Is Oni an actual Oni?
From his maskless model, he looks like he would have when he was alive, except with grey skin. However, his mask has a third eye that moves on its own. The only time he looks like an actual Oni is with the Cursed Fate cosmetic. In any other cosmetic he’s just a dude with an Oni mask. So, in short, is he an Oni wearing an Oni mask? A man with Oni-like powers? Or something else entirely?

Alright, thanks. Just a little confused on the fine details of things like this.

Doesn't Oni mean Ogre in japanese? I always understood it as the entity changing him into something like an ogre after he dies.

From what I’ve seen, it can be translated many ways, such as demon, troll, ogre, etc. And thinking about it, he probably not an actual Oni but rather a demon (small but notable difference). I think The Entity turned him into something based on his nickname in his life, and not an actual Oni in Jigoku (like Hell). Onis are supposedly supposed to torture people in Jigoku...kind of like Oni does in the realms. Weird, a lot of strange coincidences and convolutions.

Not exactly, Onis do not originate from humans and he was just a regular man, he was called oni by the townfolk for his brutal and violent tendencies so when the entity took him it made him into something similar to one. Like Spirit, she wasnt a ghost when the entity took her but it molded her into one.

There are many stories of people transforming into Oni due to acts of evil or vengeance. This usually happens to female oni, but is not particularly reserved for them. So, to answer your question, he used to be human, but yes, the Oni is currently an actual Oni.

Like Arial said, Oni are made from evil humans. This does bring up the concept of religion (not our world religion) though...are there other beings in their universe? Obviously there’s the entity, but could there be others? Now, I’m basically knowledge-less on my Japanese mythology, so I don’t exactly know why they were turned into Oni. Oni was definitely wicked, but its weird how he wasn’t pure evil like many Oni are (he cared for his son and remorsed when he killed his father). So this brings up whether he was molded to look like an Oni with Oni powers, or if he’s a genuine mythological demon stolen right after death

I believe Onis in japanese folklore are spirits akin to western ogres but they do not originate from human souls (unlike some other evil spirits which do originate from certain people), they exist as evil spirits just because, like western gnomes, ogres, harpies etc.
