If matchmaking isn't the highest priority, it should be
Honestly it's the main thing that makes me want to quit this game. At the start, it was a lot of fun. Running and hiding from killers, learning everything there is, etc. - the game is a blast
Then I played killer. MY FIRST GAME AS A KILLER HAD A RED RANK PLAYER IN IT. Since then it's waffled from either horrible MM like that game, or proper MM where I play around my skill level. So I chalked it up to some bugs and moved on.
Last night I played 7 games as killer. I was green rank, I think 14 but I kept deranking. Every single game I was either the lowest rank, or there was 1 person at my rank with the rest of them in red ranks. I find it hard to believe that when there is 43,000 people online that it can't find a good match for me. I do not have the thousands of hours to memorize these maps. I do not have the DLCs to get the best perks. I do not have the bloodpoints to get the perks I need to compete even if i did have the DLC. If this was another game based solely on skill like a shooter, I might have a chance against better players since we all start on an even level. But this is more like a trading card game, where you need to grind or buy your way to the best deck (collection of perks). Imagine if hearthstone players had new players playing against Legend rank players. Do you think anyone would stick around? Why would they put themselves through hours and hours of frustrating gameplay until they're finally at an even playing field with their opponents? Why would they bother with post-game lobbies that trash talk them and call them a f** for playing with NOED like me? Should I use Unrelenting instead??? I don't have BBQ and Chili and Ruin and all the other good perks, what do you expect?
I get that veteran players want to show new players the game and play with them, but they should be going against people of their own skill level. Apparently from what I've heard that's how it's supposed to work.. but just doesn't? This should be a top priority if player retention is a goal at all.

Match making is a big problem I agree. Theres a few things I want to point out though:
Lets say matchmaking is completely perfect and you get matched up with people at your skill level. Youre going to hit the same wall regardless, it would just happen later instead of sooner and right around where you are now. If youre green youre going to start playing against purple soon and they know tge game well enough to run you around and make tge game difficult. Youll have a few games that are good and then a few that are bad and youll sit like that until you do have those perks and understanding of tge game.
Those messages you get will never end. If they bother you change your settings so you cant get messages from strangers. If you arent running noed theyll find something to complain about.
Both things happen to everyone even when matchmaking was working, and i uninstalled more than once for both reasons. There are people in green ranks that are good enough to be r1 and purposefully stay back even.
All that said, yes, they do need to fix mm. They told us theyre working on it 5 months ago and anytime its brought up they point back to the post that was made 5 months ago like that answers tge concern 😒

Yeah that's a good point. Maybe with the game's speed at which you unlock teachable perks, the ranking should be slower. Not in terms of pipping, but that there's a rank 30 or 40 at which players start. As with other games you're right, I'll hit that wall and not progress as fast, but this was just straight de-ranking hell. Only one of those games did I get more than 1 kill (the last one before the night), and the rest all entity displeased. Online Matchmaking tends to bring people to a 50% win/loss ratio, but this is just nothing but "losses".

Im a firm believer in more ranks. We wont ever see it but i bet the new system is going to have hundreds. Its all going to be under the hood though so you wont know what your skill level is

That's a big issue right now, MM is wonky as hell and providing terrible games just to make sure they're somewhat timely.
You'll probably be happy to know they are working on an MMR system instead of the current rank based system we have now. It's better for competitive games and should hopefully match us with more equally skilled people instead of people who are purposefully farming their rank/deranked through time. I find it funny though, they implement competitive based solutions/baind-aids for this game yet will die on a hill saying it's a casual game. hmmm 🤔

I'm a rank 13 now, was a rank 9. All I get on ps4 is red ranks. If I play 10 matches, 7-8 of them are red rank, and the other 2 are a mix of red and purple, and mostly SWFs or all at least running comms. How do I know you ask? Because the morons sometimes send me invites to there group chats. No BS. I wouldn't mind if it would return the favor every once in a while and put me in with 12-16 rank, so I could have chill, relaxing games, but it just doesn't work that way. It's a balls to the wall sweat fest, and if you make 1,just ONE mistake, it's G A M E O V E R.

Honestly, the ranking system probably works as intended. Given how long queueing used to take, the devs have done amazing work to mitigate all the negative elements involved in finding players that can play.
You might see only a number for your ranking system, but you don't know what kind of background information is being processed, if at all. What I mean is that your player id may have a variety of "rankings" or other flags, such as a win/loss streak, region you're playing from, what your performance is like overall, and especially how long your queue time is taking during a given wait.
I think we will all be surprised when BHVR unveils their new MMR system. I don't think it's going to be another conventional system like what we've already seen before, but I suspect it is enhanced with rankings and processes that are taking place already.
You give the rank number and it's color way too much credit. If you assume your entire performance and match making revolves solely around a solitary number, especially in a game developed by a company that calls itself "Behaviour", then you might be in for a surprise this year.

Like i said, my first game as a killer had a red rank player, a purple, and a green player. Before that I had only played a few games with friends in the "kill your friends" mode. It's clearly broken. If there's a hidden ranking then it's WAYYY off because these players have hundreds/thousands of hours and are way better than me.

That sounds like a sampler platter. That could have been intentional, given your game has no killer history. Perhaps survivor and killer ranks affect one another in the background?
I think a rainbow is a reasonable first ever match in any game that matches players together.
Given how little killer you play, I think you have less information on how to intuit the rankings, but I'm not a dev, either. Maybe this game is very unfair to newer players, but it has not slowed new arrivals from ascending the ranks. I think this game presents inherent challenges that aren't necessarily favorable to newer players who don't recognize some of the nuances right away.

That would be reasonable, but my survivor was rank 20 as well- i'd only played "kill your friends" a few times which doesn't rank you up. Given that there was a another gray rank player in the match, what I think what happens is this:
It looks for a player in a similar rank to you. Once it finds it, it adds the party and starts searching for another player if need be. For a 4 man stack of 3 red ranks and 1 gray player, it might search for a red killer first, but failing to find one will go to the next player till it finds a gray, and then makes the match.
That's all just a guess though. It clearly doesn't work on a hidden MMR right now, or if it does, it's broken and allows completely new players to play with veterans, which shouldn't happen.
