The 1st minute of surviving
I typically look for the nearest gen and begin working on it asap. The killer often hears this and looks for me.
Is this what you do? Do you scout prior to beginning gen repairs? To not end up being the first chase?
Or do you look for chests, totems first? Maybe get some quality locker-hiding time in?
Just curious.

Most times I'll start looking for totems since alot of killers will check gens first. If I start right next to a chest I'll do that. I tend to go opposite direction of my teammates so when I do start a gen it's away from them to avoid a 3 gen.

I usually go work on a gen and stealth the killer when they come check on it. However, if I see a totem, that totem's the priority.

I usually check the surroundings briefly for the best escape route before I start the gen. When the killer spots me I don't give them an easy hit by running into a bad spot on accident.

I try to figure out where I spawned in relation to everything else, if others spawned with me (and if so what they're doing), and where the gen that's closest to the middle of the map is. If I spawned in a corner I usually won't do that gen since I try to get the central gen(s) done as early as possible. I also try to avoid doing gens with others early in the game so if we all spawned together, I'll run off to spread out.

I use Deja Vu to make my way to the middle of the map to prevent the team from being 3-gen'd, and I use Streetwise to make my toolbox last 0.01 seconds longer. If the Killer shows up I try to stealth nearby with Stakeout so that if I'm not found for 15 seconds then my next skill check will give me a 2% bonus instead of a 1% (and I don't even need to be Great at it). I run Boil Over in case I do get caught though, just so that I'm a minor inconvenience to the Killer (I never actually wiggle free). /s
I hope the Trial Warmup gets implemented and gives bonus Bloodpoints to the poor sap who gets found first.

The optimal strategy is jump on a gen and never get of it untill absolutelly necesarry
But that does require all survivors to be pretty good at getting chased
If your not confident in your chase abilities it's probably better to stay out of sight for the first killer patrol

I generally move to the killers spawn area and do gens. Not only does it reduce three gen situations but it also gives you a lot more time peacefully working on gens. That or centre gen depending on map. The harder the center gen the sooner I'll be trying to get it. I often run inner strength so an initial totem is also good if I find it.

1st thing I do is pressure middle gens and engage killer in chase if found.
If I'm having a bad survivor night, I may stealth when the killer approaches then jump back on the gen when safe.

I usually go around and look for totems or search chests, or take up a vantage point to see who the Killer is. I'll also sometimes tap the first gen I find to see if the Killer has Ruin!

I usually just work on the gen nearest to me. I usually don't try and stealth around the gen if the killer comes mostly because most my enjoyment of this game comes from the killer and survivor interactions.

I tend to try find a totem first, just so I have my Inner Strength active for emergency heals. After that, I'll find a nearby gen, and then scout out more totems just in-case of NOED, or other Hex perks.

Unless like two other people are with me, I do not commit to a gen until I have some more information. My first priority is to ascertain who the killer is, and generally where they are at. I will usually commit to something low-impact like a totem or a chest, ideally far enough away from a generator to ensure I'm not in immediate danger if the killer sweeps the area. Or, if the killer shack is nearby, I will usually check it to see what's in there, deal with any totems and chests, and clear out the basement if I feel it is safe to do so.
Once I know where the killer is, or I see someone getting injured/chased, I will quickly find a gen to work on. Priority is the center, since that's usually the hardest one to get, and it helps big-time to prevent a three-gen issue later.

I usually go straight to the nearest gen. It's a risk since the killer is probably on his way there, but sometimes you get lucky and it pays off.
Then I go to the second one, because the first is blocked by Corrupt Intervention.
Then the third for the same reason.
Then the fourth.

I always try to do what I call High Priority Gens which are located in the center of the map. I feel like it helps prevent 3 gen situations in end game and will force the Killer to travel farther when patrolling gens. Unfortunately, I think I am the only one in Solo that does this.

