"ranks mean nothing..."
...is something people say just to invalidate others who actually gain points skillfully

"Skillfully"
I can rank up using a key to escape every time. Does that make me skilled?

They don't mean absolutely nothing, although they are more indicative of how much someone played in a given month rather than how good they are. Naturally people who play more tend to be better at the game, but it's not a hard set rule. Someone might only play a few matches a week but still be very good at the game. This is why we're moving away from the current ranking system for matchmaking.

no you cant not if youre not being altruistic or bringing light.....

My point was that people saying rank means nothing is a testament to how the ranking system is a flawed design. You could be the best survivor in the whole world and if you just stopped playing for a couple months, you would be at rank 15. Alternatively, you could be using old prayer beads spirit every single game with regular use of moris, and you would still probably make it to rank 1.
Rank means nothing because rank doesn't, and probably never will, accurately represent a players skill

Rank has been abused since forever. If I rescue two people off the hook and do one gen, I pip no matter what.
2 -
No, it's a fact.
Its literally a matchmaking tool, that is easily abused/worked in your favor if you know WHAT to do. Not how well you can do it.
Rank means nothing because:
A- it resets monthly. Because its not a rank. Its matchmaking.
B- it offers no reward or incentive, so its literally just to say you have this number on screen.
C- matchmaking is so wonky, and the ranks are so easily findable if you play to it, that they serve no purpose.
With all those points, and these potential (frequently occuring) situations:
-You can have a match with a rank 1 killer, rank 18 survivors, and still have the killer lose.
-Or have the level 18 survivor escape while the rank 3 gets downed in 25 seconds on first chase and gives up on hook.
It leaves us with the fact that rank means nothing. Because it never did. And if it DID mean something, the way matchmaking and pipping works, makes that irrelevant, because it's easily manipulated.

I have played Red ranks both sides forever, but now am reset to green because I haven't played in awhile
After revisiting Green ranks, I can say with certainty that they do not mean anything

So can we have a mod or dev confirm, that rank is literally just a matchmaking tool? Because it sounds like that is what you're eluding to. "Were moving away from rank as a system for matchmaking" sounds like that's what it was, and over time people have got so dead set in the idea that rank=your skill 100%.
Just for peace of mind? Everyone misinterprets rank (due to games having ranked standings and modes) for the fact that it just TRIES to BETTER match you with people that are AROUND your skill level.

ranks in that sense mean nothing in terms of getting matched together but in terms of that persons skill level i digress that it does because you cant just screw around and get a couple of unhooks or gens popped at rank 3 and expect a pip to get you to two or one you have to get in chases and not get downed there are certain criteria that must be met and when you get in games like the ones aforementioned there is no way that someone can. Its a blend of chance and skill. Ranks do mean something to me and always will there wouldnt be emblems and a point system if it didnt. You have to maintain your rank thats all deranking from not playing over time means. Yeah Ive had brown ranks be really good and have tier 3 perks but not always the case.....

As someone who has recently came back to the game, (about a year off) and starting over from rank 20 survivor and now I just hit rank 7. Id say the only difference is from 13+ ranks. They are noticeably not as good. Green ranks down to purple and then red, the games feel generally the same.

LMAO, tell that to the 5 yellow ranked killers that went against my red ranks SWF yesterday

Okay, I've been trying to explain this to people for so long.
And yeah, optimally if matchmaking wasnt super wonky right now it would be relatively closer games I terms of overall average skill, but with the emblems as is its not....perfect... lol.
Thank you for clarifying it though for me.

What I find funny is the amount of people who say "rank means nothing" and on the other hand if you state any opinions on the game's balance the first thing they want to know is "HAVE YOU PLAYED AT RANK 1 THO?"
Which is it??

As survivor you can easily farm hooks and not do anything else and get a lot of points.
Ive seen red rank survivors playing like a newbie.

Couple of questions:
Is it going live immediately with the 3.6 update or will it be released at a later date ?
Will everyone start at the same MMR ?
Is it set in stone that we will not be able to see our own MMR, ever ? Not even something like an end of season chart with our progress and comparison to other players (assuming seasons will still be a thing). I stated multiple times, but in my opinion not being able to see your own progress in a competetive game kinda defeats the purpose of playing ...

Both. Rank means nothing when it comes to being match with others of late (You'd have to live under a rock to not notice how wonky matchmaking has been), but if you didn't play in red ranks for the past few years to see the difference in play styles from low ranks to high ranks, through the eyes of veteran players, then that's a conversation you're butting into without first hand experience.

I've had games where I did nothing but save and I pip. It doesn't take skill.

If you are in a red rank SWF, you will win no matter what rank the killer is.

I wouldn't trust a ranking system that allows brand-new players to get to rank 1 in their very first season.
1 -
Rank / Pips are not synonymous with skill. I got to rank 1 back when the rank system was better than it is now, and I can say it's not an issue to get to rank 1 nowadays at all.

Currently rank means very little. I end up hitting red ranks pretty easily with stealth builds, but I can't loop very well. Hopefully the MMR system they're trying out will balance us all out a bit.

I don't know if Rank means nothing to Killer. I mean it is harder to pip as a killer and you are playing much harder competition as a Red Rank Killer.
So as we all know, survivors can get boosted by their SWFs, but the only thing that really could boost Killers was old Ruin and that is gone. So I would say a Red Rank killer, their Rank does indicate a certain measure of skill and competency in the game.
It is not always so for survivors because it is easier to pip as well to be boosted by SWF.

I'd be willing to replace ranks with hours played and who's in swf with who in tally screens.
I'd be much more imformative to know that I just got to go against 3 newbies and 1 epic farming gamer or was it 'always fun to go against' 3k hours 4 man swf squad with meta perks, toolboxes and ormund offerings.

With smurfing being a thing, ranks will never matter. The only thing that really changes with rank is just how much of the "meta" is used in any one game.
