Why is father Campbell's chapel in ruin and who cause the piles of fires that surrounds the chapel?

The blight caused a lot of damage when he transformed in the middle

It's because the asylum was set on fire. The disturbed ward and the chapel were basically the only buildings that survived the fire.

Yeah the chapel is a part of the asylum and the entire place burned.
