Pretty sure if you don't have the character you'll be SoL on earning the cosmetic.

Later on they might release it into the shop in which case you can just buy it then but who knows for certain.

My educator guess is it works the same as the rift. If you unlock a cosmetic piece for a character you don't own, you are still credited with it, but don't have access to it. Whenever you buy the character, the cosmetic should automatically unlock for you.

I don't own Deathslinger, but I went to his catalog in the shop, selected Show All Items under Filters and it says I own it!

So yes, you get the cosmetics regardless of if you own him or not.

Yes, you do. It'll be added to your inventory and you'll be able to use it if you ever decide to unlock the Deathslinger.

The login reward is different from the crown. It's the fancy Deathslinger outfit you'll see in the event trailer. You don't need to play the Deathslinger to get that outfit, you just need to login. You will need to play him if you want the crown, though.
