Harssment, and how it defines this game

It's the main DBD feature, and it's encouraged by the DBD team, because it's been 4 years and have done nothing about it.

I am honestly a fool thinking the devs can do something about it. It's a toxic waste plant of gaming.

I had a friend that just started playing, but since he failed his first game (he was survivor) he was called a f****t and a person that ruins everything and should have known better (y'know, his first ever game) He promptly refunded the game after the fact. I told him this game was not meant for people who wanted to have legitimate fun, and made the right choice I feel. The other players of that game did a really good job of what represented this game for what the community and devs celebrated for 4 years, and most likely many more, how badass of you.

you're right. I'm pretty sure devs are riding this "toxic game fame" DbD gained, you know Ace's troll skins, well most of the newer skins actually...

Majority of the toxicity stemmed from SWF. You have friends who will undoubtedly take the side of their friend when one of them starts acting up in post game chat due to being upset about something.

This continues with groups who purposely go out of their way to play toxic and annoy the other teammates or the killer. This created a mentality for a lot of killers that survivors are pieces of crap so they begin to play more and act more "toxic" towards perceived SWF or any form of perceived toxicity.

It's just a cycle that continues; Survivors hate killers cause they think they are toxic tunneling try-hards, Killers expect every group to be a toxic sweaty try-hard swf, and the poor solo queue players or new players get the brunt of both ends.

It's toxic gameplay and toxic behavior.

There's plenty of online games out there that have great communities. It's a sad fact that most of dbd seems to be populated with extremely immature players. More often than not it's probably just kids from troubled homes taking their day out on everyone else.

True what someone above posted. The toxicity is part of the brand at this point. I just like horror games and there aren't many out there.

Tbh I only play this game because it's the only interesting game out on Xbox one atm. I've been kicking around the idea of trading it in for a different console. PS4 has way more newer horror games and switch has a lot going for it too.

It would be great if someone took dbd and f13 and combined them into an asymmetrical horror game that was actually fun, casual, and worked.

What so you mean? Have you played other multiplayer games that have chat or a mic system? I used to play on minecraft serves quite a bit when I was younger and the amount of kids that'll write crap to you is insane. CoD is full of people screaming at each other and every other PvP shooter game I've played has been pretty much the same but to a lesser degree. Hell even games like Destiny which I played for a while, you can do raids together and people get really pissed off at you if you don't know the steps, have bad gear or it's your first time. I actually quit Destiny because the raid system was so crap (mainly) and people would freak out over the least little thing (secondary).

If you're looking for actual pictures or videos or something I have none. I don't know about you but I don't actively keep videos or screenshots of people getting mad in video games. Heck even in DBD where I enjoy salty messages I'll delete them after a couple days.

Sorry to not give any material evidence, but talking from a long time of multiplayer experience just try to play the following games: Dota, LoL, Rainbow6, Counter Strike, Valorant, Overwatch, L4D, Killing Floor, Mortal Kombat, Castle Crushers, Pes Coop, Sea of Thieves, Minecraft, Rust, Mordhau and others....and you will see the evidence yourself. In every of those games I’ve struck on players wishing me a terrible death, insults and telling me to kill myself, either when I was still a beginner and fresh to the game or when I was having a bad game. This game is not subpar to those, but at least it’s very limited to the post game chat, something that you can easily keep hidden and especially can be left as soon as you like without consequences on your game progress, because it’s only postgame.

if you prefer to not have to deal with toxic people, why arguing with them or even reading their bullshit? Sometimes the best thing to do is to ignore and don’t answer, not even saiying gg,

PvP shooters are undoubtedly worse than DBD. They're not even in the same ball park when it comes to toxicity.

Sadly, toxicity just seems to be a widespread disease in pvp gaming. I wish there was some easy solution but the fact is it comes down to personal accountability for each and every single individual in each and every single match across each and every single game. Sorry to hear about your friends first impression of the game.

I have yet to have someone go out of their way to message me detailing just how bad I am and what exactly they are doing to my mother in any PvP shooter. There is a difference between casually calling that shite out through a mic and actually taking the time to source someone's gamertag/username, type out the entire message, and send it to them in such a manner that they don't get banned for abuse. That alone tells me the different levels of toxicity.

I literally have a video saved of someone who got banned from DBD after I reported them for calling my friend the f-slur.

Report and move on, someone giving you crap at end game is not harassment, it is rude but not even close to harassment, and I bet they didn't report either.

Online Video games are far from safe spaces. There are a lot of mean people playing them, if your friend crumbles just because of a single insult, then he definitely should not be playing online.

please report people you believe to be officially harassing you. the devs have chatlogs saved when you make an in-game report and will take action if necessary.

in terms of not being on pc, please report it to microsoft or sony. in terms of nintendo, how the ######### they messaging you?

