though her real friends wanted the best for her and tried to help her, she wanted to believe that they'd stop wronging her, and eventually those people took it too far, robbed her, stabbed her with a pair of scissors, and left her on the side of the road to die. Rose didn't scream. All she did was smile, close her eyes, and imagined seeing her mother again.
"I'm so happy I get to see you again, Mom."
She felt a cold fog bask over her body. It felt like death, but not quite what she imagined.
She didn't open her eyes for a long time, and then a voice called out, high-pitched.
"Hello?" asked the voice.
Rose opened her eyes and saw a little Asian girl with purple hair. "Is she dead?" the girl turned to a red-headed girl beside her. The red-head ran over and checked for a pulse.
"I'm okay," Rose said.
The two girls, Feng Min and Meg Thomas asked for Rose's name, saying they thought she was dead. They explained that there are more of them, and to follow, as Rose was "new there". Rose had thought she was in Heaven, but the group told them that they were in a special kind of Hell, The Realm of The Entity, and that they had one goal, survive. Suddenly, Rose faded out, and was dropped into another place, her very first trial.
Rose quickly learned methods of surviving through her newfound friends. She could trust again and dreamed of being able to see her mother again after each escape. She had placed her trust in those unworthy once more. One trial, her friend Damien bargained with the killer to let her escape for a chance to kill Rose. Rose had always escaped, and Damien was on his last chance to escape before he was lost. The killer had an insatiable urge to kill her. He led the killer straight to Rose, held her down, and gave the killer just enough time to kill Rose. Rose gasped out "I thought you were my friend" as she was sacrificed.
When Rose returned, she ran and ran. She finally realized that she couldn't really trust anyone. As she ran, she felt the anger overcoming her. On her next trial, Rose did everything possible to kill every last one of her teammates, even at the cost of her own life. Darker and darker fog swirled around her with each death, and then...
The Entity had taken a liking to her, wrapping her in dark robes, equipping in her hand a single, iridescent scissor blade, one she recognized as being lodged into her torso on the night she was killed by those she trusted.
Rose lifted the blade and wept.
THE FALLEN'S ARSENAL:
Appearance: A short and agile looking figure. A short cloak that went down to above her waist on her shoulders and a hood on her head, with a wilted rose pinned to it, casting a shadow across her face, only revealing her glowing eyes. Her arms are wrapped in cloth and her hands are covered with bloodied gloves. She wears boots capable of stomping out hard objects. In her hands, the Iridescent Scissors, slightly radiating a deep red energy.
Height: Average/Short
Speed: 115% or 4.6 m/s
Terror Radius: 40 meters
Weapon: The Iridescent Scissors - For all the bonds severed.
POWER: WHAT ONCE WAS
From the old memories of being them, you know how they think, how they move, and know how to destroy them before they can even think.
Fog Markings:
Survivors who enter your Terror Radius will gain a Fog Mark if they do not have one already. This mark will remain until the survivor leaves The Fallen's Terror Radius.
Press the Power command to apply a Fog Marking to a survivor. When applying a Fog Marking, no damage is dealt to the survivor, and up to 3 markings can be applied in quick succession before The Fallen suffers a short fatigue. The Fallen can choose to apply three marks to a single survivor or spread the effect. After being out of The Fallen's Terror Radius for 45 seconds, survivors lose a Fog Mark.
Survivors with 1 Fog Mark suffer a 10% penalty to repair, healing, sabotage, and totem cleansing speed.
Survivors with 2 Fog Marks suffer a 5% action speed penalty.
Survivors with 3 Fog Marks suffer from the Blindness Status effect. Once all survivors receive at least 3 Fog Marks, the Dark Mist tremendously thickens and all survivors become Oblivious.
The Fallen can choose to further mark her prey for devastating effects with risk.
Survivors with 4 Fog Marks suffer from the Hindered Status effect and gain a 50% bonus to altruistic actions.
Survivors with 5 Fog Marks are Exposed. While survivors are within the Terror Radius The Fallen can Fog Reave to their location by holding the Active Ability command for 5 seconds while looking in their direction. Survivors being warped to will hear a sound effect. While in chase, survivors lose any negative effects. Once survivors are out of chase for 30 seconds, they will lose all their Fog Marks.
ADD-ONS:
- Common Add-Ons
- Mother's Sketches - Rose's mother loved sketching from the couch. Just the room, or the dog, and especially Rose. She always sketched Rose. (Slightly reduces the time it takes to Fog Reave.)
- Scissor Fragment - A fragment of the scissors that impaled Rose the night she faded from reality. (After 3 Fog Marks are applied, damage is dealt to the Survivor.)
- Broken Lens - Rose would always keep her items on her. She'd always use the same flashlight to blind those who'd try and hurt her friends. (The Blindness effect will persist for 30 seconds after the survivor loses the required Fog Marks.)
- Book of Campfire Songs - Songs Rose would often encourage the Survivors to sing. They were reluctant, but when they faced a new challenge, her songs would keep them from losing hope. (Tremendously increases The Fallen's Terror Radius. Survivors do not gain a Fog Mark from entering the radius. Gain 150% bonus Bloodpoints in the Deviousness category.)
