New Licensed Chapter - THE SHINING
THE SHINING Dead by Daylight Chapter
New Killer – Jack Torrance – “The Caretaker”
Lore:
John Daniel Edward Torrance wasn’t the greatest father or husband, but he cared for Wendy and Danny as much as he could. That was until, of course, the powers of the Overlook Hotel deranged him, driving him to seek out his wife and son with an axe to “teach them a lesson”. Wendy injured Jack and attempted to flee with their son, who had a remarkable gift of premonition that the hotel wanted. Driving Jack to chase his son through the maze to obtain the gift, known as The Shining, Jack fought off the demons in his head and momentarily lost the chase, and his way, in the maze. Cold and alone, the voices in his head retook control as a dark fog closed around him and he was swallowed by the entity.
In a new realm and with refreshed bloodlust, he was gonna teach them a lesson alright, he will teach them all not to mess with Jack Torrance.
Appearance:
Jack Torrance appears as he does in the Stanley Kubrick movie, wearing a red fleece over a blue flannel, jeans and worker’s boots. His hair is matted with sweat and his eyes are crazy, perhaps even glowing red, as a way to get around whether or not they obtain the rights to Jack Nicholson’s likeness they can just go for a generic crazy looking man.
Height: Normal
Movement speed: 115%
Terror radius: 32 metres
Weapon: Madman’s axe
The Caretaker wields a heavy-duty fire axe, designed for chopping up both firewood, doors and survivors, the axe features a polished wooden handle and a heavy metallic head.
His attack animation is a crazed horizontal swing, before he wipes the blood off with a firm two handed shake.
Animations:
The Caretaker has been warped and twisted by the powers of both the Overlook hotel and the entity, and as such carries himself with an air of total insanity. The Caretaker hobbles around the map, as he does in the film from his injuries, and breathes heavily releasing clouds of cold fog, grunting as he moves.
His damaging and vaulting actions are the same as most normal killers (i.e trapper).
When opening lockers, he smashes the axe next to the head of survivors and grabs them. Perhaps even exclaiming “HERE’S JOHNNY” as he does so.
Power: The Overlook’s curse
Twisted by the mysterious hauntings of the overlook, The Caretaker combines the brute strength of a madman and the ethereal to haunt survivors with visions and weaken them.
Power Button (M2) – REDRUM
The Caretaker charges up a powerful attack over 3 seconds, and then lunges forward 5 metres, bringing his axe down in a vicious overhead slam. Hitting walls, pallets, vaults or loops causes a powerful blast from the strike, making survivors on the other side scream, become exposed for 3 seconds and suffer from Cabin Fever.
REDRUM can be used to break pallets.
Passive – Cabin Fever
The curse of the Overlook passes from The Caretaker onto those he hunts, haunting them the same way it deranged the once caring father.
Survivors that are hit directly or indirectly by REDRUM are affected with Cabin fever until they are either downed or perform the Snap out of it interaction. Cabin Fever is similar to the doctor’s madness, but focused more on weakening survivors and limiting their options.
Survivors will be instantly downed if they enter lockers, as a torrent of blood will pour from it.
Survivors will scream and become oblivious for 10 seconds if they fast vault, revealing their location.
Survivors will periodically see The Twins (from the movie) also visible to The Caretaker. Survivors will be injured if they walk directly into the Twins.
Perks:
Bash your brains in
After hooking a survivor, lose your terror radius and red stain for 3/5/8 seconds. (120 second cooldown)
All work and no play
Successful hits on survivors within the first 5 seconds of a chase gain a token. Each token slightly increases vault speed and recovery movement speed after hitting a survivor. At 8 tokens, the next survivor downed can be instantly mori’d. Performing break actions removes a token.
Stay forever
Survivors opening the exit gate has their aura revealed to the killer, who also has their aura revealed to the survivor for 3/4/5 seconds after. (60 second cooldown)
Mori:
The survivor begins to crawl away on their back, facing the caretaker. The Twins are in the background watching. The Caretaker slams them in the chest with the axe, and pulls it back out with effort. He then raises the axe above his head as the survivor flinches in fear. He brings it down and decapitates them.

New Survivor – Wendy Torrance
Lore:
Wendy Torrance went missing alongside her husband Jack during the winter season at the Overlook Hotel, with only their son Daniel surviving. What the newspapers didn’t know is that she successfully injured and fought off her deranged husband, giving Danny enough time to hide in the Overlook’s maze. After injuring and escaping Jack who had cornered her in the bathroom, Wendy fainted before she made it to the lobby. When she awoke, the Overlook looked different- it was older, more worn, and there was fog. She knew her fight for survival wasn’t done yet when she heard the smashing of an axe on wall, growing louder. At least Danny was safe.
Appearance:
Wendy Torrance wears her iconic outfit – pictured above.
Perks:
Mother’s Shine
All mother’s have a little bit of the shine. It’s what tells them where that missing toy is or why their child is upset.
See the aura of all survivors in the killer’s terror radius. Also see the auras of items left on the ground.
Close Call
Survivors that cause the killer to miss an attack when within 3 metres of them gain a burst of speed. Ignores exhausted effect but causes exhausted effect afterwards for 60 / 50 /40 seconds.
Stay away!
Successfully stunning the killer causes the survivor to leave no scratch marks or have no aura for 3/5/8 seconds. 60 second cooldown.
Cosmetics:
Wendy also comes with some other outfits from the movie:
- Her original outfit but with the dressing gown
- Her yellow jacket and scarf
- Her red and blue dress
New Map – The Overlook Hotel
The dilapidated remains of the once admirable Overlook, this map features 2 floors and an outdoor area. Most similar to Ormond in design, the Overlook has a snowy outdoor area consisting of a small hedge maze, courtyard and backyard with a shed and snowmobile. Around these areas are sections of junk, hedges and topiaries that make up the loops. Like the Oni’s map, the topiaries turn to face you when you look away (from the book). The indoor house is the majority of the map, consisting of the foyer, ballroom and kitchen on one floor, with the kitchen’s freezer leading to the killer’s basement. The second floor is the hotel rooms including the Torrance’s room and room 237.

Also as a side note, given the inclusion of Legendary skins in the game now. Patrick Bateman from American Psycho could be a perfect swap out for Jack Torrance since they both use the same weapon. The twins would just be replaced with something else during the Cabin Fever affect, which could be renamed insanity or something.
