psychological horror and missed elements

And as messed up as it would be to some people. I'd love to play as my great grandfather in this game (auschwitz survivor)


I think that alot of horror elements fade on repetition. Like gore for example.

But repulsion and diverting expectations can have real lasting staying power in horror.

Emotional distress by decision making is another thing the saw chapter missed on given the plot of the movies... most of them had you screwing over other people to live. It was really messed up.


I wonder if dbd will ever go back to its horror roots and add some of these deeper shock and awe elements

    It'd be nice, but there are two main problems with such a grindy horror game, such as DbD and the concept of horror itself.

    1) PSYCHOLOGICAL horror is very personal, and often really subtle. My best examples for this are Lovecraft's works and the fear of the unknown, and the Aussie horror flick Wolf Creek.

    The Cthulhu Mythos works because we literally cannot comprehend what these eldritch beings are, therefore it scares us because we cannot know. Putting something like this into a game means that there has to be a way that it is able to be comprehended, which is why we've never had a good Call of Cthulhu game, outside of pen and paper RPG's.

    Wolf Creek on the other hand is terrifying because of it's relatable, and minor spoilers but there are only three people who are killed throughout the entire movie. In 99 minutes, there are only three deaths. And they all happen in the last twenty minutes. How is it scary? Simple. Because the killer of this film doesn't act how most people would expect and seem relatively normal until the shows his true colours.


    2) Repetition and over-exposure dull the senses. When we all first started playing, hearing that heartbeat was one of the most terrifying things in the game. Now? Part of me is actually happy to hear it because I know where the killer is roughly, sometimes WHO it is and the fact that it isn't a stealth killer so I have more than half a second's warning. We know most of the map layouts to an extent, so we're not running wildly hoping for something to save us.
