How do you pronounce "Abuse" in Monitor and Abuse?
Is it ab-yus or uhb-yooz?
Like, as in "He was the target of abuse" (ab-yus) or "He abused the system" (uhb-yooz)

Considering "Monitor" is definitely meant to be monitor as in to watch someone as opposed to monitor as in a computer screen it makes sense that abuse is used as a verb, but saying it properly just doesn't sound right. Personally I say it ab-yus.

Depends on how Kepler 152-B, the note D double sharp, and the Triangulum galaxy align.
Also known as randomly.

Wait? Are those different meanings? Not a native English speaker here.
thought different pronunciation would be due to dialects or something like that..

Considering the perk title is using "Abuse" as a verb (ie, to monitor and abuse something), it's proper pronunciation as a verb (according to the Cambridge dictionary) is ab-yooz.
But people can use the noun pronunciation if they really want to (ab-yuse). It would just also imply that "Monitor" was also being used as a noun in that phrase (ie, a monitor and abuse), which kinda makes it sound like Doc is bringing his computer into the trials to beat people up with.

Not different meaning, different use.
Ab-yus, present tense.
Uhb-yoos, past tense.

uh-buuh-zee

Ab-use: the use of abs - itās a great belly exercise! š
(but to answer the question, I call it āab-ewzā on the perk)

You pronounce it ƤbĖt(y)oĶos.

It's not actually a present tense vs. past tense thing. It's a noun vs. verb thing.
Abuse [link, including pronunciation] is a transitive verb that means "to use improperly or excessively" or "to hurt or injure by maltreatment"
Abuse [link, including pronunciation] is a noun that means "Improper or excessive use" or "physical maltreatment or violence". You can think of it as the noun form of the verb "abuse".

You're so right, which means I have been pronouncing it wrong! I'm probably going to switch to using the verb pronunciation.

Alrighty, thx. Always thought both forms had the same pronunciation..

Verbs with a noun counterpart like the that usually are pronounced with a Z sound at the end.
House(/haŹs/) - Noun
House (/haŹz/) - Verb
Same thing happens with Abuse (/ÉĖbjuĖs/) or (/ÉĖbjuĖz/).
Uh-Byuus is a noun
Uh-Byuuz is a verb.
In the case of the perk, I believe both Monitor and Abuse are used as verbs, so it's pronounced with a Z at the end. However...it ultimately doesn't matter too much. Pronounce it however you like.

I thought ab-yus is the only way to say it

If you think it's pronounced abuse and not abuse, you're crazy.
1 -
No problem! English is just wacky sometimes.
1 -
I pronounce is as "sweaty no good Slinger main perk"
1 -
Definitely uhb-yooz
1 -
Itās currently uhb-yus, but possibly getting nerfed to uhb-yooz sometime in the foreseeable future

I bypass the entity-loving fudge outta this problem by just calling this perk "Monitor".
4 -
You pronounce it - "Where the ######### is the kil- OH ######### OH ######### OH #########"
2 -
-
Monitor and abuse. Two verbs. Use the verb pronunciation.
"I am going to monitor you and abuse you".
As the Doctor would do to his patients.
4 -
It's a verb, can't stand when people pronounce it like the abstract noun.
3 -
it's french, so the whole perk would be pronounced "mon-eh-tize and ah-bugs".
sorry, someone had to make that joke
I've always pronounced it uh-byooz, but thanks to this thread I understand why š

Both ways

The pronunciation is due to dialects but yes, they have different meanings. Abuse as in monitor and abuse is referring to hit or hurting someone (domestic abuse for example). Where as abusing something is using it a lot as much as you want. (Not dictionary definitions but close enough)

Love you too dearest Skies! :)

Seems like it is being used as a verb, along with Monitor.
So it would be ab-yuz

Its pronounced with a Z sound. Cause english. Adverb vs verb.
0 -
It's a long S. As in Use. Monitor is being used as a verb here, which would mean abuse is also supposed to be a verb.
1 -
Well, I just call it ab-use.
But god, this topic further made believe that English language is one of the most illogical languages in the world in terms of spelling.
Why the same word has two different ways of spelling besides no visible change to its letter structure?
Not that it matters, most words in English don't match the alphabetical pronunciation anyway. Practically having to learn how to spell each word anew. This is bizzare.

You can have:
Abuse: The act of abusing "They abuse her" (Ah-byuse)
Abuse: Prolonged harm to someone else "They are suffering abuse" (Ab-uoos, where the oo sounds like you're fascinated: ooh a rock)

Sir I think you just uncovered docs source of his power

It's verb format, going by context as in you are Monitoring and abusing. Therefore, ab-yooz.