In DBD, there are less players in a match than most/all of the games people say in this thread, so toxicity tends to be more impactful, especially killer, which is more common and likely to gang up on than shooters that has 4v4 or 6v6. (also, I don't know about you guys, but I think some mechanics of DBD are more complecated than "shoot people" or "defuse bombs"

So glad I first played this game on XBOX One with no post game chat and with friends who told me I did okay for my first time even though I definitely did not. (I spent most of the time hiding in a locker from the huntress because her hum scared me)

No, I have not played that specific title. What I have played, however, is an extensive amount of R6 Siege, most Battlefield titles, every CoD title before Infinite Warfare, Overwatch, and even GTA Online. So far, with the exception of DBD, the only game I have played in which people actively and regularly go out of their way to message me is GTA. And that's not exactly a competitive PVP shooter, it just happens to have that mechanic in the game. Even Siege isn't that bad these days, thanks to the developers.

    Edit: I forgot PUBG

This is a joke right? Dbd is pretty tame as far as video game hostility goes. Given the only chat is optional postgame chat I rarely bother looking at its a LONG bloody way from being some type of toxic cesspool. When games have in match chats are where toxicity can actually be relevant. Looks at mobas, you can easily have multiple people firing off for an entire half hour with the worst vitrol imaginable and it actually impacts match performance as people spam eachother with hate instead of actually doing ######### and concentrating. Seriously dbd is extremely difficult to actually be toxic in outside of outright sandbagging which is extremely rare in my experience. Hell what little postgame hate messages I bother staying to read are tame as hell compared to most online game I've played. Even if it was actual hostile stuff it'd still be completely optional that you have to intentionally sink yourself into.

Why do people use "People are toxic in other games too!" as some kind of excuse for it to be ok here though. DBD's toxicity and harrassment is on a whole other level from most of those other games, for one simple reason:

The victim will almost always be outnumbered.

Especially in the case of SWF, there will always be a "you tell em, Steve Dave!" to compliment every instance of BMing. Its half the reason they do it. Whether it be people on comms laughing at a "baby killer," sandbagging a solo queuer they get paired with, a killer streamer who is being toxic and laughing at it with their chat, toxicity rarely STARTS with just one person. The problem is that those victims often get tilted/shook/whatever you want to call it, and then they often start taking it out on other players in turn. You also see this in games like DotA and LoL for the same reason: people group up with their buddies to cut other people down.

In games like CoD, you can just assume everyone is an underage little ######### who is just a toxic person.

Guarantee if people could slap the hell out of each other through the internet, toxicity would practically disappear from gaming altogether.

I think it's a terrible way to represent the game if you see a rank 20 and go "yeah he deserves to be completely ridiculed for not playing the game," and not "damn it sucks the system gave you this as one of your first games, but matchmaking is sometimes garbage."

It doesn't matter if every multiplayer game out there has people who act like garbage human beings, it doesn't excuse their behavior or the lack of positive feedback to newer players.

I never said it did? In fact I said the person that was calling him names was in the wrong and they certainly are. I'm also saying that if someone quits a game after a single toxic message then they should probably avoid multiplayer games in general. It doesn't matter the game you play, you're going to have toxic people in it.

How come most Discussion i read, I see most people agree in most cases, but most of my post, I get White knighted up the ass?

(it's almost like i'm the killer that can't do anything, and everyone else are survivors that does everything they can to remove my agency)

This game is for Every One to legitimately have fun just has to be learned. Everyone starts some where. Just a bad time for new people to try to learn right not cause the match making is in a bad place at the moment but it should get better really soon. If he gave up after one match then DBD isn't his cup of tea anyway

The biggest problem in my eyes is the protection of the bullies through online anonymity. The thing is it is no excuse but a general problem in all online multiplayer PvP games.

The asymmetrical style of game play in dbd only increases the group vs individual aspect. But there is only so much that can be done. And yes if the people can't take the heat they have to get out of the fire (aka go Singleplayer).

I have been bullied by my whole class from elementary through to highschool, sometimes more sometimes less but even I know that words from a person over the internet don't hurt if you don't let them. You are just as anonymous as they are and likely will never meet them again.

The only thing you can do is report and go on in hope that the price of the game keeps them from making new accounts which isn't even a hurdle in for example my staple game league of legends.

  • Terra92
    Terra92 Member Posts: 583

You completely missed my point. But go ahead and tell new players they should expect to spend $60 to get yelled at in their first game. That'll really grow the playerbase.

There are plenty of gaming communities out there that are supportive and aren't absolute jerks to each other in chat. Why do we keep pretending like the DBD community can't improve? Oh right because we want to continue being garbage human beings to each other. Yeah that'll really bring the community together. Bunch of garbage sitting at the bottom of a dump.

The devs have a hard time preventing bullying due to the 4 vs 1 design. But They need to disable messaging by default so you have to switch it ON to receive messages and fix matchmaking so they will never mix rank 20s with rank 10s or rank 1s with rank 10s. The ONLY time this should happen is if an SWF has a mix of ranks, then matchmake with the highest SWF rank to offset the SWF advantage.

