Discussing the history of tunneling

I swear that at the beginning of dbd history tunneling wasn't really frowned upon, unlike facecamping. Whether your talking about the OG meaning of a tunneler or the really broad meaning ppl seem to use today. Sure there was still a small vocal part of the community that hated it with a passion but the majority didn't care. I'd say that it was like 1 in 10. If not less than that. I wasn't playing the game back then though. Just following it.


It wasn't until around the time DS came out that tunneling became a big issue and it became 4 in 10 against tunneling. Then DS was nerfed into the ground, then reworked and tweaked. Around that period the definition of tunneling became super vague and the idea that it was super toxic and one of the biggest problems became cemented in the vast majority of survivors.


Now there is something to say about hooking a survivor after a bad hook save where there's nothing that survivor could've done and this was apart of the original definition of tunneling but how the hell did it shift so far that tunneling is just hooking a single survivor consecutively. The argument that made sense was that there's nothing a survivor could've done when they're targeted off hook like that, since there was no way to reach a loop. Now it doesn't even matter if the injured/uninjured survivor could make it to a loop.


I don't want the discussion to be an us vs them type discussion. I'm a survivor main anyways. I'm just wondering what changed? Or was I just not paying attention?


As a side note: where the hell did the idea of gen rushing come from? It was whispered around here and there but what popularized it?

    I honestly don't think you'll get a better answer than what @ABannedCat gave you. The game is incredibly different from what it was in the beginning. Even in the last year there have been multiple changes that quite greatly nerf survivors (not that they weren't necessary!).

    I might be able to lead a killer on a very long chase before I go down, even on a map that had good RNG for the killer as far as tile and pallet spawns go, but if I get hooked next to a used pallet gym, some rocks, and a complete deadzone, there's a good chance you've got me back on the hook within a few seconds if you decide that you're gonna come back to the hook to try to re-down me every single time someone saves me.

    I’m pretty new to the game, but I actually like when the killer chases me, because it’s more fun than fixing generators.

    As a killer I have found I can tunnel people without intending to. On certain games I have struggled to find the survivors, so I’ll chase anyone I can find. There have been matches where I can only ever find the same survivor, so they will probably think they’re being tunnelled. They’re not, I just can’t find anyone else.
