I have a question about killer ranking

I am red rank killer on ps4 mostly rank 1-2-3. My understanding was that once I get into red rank that would mean my skills are also red rank level. However that’s not the case. Most of the time I get destroyed. Don’t get me wrong I don’t mind get good. Would it be benefitial to have more ranks? So it would be tough to reach red rank. Is the new skill/ rank system going to match me with higher skill teams regardless?