- Uncommon Add-Ons
- Mother's Favorite Record - A list of her mother's favorite songs. Rose recalls waking up to a new one each day. (Moderately reduces the times it takes to Fog Reave.)
- Tiny Harmonica - Rose used to play this constantly as a kid. It annoyed her grandparents, but her mother encouraged her. (Considerably reduces The Fallen's Terror Radius. Moderately increases the time it takes for a Fog Mark to dissipate. Grants 150% Bonus Bloodpoints in the Deviousness category.)
- Contaminated Gauze - Gauze dirtied and bloodied from past injuries, like a hook in the shoulder. (Survivors with Fog Marks within The Fallen's Terror Radius while healing reveal their aura for two seconds.)
- Dead Bouquet - A bouquet of flowers Rose gathered in the Entity's Realm. Though they were dead, she still wanted to see some beauty in a place of darkness. (Reduces the time it takes to recharge What Once Was by 15%.)
- Scissor Handle - A broken off handle of the scissors that killed Rose. They tried to hide the evidence. (After 2 Fog Marks are applied, damage is dealt to the Survivor.)
- Rare Add-Ons
- Mother's Last Message - Her mother left a voice message. Unfortunately, Rose was out partying with friends when she should've been working on her 22nd birthday. Rose wishes everyday that she was doing what she should've been... that she had answered the phone. (Considerably reduces the time it takes to Fog Reave.)
- Rose's Survivor Diary - Rose wrote everyday about her experiences in the Entity's Realm, including all the people she met. At some point, all that was left was the one who betrayed her, and then... (Moderately reduces the fatigue duration after applying Fog Marks.)
- Forgotten Flute - Rose's flute that her students bought her on her 22nd birthday. She loved it, but at the same time, couldn't bear looking at it. She should've gotten it on that day, but she wasn't there. (Moderately increases The Fallen's Terror Radius. Slightly reduces the time needed for a Fog Mark to dissipate.)
- Tattered Map - A beat-up map back from when she was just a survivor. She always aided in anyway she could, and was an adept tracker. (Survivors with 5 Fog Marks will reveal their auras for 5 seconds when repairing a generator, cleansing a totem, or searching a chest.)
- Black Rose - A black rose, one she found right next to her as she first opened her eyes in the Entity's Realm. (Reduces the time it takes to recharge What Once Was by 25%.)
- Very Rare Add-Ons
- Mother's Bloodied Necklace - The crushing impact of the car snapped the necklace and blood splattered. It was a closed casket. Rose sketches her mother with the necklace and places it on the casket. (When survivors gain a third Fog Mark, Deep Wound is applied.)
- Viola The Violin - Her mother gave her the violin. Rose was never great at names and simply called it Viola. "Viola is a different instrument!" her mother exclaimed, and laughed. (Considerably increases The Fallen's Terror Radius. Moderately reduces the time needed for a Fog Mark to dissipate.)
- Bent Key - Constant use of the Dull Key to find her way towards her allies in each trial. She needed their support and safety. (For every survivor outside The Fallen's Terror Radius, an additional Fog Mark can be applied before being fatigued.)
- White Rose - Rose was given this from her botanist friend. She thought it was beautiful. It reminded her of the bonds she had made. (Survivors doing cooperative actions with Fog Marks will apply a single Fog Mark to all survivors involved with the action.)
- Ultra Rare Add-Ons
- "From Rose, To Mommy" - The box was labeled "From Rose, To Mommy." Her mother opened the box, and what laid inside was the most beautiful thing she'd ever seen. A red glass statuette, made with the help of her kindergarten teachers. It was the first thing Rose had ever made her. The statuette was of her mother, in her rocking chair, holding the baby Rose. (Survivors who enter The Fallen's Terror Radius instantly gain 2 Fog Marks. The Fallen can only apply one Fog Mark before being fatigued. When survivors leave The Fallen's Terror Radius, they lose all Fog Marks instantly.)
- Iridescent Rose - A perfect, pristine rose. The rose glowed with iridescent energy and warmth. It gave her comfort, like she was back in her mother's arms. (All survivors start the trial with 5 Fog Marks and do not lose them for 100 seconds.)
TEACHABLE PERKS:
- Like-Minded
- You were one of them, and so you know how they like to play. Survivors vaulting, healing, sabotaging, cleansing a totem, or repairing a generator within 24 meters make 100% more noise.
- Obsolete Obsession
- The obsession can almost feel the heat of your anger, instilling in them great fear, to the point in which they are unknowingly becoming the cause of their own allies' demise. For every 5 seconds the Obsession is within your Terror Radius, they will gain a token. Each time they complete a skill check, they will lose a token, and will apply -5% progression to the task. When completing a cooperative action, this effect is doubled.
- Hex: Hidden Messenger
- You were born from shadows that can't be pierced through. When the Hex is active, a timer starts. Once all generators are completed or the Hex totem is cleansed, you gain the Undetectable Status effect for a time equal to the time taken to cleanse the totem. If the totem is cleansed before all generators are completely repaired, for each Dull totem remaining, you gain 3% Haste for half of the time of the Hex effect.
