Do you think that pipping matters?
In a match, if you die but you pip do you consider it a win? If so why? Ranks in general aren't that much of a proof that you have skill, rather proof that you've spent many hours playing this game, is my personal opinion at least. What about you? Let me know.

Pips are punishment. I'm a newish player at about 100 hours. In my first four weeks my Killer rank plunged to 13 but then I started having frequent red rank lobbies.
Game became super unfun trying to try out new level one Killers I've never used before as you share a Killer rank across all Killers.
I know depipping on purpose is reportable, so I really look forward to the rank roll back on the 13th.

Rank means nothing to me anymore. There was a time over 2 years ago it did sort of mean something. I was pretty proud to have hit Rank 1 as survivor for the first time when lobbies didn't consist of constant red ranks because I felt as though I'd proven I was good at the game. But now, it doesn't matter anymore. Ranks are so easy to gain, it just comes down to who plays the most. I can't pip killer anymore, so I'm in constant greens, but never see a green rank survivor in any match. And I'm pretty much red rank as survivor every day, even when reset hits, it takes 1 or 2 games to get back to red rank. There's just no effort needed anymore.

To some people, I think it matters. To me, it only matters when I think it matters, which is like 50% of the time. I like to maintain a fairly high rank, and I don't like depipping because something stupid happened. The game is a ranked game, ranks technically have a say in what you will be doing and who you will be paired with/up against. Pipping in any direction affects that. So yes, it matters.
I'm sure that someone with over 3k hours in the game would think otherwise, and that's fine. I don't blame people for feeling either way about it. That said, some people are looking for "wins" to validate their feeling of accomplishment. Maybe that's just to survive. Sometimes it's to bully the Killer. For some, it's to pip up or down. I personally see pips as the most reliable method of determining a win, loss, or draw, mostly because it's based MOSTLY on your own performance, not necessarily the performance of everyone else in the match. I don't like depips, but I'm fine with safety pips or pipping up.

It matters for survivor players, but not for killer players. The survivor emblems actually do measure their success and engagement in the match, but the killer emblems are an obvious attempt by the devs to encourage killers not to camp, with the killers losing emblem points for remaining near hooked survivors. Meaning, killer emblems measure how effective your are at killer WHILE ALSO playing in the devs preferred playstyle. So it does not measure your actual skill as a killer, it measures your adherence to the dev's playstyle curation attempts.

Pipping doesn't matter in the slightest.

Pips matter to me.
Playing solo Survivor, I try my best to help my team and pips let me know where I need to improve. That and recording my matches helps immensely.
The only time I don’t care about pips is when I’m in SWF. My friends don’t take the game seriously and I have so much fun with them, de-ranking doesn’t sting anymore. It’s a time to unwind.
However, going back to solo, it stings a lot when a de-pip. It (almost always) means that I didn’t do my part well. It’s a bit frustrating, especially because I see posts about how solos are underpowered and/or that solos often drive the team into losing, since there is little to no communication.
As a solo Survivor, I gotta do my best to make up for that lack of communication. Being that one random in games is my pride. Getting into higher ranks puts me against better players, both Killers and Survivors, which means more room to improve. Which means, again, that pips matter to me.
It only stress me out a bit, not to a point where I hate playing for pips, it’s to a point where it’s one of the things I love about DBD.
Edit: To answer the original question: No, gaining a pip does not always mean a win.

No. Ranking up gives you nothing.

I would much prefer to depip on both sides, but I do not want to hold back as well.
I'm fine being Rank 1 as survivor, as I have enough knowledge to handle my own (although I would prefer to be with my friends).
As killer on the other hand, it's a toxicity festival. Everyone wants to screw you over, embarrass you, and make sure you have the worst time possible. While it feels good when it backfires on someone, the personal pressure I feel when playing killer is too much to enjoy playing Rank 1 after a certain period of time

Coming to the realization that I dont care about pipping made this game ten times more fun. Prestiging sealed this. So now I just run about doing as I want. When I play survivor ill make myself goals and play a role. Make choices based on my current characters personality. This Cheryl is gonna pay back that Nea who safe saved her. Dwight and Also Nea tho? The ones that both blew engines and ran? Fuckem. But that first Nea? I'll take a protection hit so you can get to the hatch. I depiped, but had fun and helped get a good player to the choppa.
Same as killer. I love booting up clown with no perks, no addons and just stand still swinging like a bot. Afterawhile the survivors grow comfortable with me and start farming. I let them... until the final engine is fixed. They all run back to teabag me, because dont they all? Thats when I gas them, noed triggers and I down all of them. I then force them to crawl on their bellies towards the exit slowly teasing them. Usually they all leave... Usually. :D
Scares the ######### out of em. Also like two of em usually pop up and hit me with a pallet and open the door on their own. Or they cleansed all the totems because why wouldn't you. Still. Spooks the ######### out of em.
I stopped caring about depiping and de ranking and hoarding. This games pretty awesome.

I stopped giving a ######### about pipping after I scored 26k+ as Demo and got an entity displeased.

If I care about anything, it's BP and XP. Unless I'm doing a challenge that requires specific emblem scores, pips can go screw themselves.

Not usually.
...Unless I'm trying to Adept a killer (Adept Twins is a pain).
On the survivor end, if I die but had a fun match along the way, then I'd consider that an entertainment victory.
