How to counterplay Pyramid Head?

Hello. I've been playing this game for almost a month now and other then The Spirit match (because just like everyone else saying, it's pretty much a gamble), I really do enjoy playing this game.

But I just don't understand how to play against Pyramid Head.

I'm not saying op or nerf because I believe there is a way to counterplay against him. But I just can't figure it out by myself how many times I try.

The first problem I'm encountering is the ground attack thing. This is the biggest reason why I'm keep getting hooked. It happens too fast to the point I can't dodge to the side or run straight to avoid it because of the range. It goes through wall and everything so the pallets and windows vault are nearly effective because by the time I vault, I'm already AAHHHHHHHH-ing. I feel like I'm missing something here.

Second, the trap. Unlike other killer that can set pinpoint trap, Pyramid Head can just poop around that dark trap in a dark game. Last time when I encountered him, he just hooked survivor and poop half circle around the hook so from any direction you go, you will get hit by the trap and whacked. Btw why is there a skill check while you're in the cage? I just don't understand this one.

I'm not trying to spread hate. Massive respect to all killers who patiently waiting for that long matchmaking and thank you for showing mercy sometime. I just want a tip or advice how to play against him.

If i'm in a wrong category, I'm sorry I'm new here.

Ii's fine, i'm almost certain your in the right catergory :).

With his ranged attack it's mainly predicting based on the skill level of the person playing him, so if you know it's not a good pyramid head, it's likely hell never go for any risky shots, however, if the player is alright with him then he will go for some. Most pyramid head players are at this level and don't know how to properly bait, so look at the direction he is looking and assume he is going to do the attack.

Also try to avoid purposefully locking yourself in a long animation such as vaulting a pallet, it's just a free judgement hit if he has his knife in the ground.

As for the trials on the ground, you can crouch over them and you won't be tourmented. Sometimes though you will be forced into them, but that's out of your control.

I am prestige 3 with Pyramid Head.

I would recommend not using pallets or window vaults in most situations when being chased by him. I will just go put my sword in the ground and if you vault or pallet I'm going to hit you with ranged, if you try to change direction I'm going to auto you. Best thing you can do in a chase is loop him around walls or objects, preferably ones where you can keep an eye on him. If you can't see him be prepared for a blind read, I cant tell you how many hooks I've gotten with blind reads because someone tried to loop the very predictable shed. Dont worry about torment trails while being chased, it's a pointless endeavor. Try to bait a ranged attack and dodge it, the recover animation is fairly long and will buy you time to get some distance.

You can crouch to avoid being tormented by his trail, but like I said you wont always be able to avoid this if in a chase.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

I've figured a few things out playing as and playing against Pyramid Head.

    1. Don't carry an item. It removes your ability to fake any vaults because the item disappears in your hand when you initiate the vault animation.

    2. You have more time to dodge the shockwave the further away you are from him. The ground glows and then the attack follows in a line from him. You have a window to move out of the rectangle if you have some distance.

    3. To dodge it, I've found it best to keep moving when his sword is in the ground due to the limited flick he has on it. It's very hard to time it up when the survivor is whipping back and forth. When approaching a pallet, run through it and try to vacuum back into it at the very last second for a stun if he's trying to fake his attack.

I'll just copy this from another comment i posted about Pyramid Head counterplay:

    How to counter pyramid head:

-Lose LoS, make him think you're gonna mindgame a loop, then just hold W mindlessly and make a ton of distance

-If he's too close and you have to loop him, pay attention to your position determine weather or not its prudent to drop the pallet and when to do so. There's a billion pallets in the map and if your teammates are doing gens there's no such thing as wasting pallets, so you don't have to be greedy with the loop. Drop the pallet before he has the chance to wind up his attack so you have the time to dodge it.

-Remember the closer you are to pyramid head, the harder his M2 is to dodge. If you dropped a pallet at the right time you can keep a bit further from the pallet or window so he has a more awkward angle, which will give you a better chance to dodge.

-If he's too close and you can't loop, take the hit and use the sprint burst to put yourself in a more favourable position.

-Making distance and maintaining it is this guy's biggest counter and if you found yourself in a bad position, then you need more map knowledge or you need to pay more attention.

-If he misses his M2, dont stick around a loop unless its an extremely safe tile. Just bolt it to make distance.

-If he's hitting you, try and see what it is he is doing so you can counterplay accordingly. Remember it's a player youre going against. See how they play, play to counter it.

-Try to see which loops are good against him and which ones aren't.