SURVIVOR: DAMIEN AMBER
BACKGROUND:
Damien Amber was a quiet boy, who never knew what he wanted in life. He had tried many things, such as relationships, art, music, and gaming. Nothing appealed to him. Life seemed like a waste and dragged on day-by-day to him. The best he could do was do well in school, and please his parents and sister, Serena, but that never satisfied him.
One day, while he and Serena went hiking in the mountains, there was an earthquake. The quake made Serena stumble as the unstable rocks below her fell and made a hole in the cave they were in. Damien could barely catch her falling. As he began pulling her up, he felt the rock below him cracking. He closed his eyes, told Serena he loves her, and to their mom and dad, and with one swift movement, yanked Serena up and fell into the depths below himself. Serena screamed his name, but nothing.
Damien awoke and found himself in a strange place, one unfamiliar to him. As he walked through, he felt and impending doom. It dawned on him that he was finally somewhere where he felt he had purpose.
"Now... this is what I've been searching for."
Appearance: A mixed race average height boy, with curly, jet black hair. He wears a large gray hoodie and violet shirt with ripped black jeans. Around his left wrist, he wears a beautiful bracelet, with a purple sugilite gem in the center.
TEACHABLE PERKS:
- Oddest One Out
- You love the thrill of being chased, and would take all the heat in a blink of an eye for your allies. After completing any altruistic action (rescuing from a hook, taking a protection hit, healing other survivors, etc.) you become the Obsession. While you are the Obsession, you are Exposed, and gain a 5% vaulting speed bonus and 50% bonus to all other altruistic actions. For each altruistic action, gain a 25% bonus in Bloodpoints up to a max of 100% post-trial. When you are not the Obsession, you have a 25% penalty to all altruistic actions.
- Broken Rogue
- A close cut from death shows you how to be much more cautious. After being damaged 3 times, you become Broken for the remainder of the trial. While you are Broken, you leave no scratch marks.
- Aura Breaker
- Your odd and calm nature allows you to warp the aura reading of your enemies. After cleansing a totem, Aura Breaker activates. When the killer would see your aura or the Aura of your allies within 5 meters, your aura appears at 20 meters away from the intended location.
SURVIVOR: SERENA AMBER
BACKGROUND:
Serena Amber always desired knowledge. She would always try her best at anything she put her mind to. Serena always pushed her parents and brother, Damien, to do something with her for the opportunity to learn something new. She sought adventure into the unknown for anything she could absorb.
When she and her twin brother were 17, she convinced him to join her in a journey into the caves of a mountain to hunt for a certain purple sugilite she heard could be found there. As they hiked, an earthquake nearly caused Serena to fall into the depths below. Damien saved her, sacrificing himself.
Serena slowed down after that day. She blamed herself for what happened to Damien. She led the police to where Damien fell, however, no body was ever found. She held out hope for the rest of her 90 years that Damien survived somehow, as there was no trace of him to be found. When she died...
Serena found herself in a place unfamiliar to her, one that she didn't have any knowledge of. She looked down at herself and found herself to be... 17... again? Then, she looked up and saw something she could have never imagined.
"How long has it been, Serena?"
Appearance: A mixed race, slightly short girl with curly, dark brown hair and violet, pink, and lime green highlights. She wears a ripped, light pink crop top and shorts.
TEACHABLE PERKS:
- Machinery Enlightenment
- While studying machines, you learned how to easy correct your mistakes as they come. You start the Trial with a -10% progression penalty for Skill Checks to repair generators. For every successful Skill Check completed while repairing a generator, you receive a Token, up to 4 Tokens. Each Token grants you a 4% bonus progression for a successful Skill Check while repairing a generator. Missed Skill Checks apply an instant 10% regression. Great Skill Checks cannot be performed while using Machinery Enlightenment.
- Late Night Study
- Long nights with coffee by your side enhanced your study skills to their peak. When hiding in a locker, press the Active Ability command to see the Auras of all players in the Trial for 5 seconds. Your Aura will be revealed for 2.5 seconds. This perk has a cooldown of 60 seconds. You cannot use this perk with idle crows.
- Plan Ahead and Prepare
- Your observational skills have taught you what's best for any situation. When you are injured and in chase, press the Active Ability command to inflict the Hindered Status on yourself. For every 2 seconds that you do not go down transfers 10% progress to your recovery from the dying state.

NOTES:
- No, the killer's name does not come from my IGN/forum name lol. The Fallen is representative of someone falling from grace or falling to "the dark side." It just happened to match up, which was really nice and kinda funny lol.
- A lot of the add-ons for What Once Was do not correlate with each other because one, I created the add-ons only in name first, and then what they do in backwards order (from Iridescent to common), and two, I ran out of ideas halfway through lol.
- Oddest One Out is a perk idea inspired by @CL4P_TRAP_ER 's Odd One Out idea. Thanks!
- At some point in writing this (took 3 days lol) I forgot what What Once Was was supposed to even do, forgive me if I made a few mistakes that may make the power broken OP or completely useless.