I run inner strength. So I look for a totem nearby first. Then hop on a gen.
If I get chased first, great. It's the most fun part of playing survivor.

Eh, I just go to the first gen I see, if I get chased, I get chased.

Personally, since I use deliverance, I try my best not to get caught first. But it doesn't stop me from doing gens as soon as I get into the match. I also use bond, so it gives me a lot of information like a survivor who has spawned nearby and is working on a gen, so I join them instead of working on the one nearest to me. When two people are working on one gen, there's a 50-50 probability of getting caught first, with deliverance, I would definitely take that option xD
Bond has a good aura reading range, so I can also see if someone's getting chased, it helps me work on gens without much to worry.
Only sometimes when I have a bad day like getting caught first in matches back to back and getting downed first, not being able to use deliverance, I play stealthy. But yeah, in 90% of the matches I'm able to use my deliverance successfully.
Also with corrupt intervention, I look for totems and chest rather than doing gens, unless someone is working on one already, so I join them. At rank 1, my aim is to get as much bloodpoints as I can in one match, so I use all strategies at my avail.

For your best interest,
DO NOT DO ANY OF WHAT PEOPLE DO ABOVE!!
THEY ARE PLAYING SURVIVOR WRONG!!
The correct way of playing survivor is the following:
you must IMMEDIATELY start working on a generator and leave other non-necessary stuff for later such as opening chest, cleansing totem or in certain cases unhooking a teammate. you also must realize that there are 4 survivors spawn in a trial and the killer can ONLY chase 1 survivor at a time which means one of the 4 of you has to get ready to get chased whilst working on a gen. Its extremely necessary for your teammates to be working on generators while someone is being chased.
Play with your friends its so much rewarding!
Have Decisive strike, Unbreakable, Dead Hard and Adrenaline ( or Borrowed Time ) Those perks are the hands down most powerful perks in the game.
Trust me, trust me, trust me if all 4 of you did the above mentioned playstyle you WILL survive 80% of your games.

Basically.
Just do the gens, doesn't matter if you're hit or hooked, you'll get extra lives.
The only thing holding most survivors back is that they overthink the mechanics.

I mean, what I've described -- which I would characterize as a minimum of early-match caution -- has gotten me to red ranks consistently, so it's not "wrong" in that sense. There's not some monolithic right way to play; if you are winning games and/or pipping, you are playing survivor right.
I agree with what you're saying, more broadly, in that if you're spending a ton of time not working on gens, you're not being efficient or useful. I would never advocate running a full circuit around the map looking for totems or anything like that, but if you can avoid being found by the killer and then commit to a gen, that's a viable way of playing.

Exactly. Your survival depends on a lot of factors, most of which aren't in your control. Every trial isn't going to be the same. The ultimate point of this game is to not survive every trial, but to have fun in any given situation, trying your best to survive against all odds, regardless of what the outcome is.

I hate you

If all survivors spawn fairly near to each other then everyone just doing the first gen they see is asking to be three gen’d. You definitely want to pressure gens early as much as possible but you also want to make it simple for your teammates. Do central gens and unsafe gens first. Split up.

I start as fast as possible to repair a generator, because waiting 30s for a killer to maybe pass you costs you 30s generator progress. This can also cost you the whole generator, if he comes back with "Pop". And if he finds me first I can practise to juke him.

I don't touch generators that early. ESPECIALLY if I spawn next to one.
I've also been hit by NoED because of others more times than I can count, so i try to do as many totems as I can.

since i pretty much always run Plunderer's Instinct and Ace In The Hole, i usually locate a chest first and then start working on gens - preferably when the killer has eigther just checked on it or someone else entered a chase.

I visually locate my nearest gen, then go find the totem in my area and do it. If the Killer hasn't patted the gen closest to me by that point, I just hop on. They are probably preoccupied with someone else. Too many Killers complain about gen rushing. Not enough survivors do totems. Nice solution to both whilst not likely being the first to get facecamped. 👍️
