Best Trapper Advice
I'm starting to play Trapper again. I understand why I quit. The quality of life improvements were a must, but he's just so left behind out of all the other killers, who can set up on the fly and can keep up with the pace of the game.
Every chase hurts the Trapper in a way no other killer is hurt. It hurts his time to set up, to become more than just an M1 killer.
So what are some strategies I can employ to help me out here?
I understand some basic trapping procedures; Try and loop toward your traps, try to centralize them, don't make them obvious, trap at corners of a loop, always keep at least one trap on you... What are some more advanced tips?

I won't go in-depth like I usually do, since I don't have time to do that in-general. But some basic things you'll need when using Trapper is Corrupt Intervention and Brutal Strength, two key perks that most Trappers use in-game. You might ask "why these two specific perks?", it's mostly because Corrupt Intervention is your stand-in for Pre-Ruin, since it stops early Gen-Rushing and gives you some time to set up your bear-traps, but not much of course since some Survivors will sneak around to the open Generators.
Brutal Strength is also a must on Trapper, since he's after all an M1 Killer... so creating a lot of "deadzones" on the map is entirely necessary for future chases in that Trial. For context, a deadzone is when you remove all or most pallets in a certain area of the map, creating a spot where most Survivors can be easily downed. Their only defense is the windows that might be there, and if there's no windows than they're easy pickings at that point.
some other basic bits of information you might be interested in
- When in a chase, you can try placing a bear-trap down to make the Survivor run away from that loop, once you're mid-animation you can release M2 and chase them right when they run from the loop. It's a strategy that some Trappers do to keep decent or pro-Survivors off of a strong loop.
- Trap around loops that have patches of grass, this will keep your traps more visible hidden, since good Survivors will keep their eyes on the loop itself and you in a chase, so putting them out in the open could deter Survivors from going there. It also keeps them from immediately spotting your traps to deactivate them, so that's another reason to keep them in grassy spots around loops like The Shack, Jungle Gyms, etc.
- Keep your traps hidden when trapping at windows. Depending on the loops structure, you should trap inside of the loop itself at the window or outside of it to keep its visibility at a minimal. Use your best judgement when doing this, since some windows might have grassy, while others are bare and easy to spot.
- Another tip when trapping at pallets directly is to not place your bear-traps right on-top of a pallet itself, if you trap under a pallet than a Survivor can just drop the pallet right on the bear-trap and still use the loop anyways. Make sure you place your traps on either side of where the pallet is dropped, just so the loop itself still becomes immobile.
A video i'd like you to watch if you struggle with basic tiles/loops
The video below is very informative for newer players on how to chase/loop around the most basic tiles that spawn in most Dead By Daylight maps. Learning from this video can give you an idea of where to place your bear-traps, so I highly advice you watch it to get an idea.
[side-note]
Some of the maps in this video have been reworked, or don't show these basic tiles in them. Newer maps such as Hawkins National Laboratory, Sanctum of Wrath, and Dead Dawg Saloon are also not present in this video. This video goes over several basic tiles that still exist in Dead By Daylights most prominent maps, any and all information from this guide is still useful for review. Please keep in mind that this video goes over the most common tiles that you'll find in Dead By Daylight, it's not a review about the maps themselves.

The best way to alleviate the time lost early game is to use Corrupt Intervention. This perk gives you more time to set up Traps in your spawn area without worrying about Gens getting popped as fast as they would get.
Fake Setting Traps also helps: this strategy basically consists of starting to place down a Trap in a Pallet Loop to scare the Survivor away from the loop and force them into an unsafe position.
- Starting to place down a Trap when a Survivor is about to stun you will also prevent you from getting stunned.
You should also place down Traps on pathways Survivors normally use, such as Main Building entrances. If you understand Survivors' Movements, you will probably know what they'll path like and therefore be able to predict their movement.

Question that may be useful to know the answer to: Does Fire Up affect trap setting speeds as it builds up stacks?

Short answer, no.
Unlike Spine-Chill, Fire Up! doesn't have any hidden action speed bonuses that the description leaves out, what's listed is what Fire Up! increases.

My advice would be to watch Otzdarva play Trapper, if you haven't already, and learn from what he's doing. He's probably the most well-known red-ranked Trapper main in the community, and he's very good if not the best at it.
