make use of platforms and a grappling hook, also, if you want to cheese Skeletron, place some blocks above you and use a yoyo, you'll whittle him down and he can't shoot at you
if you decide to play with the Calamity mod, avoid the Abyss like the plague if you're afraid of the ocean

Pretty much all of the bosses can be beat easily by circling them, and pretty much all arenas can be made by putting 2 or 3 long straight platforms in the sky.

You need to work your way up to the different bosses, there's a fairly linear progression to follow. Eye of Cthulu and King Slime are the easiest, then after the Eye you want to do Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulu, depending on whether your world is Crimson or Corruption. Queen Bee I think is next difficulty-wise, although you don't have to do her it can be a good idea for things like the Bee Gun. Regardless of whether you choose to fight her or not, I would suggest doing some exploring in the underground Jungle and getting some honey, because you can use it for regeneration during the Skeletron fight.
With regards to Skeletron specifically:
- You want to have maxed out your health (20 hearts), especially if you're playing on Expert Mode (which I would recommend, since bosses drop unique loot in Expert Mode), and probably your mana too if you're using any kind of magic weapon.
- Then you'll want to build an arena to fight him in using long rows of wooden platforms above the dungeon entrance, so that you can jump around and circle him while you're fighting. You can also include a pool of honey and/or a house for the Nurse as part of the arena, for quick heals during the fight.
- You'll also want to have mobility items - Hermes/Flurry/Sailfish/Dunerider Boots at a minimum (all do pretty much the same thing), but Rocket Boots will be very useful if you happen to have found the Goblin Tinkerer by that stage. A Cloud in a Bottle will also probably help.
- Make sure you summon him at nightfall (7:30pm) to allow maximum time to fight him.
- During the fight, if you are playing on Expert Mode, aim to take out his hands first, as his head is far more vulnerable after the hands are gone. After he loses one hand, he gains the ability to shoot skulls at you, so you'll want to eliminate the hands around the same time so that you don't have to deal with the skulls and his remaining hand for too long.
The Gamepedia wiki is a great source of information, and even contains in-depth strategy guides for all the different boss fights. I'd highly recommend using it as a reference tool. https://terraria.gamepedia.com/Terraria_Wiki
