Mystery Boxes no longer give Items

I've noticed for the past year or so, that I haven't been able to find any items from mystery boxes, and especially now with the event items, where they're very rare to get anyway, it'd have been great if you also got them from mystery boxes. But ever since I noticed it I've been keeping an eye out and for the past year I haven't seen a single item pop out. Is that a bug or has that just been changed at some point? I'm playing on PC.