If this increases wait times then they need to work on making sure good killers get into higher ranks and encourage people to actually play killer with incentives or balance changes.

Not everyone has thick skin like you. Imagine playing your first game and having threats sent towards you, that can mentally damage a person or even cause self harm. Multiplayer games shouldn't be like this, and you act like it should. Death threats are illegal and shouldn't be present online or in a vide game. But who am I kidding, it's multiplayer games isn't it?

Tbh this whole "If U cAn'T HanDlE pEOpLe TrEaTiNg YoU lIkE CRAp AlL THe TiiIiiiIiIME U ShoUlD nEVER PlAy WITh PEoplE" mentality is what makes gaming spheres so toxic--

Because you have a-hole A being an a-hole and then a-hole B shrugging like "I just take abuse or give it back. :^)" and then A thrives and B thinks it's the norm when it really shouldn't be.

If any of the all-time toxic games had anything in place to stop this kind of behavior then

    1. The overall experience of games would be better
    2. You wouldn't have so many of these already struggling young gamers ending up more depressed than ever because their options are being ######### on or isolation
    3. You'd have an actual community formed around the game instead of, frankly, forums that consist mainly of posts about how awful this game is to play
    4. Oh, and people would actually think gaming or games in general weren't exclusively for kids or adults that are mainly losers or somehow have made gaming into a job.

Because, whatever broken mechanics there are, be it keys, maps, mori's, certain perks, certain killers, nobody REALLY cares until you get stomped and then after have to endure either four people shitting on you or one person who abused a mechanic being snotty about it.

This man doesnt need to prove his point, he needs NUMBERS!

Well, i can 100% agree with you, in my experience every multiplayer, but especially the pvp ones are very toxic.

I recommend you to not keep argueing with this guy, he just wants to hear his own opinion and will, like he already did, just answer your long message with one word and a questionmark.

Would you rather me lie and say "This community is different from all those other games and you will find nothing but kind and supportive people here and the experience you had was nothing but an outlier!" Because I think that would only make things worse when they come to realize that isn't true.

Also, would you care to restate your point then because I'm not entirely sure what it is? Is it that we as a community can be better and more supportive than we currently are? Because while that is an optimistic viewpoint it's also rather unrealistic in a wider sense. It's like saying youtube comments don't have to be a cesspool of random bullshit. Sure, as an individual you can be nicer and more supportive to people but it's not that easy to change an entire community for the better, not to mention that DBD has pretty varying communities in the first place from the forums, reddit, streamers, even twitter. Saying that all these communities can change for the better simply won't happen and I see no reason to pretend they can. People will be ######### and there is nothing you, me, or anyone else can do about it.

Also also, I think I was being supportive in my initial comment. I gave him some solid advice to turn off any chat and mute mics in future games he plays since it seems like he doesn't deal with toxicity very well and almost every multiplayer game in existence will have some form of toxic people in it. I even said that I hope he gives DBD another shot after turning off messages as well.

Sure, I could have babied my words more but I see no reason to. The quicker someone realizes that online video games will have toxic people the quicker they'll be able to learn how to deal with it or simply move on to something else they can find enjoyment in.

Everyone seems to be big snowflakes now a days. You are playing a game where the main objectives are to kill people if you area killer. Re red the word KILL. Yet you moan about some troll messages. If you can't handle some naughty worded messages should you really be playing a game where you stab people through the chest or bite their fingers off

It doesn't even need to be SnD. Go on MW, load up a 725 and just prepare your ears. Something as simple as 2v2 Gunfight usually ends up with someone calling you slurs. I've only had a slur used against me maybe once in my 2000+ hours on DBD. It's a daily thing in COD.

I’m sorry your friend had that experience. Whenever someone body blocks me or leads a killer to me, I just assume it was an accident. Always better to assume the best of people to keep the game fun. You can’t misconstrue a mean message though.

I primarily play with my Dad who lives in another country. We have fun, and used to play L4D together all the time. It’s really been a great way to spend quality time together.

But do most people keep their messages open? It seems a smart move to keep messages closed.

If I had friends that play games, which I don't because they feel to old for that..I would tell a new player on Xbox to block all messages. You can play how you want, toxic, nice or simply newbie horrible misstake mode and yet no one will ever complain.

  • Nebula

If you don't want to be offended by post game chat or if someone messages you on console simply leave the game right after the match or don't open the message. Sometimes there are very simple solutions to these problem. Console also gives you an option to block all incoming messages from people who are not your friends.

I must have a different experience than every one else playing this game because it is very rare for someone to go out the way to message me to talk #########, and if they do I'll just delete the message and move on with my day.

I'll never understand people who complain about toxic messages.

When I first got into this game, I knew going in that it was a possibility, and turned the chat/messages/friend requests off accordingly. It's really very simple lol

This is why we need to report every single one of those people until they get banned and leave the game. They make the game worse for everyone. However, you should never engage with them. They're not worth the effort.