    -Dead Hard is your friend

Just as a note so you can understand how important it is to make distance, and this applies to every killer in the game. If you hear his terror radius and know where he would be coming from, if you start running when he is 30 meters away from you, just for him to catch up, if you run in a straight line, it will take him 50 seconds, because he gains on you at 0.6 meters per second. In practice it doesn't work like that because you can't run for 50 seconds straight. However its just to illustrate how important making distance is. You can waste soooo much time by just tricking killers into believing you're gonna mindgame a tile and just running away when you lose LoS.

I also disagree about spirit's counter being a "gamble", but its not the point of this thread so I won't get into it here XD

There is no way to avoid getting "zoned". Its inevitable, unless the PH is bad at tracking and loses you at a LoS-Blocker-Tile.

Rank 1 survivor here who sees a lot of PH.

I usually start running from him when hes still pretty far away, this delays blodlust and the killer has no mobility.

His lack of mobility is his greatest weakness, and what you want to take advantage of by running from him at such a distance that it delays bloodlust.

Try not to lead him to your teammates if you can help it though.

I always assume the PH I'm against has good aim until proven otherwise, and don't start looping until he's close.

If not injured, just run through pallets without dropping and run away from windows rather than vaulting, you will get hit, but can maximize your sprint burst to gain distance.

You can drop pallets early if PH doesn't see you and doesn't have the knife down, this may slow him down a bit.

Same for vaulting windows, the more distance and LOS blockers you have, the better your odds, but plays get very risky once you're within his range.

If you don't use dead hard, bring it, it easily counters the ranged attack and punishes PH heavily.

Being tormented isnt much to worry about unless if you use DS or are trying to get somewhere stealthily. Being sent to a cage is basically a free safe unhook.

It's not that easy, you only loop until he tries to hit with range then you get your distance from him. If you try pallets and windows you will be downed. You will need to get creative with your loops.

I would say many comments have already covered information on countering him during a chase. One of the big ones that helps me is something I call “fake it and move on” tech... where you go around a corner make him think you are going a certain way so he thinks you want to loop that tile but the moment you lose LoS with him you actually leave it completely.

I find myself kiting him a lot because of how much zoning he does. The only problem is you have to be very aware of your surroundings for both your own safety as well as making sure you don’t Sandbag a teammate in the process.

Also, Just some general tips off the top of my head.

    • Never stay working on a gen when you can clearly hear his terror radius on the other side of the wall. Remember killers can see gen auras at all times.
    • Try your best to gauge how far his reach is because some of his add ons allow his power to reach further than normal.
    • I would say if you can, try him out just to understand some of his add ons and his movement. Playing killer has definitely helped me understand better how to play against them.

All the pyramid heads I go against just cancel their ranged attack to bait and hit. You’re gonna get hit regardless because vaulting a window of dropping a pallet? BOOM ranged attack. Looping? BOOM cancel attack and Smack.

any sort of trap iirc, you can crouch walk through without triggering it. but sometimes when you're on one that way, and then say try to disarm it like a trapper's, sometimes that's triggered the trap for me. might be a buggy interaction or something though since it doesn't always dot hat but I avoid doing it that way now anyways. but one of the times urban evasion might come in handy, might be against a killer like pyramid head since you could crouch over his lines while going at walking speed over them. Otherwise unless it's a map where I can hide quickly around a genw ithout scratch marks though, that perk turned out to work against me by using up a slot thatc ould have gone to somehting else. But ons ome maps and against some killers like the hag too... I liked urban evasion. There just didn't seem to be enough opportunities to make the most out of that perk though since it's all rng even the killer you face on top of the map and layout.

But basically just crouch walk over traps and the ph lines. Maybe wait a little later on the save to be sure you'll have enough time to crouch over it unless he already knows you're there and is coming. If he makes the circle too close tot he hook or a gen though it'll disappear, took me a bit to realize that when I was using ph lol. I just came back more recently and the last time I played you could literally trap a guy that just got off the hook with the trapper, I had an outdated mindset. I remember the counter to that being if you were on the hook holding m1 so you immediately went to disarm the trap after coming off the hook lmao.

Like all killers, it depends on who is playing him. A good Pyramid Head can be a huge threat cause of his dark manipulation abilities that can keep others away from a hooked survivor. Plus his cage of Judgement ability is also strong. My advice is to try to hide from him for as long as possible. If you get in a chase with him, try to stay near cover and listen for when he is about to use his ranged sword attack, then make a sharp turn to avoid it. I've played against him on outdoor maps and indoor maps. You definitely want to hope that you face him outside. I've won against him in Nurse's Hospital and it was a close game between me and one survivor with 2 gens left. Indoor maps have a lot of narrow hallways, especially Elementary School on Silent Hill.
