Rating System theorycrafting

Hi everyone, yet another thread about the current MM/R.

What's your guess on how the rating works? What do you think would make the most sense to consider when rating a player?

Here are some facts and statements that I think are important to note:

  • Based on their statistics, BHVR doesn't consider rank as a meaningful measurement for skill
  • Rank progression is based on pips / depips

The logical conclusion, if Rank is not a meaningful measurement for skill, neither are pips so I assume emblems have little to no effect on your rating. If they do have impact, it would be a contradiction to the statement that Ranks (and therefore pips and emblems) are meaningless. It would also result in the same as ranking; the more you play, the higher you get regardless of your actual skill.

So if pips/ emblems are not considerd for the rating, what else could it be?

My guess is that the rating is more based on our old ranking system called "Victory Cube" which is solely based on hooks / kills for Killers. For the Survivors there's probably a similar system in place that considers getting hooked / escaping as a measurement for the performance. I could also imagine that the Devotion Level affects the rating slighly. This system is very easily exploitable, you can just ######### as Survivor or let everyone escape as Killer to keep your rating low - that's the reason why they keep it secret. Seems legit to me!

It's too consistent in pairing low skill Killers with high skill Survivors (and the other way around) for that.

    ----------------

My explanation for this is that they (hopefully by accident) use a players Killer rating to find a Killer on the same level to go against and the other way around.

Survivor mains that rarely play Killer therefore get low skill Killer.

Killer mains that rarely play Survivor get low skill Survivor.
