An in-depth rework of Spirit
Easily one of the most controversial killers in the game, Spirit has gained the ire of many a player for how her power forces guesses and interaction on both sides. The most common point brought up when discussing how her power is unfair to go against is how survivors are given very little information when a Spirit starts phasing and have to rely on luck to avoid a hit.
I would argue that there's for more interaction to going against a Spirit than just guessing, but that's not what this post is about. But before I get into how I am proposing to change her, I want to explain why. And in a single word:
Feedback.
I'll use Nurse as an example:
- Nurse begins charging up a blink, allowing survivors to know how far she'll teleport.
- Nurse blinks to her target location and clear visual and audio indicators.
- Nurse reappears and only has 2 seconds to either charge up another blink or attack.
- Nurse attacks.
Everything about the Nurse's power is designed to let survivors know what she's going to do. Now take Spirit's:
- Spirit stands still, forcing survivors to guess when she starts phasing
- Spirit reappears from phasing and attacks
Now granted there are ways to get more feedback from her like running Spine Chill or listening to her footsteps at close range. But otherwise there's very little information that survivors get before they are hit. So the 2 main goals of my changes are to give survivors more feedback that the Spirit is using her power and buff her accordingly so she's more on par with Nurse.
Here is her new power:
Press and hold the power button to leave your body as a husk
- As a husk you move extremely quickly but cannot attack.
- Survivors can see you entering husk form but cannot see you as a husk.
After cancelling your power or the duration runs out you will rapidly phase along the path you made a husk
- Any survivor you touch while phasing will cancel your phase and injure them.
- You can attack out of a phase to cancel it prematurely
Here's a rough sketch of the Spirit and survivor at the shack showing how it would work.
- The Spirit moves forward as a husk, shown by the dotted line, and cancels her power at the X.
- The Spirit starts phasing along the path she made as a husk. She would rapidly twitch forward, similarly to how she sometimes passively phases.
- The Spirit reaches the end of her trail.
Although obviously taking quite some development time to properly implement, I believe this rework of the Spirit's power would ease the complaints that people have about her power not giving enough information and give a greater layer of depth when playing as her.
What do all of you think? Be as critical as possible about this idea.

I love the idea, it keeps the feel and energy of spirit and also hits the problem with spirit over the head. My only worry is that this may give survivors too much time to react. Depending on how quickly she phases along the trail it may be impossible to get a hit. I feel like it's the same problem with Pyramid head where the survivor 80% of the time has the opportunity to react to his power so what ends up happening is a very unsatisfying game of guessing for both killer and survivor. This reworked spirit would be very hard to balance but overall I think this would be a healthy change for the game.

Yeah. It would depend on how fast she moves as a husk and while phasing in order to be balanced properly.
But I think with enough time it could be done and be a good improvement for the game overall.

So she makes a path and then teleports back to her start position and quickly blinks along that path while visible?
That is terrible lol

I feel like that would make it nigh impossible to properly land hits.

Why do you think its terrible?

Not at all. It would simply be a matter of balancing the speed while a husk, and while phasing.

Thats fair, It would certainly be hard to make it dogdeable but hittable.

Holding W would literally counter her as you will never be able to catch up.
Nobody is going to stay at a jungle gym, and nobody is going to walk on the same spot against her.
This literally turns her into a 110% m1 killer.

I haven't even set a speed for her to got at and you're assuming that her power will be useless?
Because I can absolutely see a version of her power can be balanced without making her too powerful or too weak.

Why does it matter how fast she travels in her power when she needs to retrace the same path twice? survivors don't stay in the same spot and they don't run in straight lines.

She only needs to retrace her path once. First she sets a path, then phases across it.
And it absolutely matters how fast she goes because if it's balanced correctly running in a straight line will not out pace her and just lead to a free hit.

Because if she travels fast enough, and you are able to predict either A) where they are going, or B) how they will react to seeing you phasing at them, your path will cross theirs and you will get a hit.
You don’t have to end your power where the survivor is, you simply have to cross paths with them.

How is that any different from hitting them? if anything it is worse because you can just draw an invisible circle around the sound they make and they will cross your path while you are still in phase.

"Sound they make"? In this rework the Spirit can see the survivors at all times, just so you know.

By your own admission survivors don’t stay in the same spot, so if you walked in a circle around them, they would likely be out of the circle before you even finished drawing it.
