How painful is it to learn Huntress?

I'm really interested in this killer, but not sure I want to go through the hell of learning her. Right now, I only really play Nurse and Legion. But Legion gets boring after a few games and Nurse can only be played during certain hours (SWF times or more likely to get red rank survivors only times), or else I just steam-roll (which is extremely boring for me). I've been thinking of picking up Huntress because she is strong and seems like a lot of fun. But I remember the pain of learning Nurse and only did it because she was the first killer that I learned and I grinded her from rank 20 (no perks basically) to rank 1, decked out P3. Every time I feel myself wanting to lock in Huntress, I remember the times where I just got so demoralized by Nurse. And how endless that period was...

If you could put up with learning Nurse (and dealing with some of the outdated "quirks" of playing Legion on a regular basis), then Huntress won't be anything too miserable. In fact, I'd say she was actually a rather exciting killer to learn (and that's coming from a console player).

Practice is king, but you can always check out online guides (like this one) to set you on a good path earlier.

I'd highly recommend starting off with any of Huntress's add-ons that reduce wind-up time, cooldown (between throws), or that give you extra hatchets. Anything to encourage maximum use of her power as much as possible (you'll learn faster if you try to use them more often). Glowing Concoction is also worth considering if you want to try cheeky follow-up shots after successful hits (especially at range).

Ironically, you should probably also avoid using her Iridescent Head while learning her (it makes missed hatchets more punishing).

Oh, and bring Whispers. There are other perks that synergize well with Huntress, but Whispers is just such a pleasant QoL boost for her (and helps her deal with her massive humming radius better).

She's really not that terrible to learn, but starting off with a decent idea of what tricks you should be using to more reliably land hatchets will make her far less initially frustrating.

ScottJund has a Huntress guide that's still relevant. Huntress isn't that hard of a killer to get the grips of. Your entire game plan is throwing hatchets. The better you throw them, the better you do with her. Crosshairs help a lot as well.

I have trouble figuring out what you can throw over and what you can't, especially with the new map reworks. Will I figure it out? Yeah.

Will I figure it out overnight? Eh.

Short answer- She's pretty easy with strong add-ons (mainly the wind up ones)

Long answer- If you want to master base kit huntress, she's one of the harder killers in the game because you need a ton of gamesense to predict shots in advance enough to hit people.

Nah she's no where near as hard and painful to learn as nurse. You have 5 hatchets at base meaning 5 hatchet attemps and throws before you are punished and need to reload and missing a hatchet is no where near as bad as missing a nurse blink.

She's also really fun to learn regardless of whether you win or not in my experience.

Pretty much this. Only outdated points are ruin was reworked and hitbox while healing was fixed. But advises and techniques are still useful.

Playing huntress can be painful when you miss 5 hatchets in a row because of rush and gens pop like crazy. Or when you have great opportunity to snipe someone but you are out of hatchets.

I'm surprised that almo isn't here, oh well.

It's not that bad, definitely not as bad as nurse. If you have at least some experience with fps games, then huntress is not going to be difficult to learn.

To master tho, that's a different story. I suggest watching videos of good huntresses cuz they know EVERY single tile that they can hit with their hatchets, every single crossmap hatchet, every trick in the book

Hardest Killer's to learn in order.

    Nurse>Blight>Deathslinger>Huntress

If you can play Nurse as you said the Huntress won't be too difficult for you to learn. Best of luck man

She's not really that hard to learn, it's a lot about learning when to use the hatchet rather than how hard it is to throw them. The distance they can go, what's a good angle, how long the wind up feels, etc.

I highly advise you to not use the wind up add ons! Avoid Manna Grass Braid and Flower Babushka though. Once you want to use other add ons, you'll have a hard time adjusting to the slower wind-up speed and it can really affect your games. I used them as my first add ons and when I later used other add ons, I had to relearn the wind up time and getting used to it.

While it's not as prominent as it is with Nurse, you do develope some sort of muscle memory when it comes to distances and speed. If you use the wind up add ons from the start, you'll get used to those and once you stop using them, you'll miss a lot of hatchets due to early throws. I'm speaking of experience - you now have to get used to the actual wind up time, thus possibly making your experience furstrating. Use Leather Loop and Infantry Belt. Those extra hatchets are much better than a faster wind up!

The biggest part is figuring out when to throw hatchets and to predict a survivors movement. Also please know twigs on trees are awful to deal with. A good thing for her is throwing hatchets through tiny spaces where it can be a surprise for survivors, so it's all about learning the tricks with her and when to use them.

I generally advise avoid using the axe first in most situations. Hatchet first, then axe, if you're close enough. You save much more time that way. Of course there are situations where you may be out of hatchets, if there is nothing nearby, go for the hit, but I generally advise you to reload ASAP. Hitting a survivor with a hatchet and then downing them with a m1 is much quicker than m1 + hatchet. They get a massive speed boost and you're still wiping the blood off your axe, resulting in more time for the survivor to get away.

For QoL, I advise using Deerskin Gloves + Iron Maiden. You can save valuable time when you have to reload and it surprises survivors if they think they have XYZ amount of time to get away, but they don't actually have that time.

Not very hard and not complicated as Nurse. All you need to do is get a feel of your how far you can get away with decrease hatchet wind up ad ons in loops and I guess how Survivor cope with it. The rest is up to your aiming abilities.

She is pretty easy. She is one of those Killers you can play naked at level 1 with no add-ons and still do pretty well once you get your aim down.

