Selfish survivors
Lately I've run across a few teammates who after 3 gens done and 3 people still around somehow stumble upon the hatch...use the key to escape and never signal or try to let the rest of us know about it. This is next level selfishness and trash. So much for a team game this was supposed to be. It's worse than someone DCing. I think there should be some kind of punishment for survivors who pull this kind of crap.

While you can judge people for doing stuff like this, Survivors potentially abandoning each other for their own self-interest is part of the game's intended design. Surviving is supposed to be easier if you're willing to abandon the team when the possibility of escape arises, so for optimal Survivor play you have to resist that temptation.
So, dick/cowardly move, sure thing, something that should be punished/banned, absolutely not.

Sorry if this is news to you, but this was never a team game, teamwork can help YOU and you do it when its in your best interest.
But if it negatively impacts you, you dont have to partake in any of it.

DBD isn't a team game, it's a cooperative game, which isn't quite the same thing.
As for those survivors, yeah it sucks when it happens to you but I can also understand why they do it. I used to run around trying to get everyone together whenever I had a key and found the hatch, but more often than not it ended up getting me killed. Now I just hang around on the hatch as long as possible, hoping the other survivors will stumble across my position and join in the escaping fun, but if the killer gets too close, I just leave.

Thing is that without effective voice communication, we can't let each other know that we have found the hatch.
Admittedly I'll straight up ditch a team if NoED's proc'd or the killer is camping a hooked survivor. I did my job, you clearly didn't if NoED is active and I'm sorry, but I'm not risking my tender bootie for the slim chance of both of us escaping. Better one than none!

I mean, while I understand why people would be upset being left behind, sometimes there is just no way to quickly and safely get to others and make them understand you have a key and found the hatch.
I mean, it has happened to me, I had a key, found the hatch but had no idea where the others were. Sometimes I find them, sometimes not. A lot of those times, it's the killer that finds me and if I'm on my last hook, you bet I will just run to the hatch and use the key to escape, leaving the others behind.

Yeah depending on the context, sometimes it just better to escape than risk it. Since i seen a fair few games go south, due to everyone trying to save one person. Turning a game from a three man escape, to one person escape or just a total slaughter. Sometimes it just best to escape with what you have on hand.

Oh yes, a lot of times, because the survivors want to save that 1 person that is camped when the gates are already opened, things go very badly. Sometimes, that person is on the other side of the map, away from the gates. And yet, seems someone always tries to help and then gets hit by NOED. Then someone else thinks that the killer is busy with the downed person, tries to save, only to be also downed. And even if they manage to save that person that was hooked, no way he or she can make it to the gates if the killer decides to go after them. And there it is, 1 kill turns to 3, sometimes 4.
I have seen this happen over and over, so if that happens to someone, I just don't try to save, unless I'm playing with a friend and he's the one on the hook, so I feel bad and try to save, which most of the times ends up on either us both dying or me getting the save, but being downed and then camped to death. Silly things we do for friends :P

Not everything that is annoying is deserving of punishment. Rage quitting and finding an escape that is part of the game are two very different things. I'm not trying to start some drama, but as a survivor you don't owe it to your teammates to make sure they escape. It would be ridiculous for punishing survivors for completing their objectives, which is to escape. If the objective was to make sure everyone escapes then that would be different, but as others have said this is a cooperative game, and not a team game.
After playing for a while I have learned that too much altruism gets me killed 9/10. That's why kindred is my personal crutch perk. If the killer is staying close to the hooked survivor I wont give him another free down or trade hooks. Either get used to playing a little selfish or get used to dying a lot.

While I understand that this is frustrating, I don’t think there’s any reasonable way to punish it.

Ehh, punishing teammaster for trying to ensure their own survival ? Should we also punish survivor doing gens while killer facecamps since they aren't helping their teammate ? Sounds pretty unreasonable really. Each survior's objective is to survive by any means necessary (while following DBD's official rules=no griefing etc). Beiing selfish is one of the strategies.

If I have a key and am going against a decent killer that I feel in danger of being sacrificed around, and I found the hatch, I'm going to take it if I don't know where survivors are and can easily get them over to where I am without being found out.
As some have said already, this isn't a team game. It's a game where the whole premise is *based around* sometimes being selfish. These are just random survivors that don't know each other, and it's supposed to have that same atmosphere where not every random person is going to always be looking out for other people. Just like IRL.
So no. No punishment for people who do things like that, for the same reason there shouldn't be punishments for people who gen rush or camp or tunnel or anything else that people complain about: it's a legitimate playstyle. Therefore, shouldn't be punishable.

If there are 4 people left in the trial, hatch doesn't spawn until all gens are done.
If there are 3 people left, 4 gens must be done.
That aside, if they brought or found a key - sure, why not - They can use their items as they wish, aren't obliged to scour the map for other survivos, and are essentially spending 6-7k BP to escape.

That's how game is designed to be, but I understand why you are angry about it.

After 3 hours of trying to complete a challange by escaping with x survivor after getting camped and tunneled, yeah, i will take every possibility to escape without a thought about my teammates

Not sure how it happened but I distinctly recall there were 3 of us left and 2 gens since the 4th got hooked a 2nd time and suicided. Was at Asylum against a GF. And the next thing I see after the sacrifice is the obsession douche exited the trial and left the meg and I to die.

The hatch will not spawn with 3 people left and 2 gens done - It is impossible.
