How should I effectively use DS?
This question has been on my mind for a while and I finally decided to ask it: how should I effectively use DS?
I bought Laurie a while ago, really excited about finally having access to the single most praised and apparently OP survivor perk in the game. But after using it for a while, I must say it felt really underwhelming. The first 20ish games, I never even got to use it. The one time I did get to use it, the killer continued going after me and killed me anyways.
What I can say is that most killers I run into avoid DS by not picking you up, even if you don't have the perk equipped. Therefore, I feel like just the existence of the perk is enough to help you out, you don't actually need to have it equipped. The only time the mere existence of the perk doesn't help you is if there is no obsession in the game so the killer knows for a fact that nobody has DS and they can tunnel you to their heart's content.
I have looked into this before and I read that you're not supposed to let anyone heal you after unhooking, as this basically wastes half of DS's duration, but even then I rarely seem to go down within a minute after being unhooked and if I do, they simply leave me on the ground.
Am I doing something wrong or is the fact that this perk exists and killers have to be cautious about it the reason it is considered to be so good?

It's pretty much the last thing you said. If it exists, the killer has to be extremely mindful of when they last saw you get unhooked. If there's an obsession, the killer has to act like everyone has DS, or else you're not going to be happy when you're getting stabbed.
As a killer, I find it's most effective on me when the player doesn't act like they have it. By this I mean, if you jump into a locker so you get it for free you're announcing to me you have it, so I know to not pick you up/open the locker. If you hook rush, I can tell something's amiss since injured people generally don't do that unless they're under pressure. But if I'm chasing someone else when you get unhooked, I down that person and hook them, and then just happen to find you next...I'll just think you're unlucky, and am far more likely to pick you up (because I swear a minute is three minutes if I'm not meticulously tracking it)...the problem is this is the scenario where it's extremely frustrating to GET DSed...it's not tunneling since someone else was hooked, and I just happened to find you next, it's not like I hunted you down specifically and ignored a third person.
As a survivor...I've ran it like twice. I don't use teachable perks on survivor and I'm not a huge fan of Laurie so just haven't had the games to really try it that much, so I can't comment too much on that end.

If you pair ds with unbreakable it doesn't matter if they slug you or pick you up, you get away. But unless you find yourself getting tunneled quite often, you are probably better off using a different perk.