One of her best features is that her Hatchet throw has no wipe animation, so if you are quick you can nail a hatchet wound and then follow it up with a swift M1 Basic Attack and down a Survivor quickly.

On computer, Huntress is alright to practice with

on console she is a painful nightmare

    Compared to Nurse? Easy.

    Compared to other killers? Moderate.

Really comes down to your experience with FPS like games and your aim. Slap a crosshair on your screen and it's just a matter of time really.

When I was playing Huntress at rank 20 I was 4k'ing extremely easy, I made it down to rank 7 and playing against teams of rank 2-5s who know how to loop the huntress and it's a different story entirely. Unless your mindgames are spot on, it's pretty tricky to quickly quickly end chases against extremely competent survivors.

  • JPA
    JPA Member Posts: 1,685

Well it depends how you define "extremely competent", and depends how you define "most".

Playing as Huntress in these ranks recently I've came across people who are pretty good at hiding and/or looping (two things the huntress struggles with due to her humming radius and low speed), and also seem to be pretty aware of how to counter the Huntress (I'm guessing she's quite popular at high ranks?)

Certainly it could be me not being good enough yet, unlucky SWF lobbies, or a mixture of the two, but I'd say your guess of under a week for consistent 4ks (at any rank), is probably an understatement (just go watch CoconutRTS who has thousands of hours on Huntress, he'll still drop the occasional 4k)

    derppug Member Posts: 239

Yeah...People always underestimate the work it takes to consistently 4k, especially at higher ranks. When I was learning Nurse, I would get destroyed by SWFs without much effort on their part and I would do okay-ish. It wasn't until I was solidly red rank (never going below) that I began to hold my own against SWFs (but still no 4k, maybe just 2k). I figure Huntress will take this much work, so I'm just sooooo not ready for the work that goes into learning another hard character. But I want to =/

    Huntress main over here, holaaa,

Huntress is great at getting fast downs through her fast recovery of hatchets. When you hit a hatchet, you don't lose any speed. Meaning less distance for the survivor.

    Tips:

    1. Always try to get a hatchet hit if they're healthy. Even if you are right next to them, still aim and go for a hatchet hit. Only hit them with your basic if you run out of hatchets or have been looping you for a while.

Reason - To close distance, hitting them with basic is alot easier, but with your slow movement speed you'll be catching up for a long time. You need that sweet distance!

    2. Always basic hit them if they're injured. Even though hatchets are easy downs and amazing distance, it slows you and can waste time trying to actually hit them. Don't be ballsy, be safe :P!

Reason: They're already injured, there's no need to close distance, they're gonna be dead in one more hit. It's easier, faster and saves hatchets to just hit them with your basic.

    3. Never leave yourself without any hatchets! That's her power silly?! Without then she's a slow basic killer. Even if it means leaving a chase to get some, DO IT!

Reason - It'll save you so much time and allows you to be a dangerous and proper playing huntress, it sounds stupid to drop a chase but it matters!!

    Quick tips:

    - To get hatchet hits:

= wind up your hatchet and aim it infront of you. This will scare the survivor into juking and eventually INTO YOUR HATCHET AIM, for you to then release and throw :).

    - Break pallets that are really good!

= You're slow, there's no time for big loops!

    - Wind up your hatchet before a pallet!

= This will ensure that if the surviour drops or goes into the pallet area, you will get an easy hit. Sometimes even a free pallet too! :)

    - Practise crossmap hits

= practise makes perfect and getting cross map hits are great to show off and even get fast hits!

    Perks:

    Bbq - Cross maps

Thrilling Tremors - Cross maps on gens

    Whispers - track survivors

Nurses calling - Find unexpected survivors with your small terror radius and hatchet them from a distance :)

Brutal strength - GET RID OF THOSE GOOD PALLETS!

Iron maiden - Fast reload of hatchets

Monitor + abuse - teeny tiny terror radius

    Ruin - Gen regressionnnn

Undying - Keep that ruin baby

Pop - if you hook ppl easy, might aswell get some regression out of it :P

I'm all ears - Auras of survivors, means precise hatchet hits.

    Add ons:

Wind up speed / hatchet Cooldown speed / hatchet hits allow aura of surviour to be seen.

Reason: Faster hatchets / Faster recovery / Precise hatchet hits

P.S alot of practise is needed, you will win games and feel proud, you will lose games and feel like never playing her again.

But she is rewarding when hatchets hit and very powerful when you learn how to understand survivors jukes, when to and when not to hatchet and how to play her effectively :)

I wish you all the best and I hope to play against you someday when I'm a survivor <3

    I hope this helped a little c

I think it depends on what platform. But, capture a few vids of yourself throwing hatchets at people. Watch them. Eventually you will learn to aim high, and do things like aim straight, and wait for people to zig zag away from you, then right into your cross hairs, making hits easy. Learning the collision/hit boxes for obstacles you'll be looped around is the hardest part - things you would think a hatchet could go through, can't. You have to often times aim higher than you expect to, etc..

    It is not.

Huntress is not that hard to pick up when you go for some mediocre to decent games. Like, if you are fine with not 4King every match, you can learn her pretty fast.

However, she has one of the highest skill ceilings in the game, there can be worlds between a decent Huntress and a really good Huntress.

Personally, I would avoid using Wind-Up Add Ons, since you can get used to those and when playing her without those Add Ons the Wind-Up will feel painfully slow. I never used them because of that (but I am not really good at Huntress, but she is one of the most fun Killers to play IMO).

For me I just don't m1 and when they see that I get wrecked and I'm not good with hitting them when they circle into me
